Today we celebrate Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. We all know the creation story. This Sunday in the First Reading from Genesis we hear a piece of that story where God says that it is not good for the man to be alone. So God creates a suitable partner for him, and so we have Adam and Eve! The creation of Eve shows us a God who loves us and is concerned for us. He didn’t want us to be alone. We are all in this work of the Kingdom together. But then we even get something more astonishing in the Second Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews. In this reading we read that God chose to come and live among us. It wasn’t enough for God to give us companions along the way, he decided he wanted to walk with us as well. This is unbelievable. God can’t love us that much, but he does. He goes even farther when he gives himself up for us. This is the Good News and it is astonishing. Today at Holy Name Cathedral two of our community will be awarded the Christefidelis Award by Cardinal Cupich. This award is given to lay people who work hard as Jesus’ Disciples. Most couples walk down the aisle on their wedding day filled with the promise of love. They are bound together by their dreams of a mutually life-giving relationship. They are united in trusting their future together. Today’s Gospel reading begins with a painful description of what happens when love is wounded beyond healing; when bonds are fragmented beyond repair; and when trust is shattered beyond hope. answer the call. She works tirelessly in the school in before and aftercare. She reads stories to the children and has subbed for teachers when needed. She teaches Religious Education classes and is a Eucharistic Minister on Sundays as well as volunteering for any job needed at parish functions. Rita is a good and faithful servant of the Lord and we salute her. Joan Hair has been a parishioner of St. Kieran from the beginning. She developed the music ministry at St. Kieran and taught music in the school. She has given lessons over the year to many children who still keep in contact with her. Anytime there was a challenge in the music area, Joan would step in and rally the troops. She is a spirit filled leader. She has spearheaded mission collections for Fr. Raphael, and has been a faithful Minister of Care. We are proud of both our candidates this year and say thank you! On Tuesday October 16th there will be a parents meeting for parents whose children will be receiving First Communion in the spring. It is a required meeting for the parents. The meeting will be held at St. Agnes and begins at 6:30 PM in Church. As the school year has geared up you may have noticed more and more children having their bulletins signed at mass. As Catholics we worship God every week. It is part of who we are. We see God present in the Community of Faith and are reminded to go into the week to do his work. The children having bulletins signed are in a special year of their religious education. They are going to receive the Sacraments of Eucharist, Reconciliation, or Confirmation. As a faith community please include these children in your prayers. Please note that on page 9 I have an additional note on finances for this past year (ending June 30). Thank you for taking the time to read it. We are all St. Agnes.

encircle those who are feeling vulnerable and marginalized with the same tender care. Children at play often mirror the behavior they have observed from their parents and other significant adults. Many a parent has been either embarrassed or charmed when they have heard their own words coming out of their child’s mouth; when a child mimics their quirky gesture; or when a child insists on doing something exactly the way a parent does it. How do you think the children emulated Jesus blessing them? What do you think they saw reflected in his presence? What did they learn about themselves through their relationship with Jesus? God created us to be in relationship so we could mirror God’s presence to each other. When love’s mirror has been distorted, those who are hurting especially need someone to reflect God’s love clearly. Jesus wants us to bless each other by being his listening, patient and compassionate presence. Would we be embarrassed or charmed by how children might imitate us? The Pharisees in today’s Gospel tried to trip Jesus up with their laws. Even as Jesus sparred with their legalism, he modeled a different way of being in relationship. He welcomed the bedlam and commotion of children, embraced their humble, seemingly insignificant lives, and lifted them up in blessing. When hearts are broken and dreams are shattered, Jesus calls us to welcome the mess, embrace the pain, and patiently wait for new blessings to emerge. Left with the image of Jesus willingly being tackled by a throng of kids, we can ask ourselves, “How good are we at welcoming, embracing and blessing the messiness of life?”

We are the Ministers of Care of St. Agnes parish, prepared and commis-sioned through an Archdiocesan program to serve you in these situations, be they temporary or long-term. But we cannot re-spond to your need unless you make us aware of it. Hospitals and nursing homes do not notify us about your admission or discharge. Privacy laws restrict them from doing so. So please let us know of your need, or the need of a family member, by calling the parish office.

Blue Envelope

Christefidelis Award

Please remember that your contributions made in the blue envelopes from your monthly packets are used for updates, renovations and upkeep of St. Agnes Church. It is because of these donations, along with special campaigns that we were able to put a much needed roof on our church and now are cleaning up the interior of our worship space. Upkeep and tunings are also needed regularly on our wonderful or-gan. We look forward to new flooring and carpeting as well! Thank you for your generosity. If you do not use this enve-lope, please consider doing so. Every dollar helps and is greatly appreciated. Father John

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT EVERY WEEKEND IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, ALL CHURCHES IN THE

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO TAKE THEIR OCTOBER COUNT SURVEY.

A head count is taken at every Mass and these statistics are sent back to Chicago. It is important that you are at Mass (always!) but during October for this important “count.”

THESE STATISTCS ARE USED AS THE OFFICES OF THE ARCH LOOK TO THE

FUTURE OF ALL OF OUR CATHOLIC CHURCHES.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of our great treasures is the way the Church has frequently flourished under unfavorable conditions, like the grape ivy on the mantel that refuses to die no matter how infrequently you water it or open the drapes. Like the apartheid laws in South Africa in the last century, the penal laws of Ireland were aimed at depriving the majori-ty population of basic human rights. The Protestant par-liament of Ireland enacted laws limiting the practice of Catholicism. The goal was to force conversion from “popery” to the Church of Ireland, and additional laws took aim at Jews, non-Anglicans, and Quakers. There were laws against intermarriage, laws against Catholics being lawyers (there was a one-hundred-pound fine), a law granting lifelong income to priests who be-came Protestant, and a ban on weapons. In fact, until 1793, a Catholic man had to recruit and pay a Protestant man to serve in the local militia in his place! As if family life is not complicated enough in any age, the sons of a deceased father could divide his land equally, unless one became Protestant. In that case all would go to him! When allowed, new Catholic churches had to be built of wood, not stone, be off a main road or city square, have no steeple or bell, and be called a “chapel.” Catholic “Emancipation” was largely secured by 1829, but even up to the founding of the Irish State in the 1920s, some effects of the laws endured. No wonder that poor Irish immigrants to the United States frequently built glorious-ly beautiful churches as their firs“Emancipation” was largely secured by 1829, but even up to the founding of the Irish State in the 1920s, some effects of the laws en-dured. Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, let me sow pardon. Where there is friction, let me sow union. Where there is error, let me sow truth. Where there is doubt, let me sow faith. Where there is despair, let me sow light. Where there is sadness, let me sow joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek, to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is pardoning that we are pardoned, it is dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

HE EMBRACED THEM AND BLESSED THEM Today Jesus stresses how children embody the reign of God. They are trusting and loving and have hearts that are open to love. They are joyful when they are made aware of God’s love for them, and are eager to return that love. This is the model Jesus holds out to us if we want to welcome the reign of God. We need to have open, loving hearts. We must drop our defenses, however we came by them, and welcome Christ’s love for us with joy. This is impossible for us on our own. Only the grace of God will enable us to do this, but that grace is freely and generous-ly given. We have only to accept it. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

This weekend I am reporting on the End of Year Financial Report for the fiscal year 7/1/17-6/30/18. The top half of the report (page 8) reflects the ordinary day to day income and expenses. The bottom portion of the report shows extraordinary income and expenses. This year we ended with a deficit in both the ordinary and extraordinary finances of the parish. This year, both the School and Religious Education program reported a bet-ter financial position than the year before, while the church recorded a deficit. In Religious Education there was a profit of $6,891 and in the School there was a small deficit of $3,832. For the church we had a deficit of $20,918. This leaves a combined operating deficit of $17,859. Two important facts from the church report is the Repairs /Maintenance and the Weekly/Holy Day Col-lections. We can’t do much about repairs and maintenance. We have to fix things when they break and we have to update our buildings for the future. The weekly and Holy Day income is more distressing. Our collections have dropped $55,000 from the year before. The only thing making this report look okay is that we cut our expenses by almost $100,000... I was just at an Archdiocesan Summit and they spoke about this problem...I quote, “Catholics are not less successful than other people, or make less money than other people, we just give less than any other church. We need to up our giving.” The extraordinary deficit is less concerning. Extraordinary income and expense is not budgeted for. The income is banked until it is needed for a project. When we have a necessary project then we use the money and it becomes an expense in the year the project was completed. So the new church roof explains the deficit. The good thing is that we had the money saved up for the project, so we did not go into debt over it, even though it shows as a deficit in this report! The debt with the Archdiocese remained the same except for the addition of interest. In conclusion we are holding our own, but we really have no play-room in our budget. So, finally—I don’t often ask, but today I need your help. Please consider an increase in your weekly offering to help strengthen the parish finances. Thank you.
