“Remember Who You Are”

One of my favorite Disney movies

is the Lion King. Although there is

a lot of symbolism in the original

movie, my favorite scene happens

to be the scene where Simba speaks

to the ancestors. Simba has been displaced from his

family and sitting alone contemplating what he

should do next. Relational conflicts all around him

had led him to run away from all he loved.

While burden to help he contemplates what he

should do next and receives a vision of his deceased

father Mufasa. Mufasa conveys a very simple but

life changing message. He says, “Simba, Remember

who you are”.

Like Simba there are relational conflicts all around

us and often times we don’t know how to respond.

Daily people are dying at the hands of hatred and

violence. When attempting to identify where to stand

in regards to conflict, we too must “Remember who

we are”.

We are Disciples of Christ. As Christ disciples we

follow the all loving, unifying, and reconciling

example in the personhood of Jesus Christ. God is

Love, hate of all kind is opposite of Love and

therefore contrary to God.

1 John 4:7-11 states, Beloved, let us love one

another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has

been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does

not love does not know God, because God is love. In

this the love of God was made manifest among us,

that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we

might live through him. In this is love, not that we

have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son

to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so

loved us, we also ought to love one another.
