cabs better than anyone else does, ensuring steady business for our chauffeurs. Accident insurance,

medical insurance, also allows them to have a safety net to provide security in the event of an

untoward incident. Our concern for our chauffeurs is to ensure that by making them earn a

respectable livelihood, with good economics, we would be able to make their personal lives better.

For those who avail our service, Meru Cabs offers a cab service that emulates the best taxi service

norms across the world. We try our best to ensure availability; our onboard technology ensures that a

customer pays a fair fare with a printed receipt for each transaction. We try to ensure that your need

for commuting is met every time you need to commute and in as hassle free a manner as possible.

Our cabs use environment friendly fuel. This is especially true in cities where CNG is easily available.

    Meru Training Academy

We believe that the critical difference between an ordinary taxi service and a Meru Cabs service lies

in the investment that we make into training our chauffeurs. Our stringent conditions for engaging a

chauffeur include address verification, complete medical check up, testing of driving skills, ability to

manage the on board technology on our vehicles, familiarity with your city and all the mandatory

licensing criteria. And if a potential chauffeur meets these requirements, we put them through an

intensive 5-day training program where we impart knowledge on customer service, hygiene, safe

driving habits and how to handle an emergency.

Meru Cab Company Private Limited operates its fleet of modern, air-conditioned, GPS enabled

vehicles under the brand name, Meru. Meru is rooted in our Indian culture. The Hindu and Jain

mythology refer to Mount Meru as the center of the universe, the abode of Lord Brahma and a

pantheon of gods and goddesses. There are many temples in India and abroad, including the famous

Angkor Vat in Cambodia, that have been built as symbolic representations of Mount Meru. According

to the ancient texts, Meru Mountain was the epicenter of the Earth and when the churning of the

oceans (Sagar Manthan) took place, Mount Meru was able to withstand all the resulting turbulence.

Meru, the brand is today a symbol of our commitment to unshakeable reliability- the heart of our

    promise to our customers.

It is this promise of reliability that drives us at Meru Cabs to endeavour to provide the most efficient

services every time to our customers.

We try to make every trip a perfect experience for our customers. If, for any reason we fall below your

expectation, or you believe that we could do better, please do let us know. Call us at 44224422 or

Meru Cabs to expand operation in overseas market

    next year

    26th dec 2010:

MUMBAI: Having achieved close to 50 per cent market share in India, radio cab service provider Meru

Cabs , now plans to expand its operation in the overseas market next year.

"Meru has good demand in the Indian market. Presently, we have close to about 50 per cent share in

the domestic market. Now onwards, we want to expand our operation in the overseas market next

year," Meru Cabs' Chief Executive Officer Rajesh Puri said.

"We will start operation at least two countries in the Asian market next year," he said. Puri, however,

did not reveal the country name.

The country's largest radio cab service provider plans to ramp-up its operations by adding 2,500 cars

and hiring an equal number of drivers by December 2011 to cater to increased consumer demand.

"Presently, we have 5,000 cars and plan to deploy another 2,500 cabs by December 2011 to cater to

    the consumer demand," Puri said.

Meru plans to invest Rs 200 crore for procuring and deploying 2,500 cabs. "Rs 200 crore investment

will go into procuring and deploying 2,500 cabs," he said.

"Currently we have 5,000 drivers across four cities. We plan to recruit additional 2,500 drivers by

    December 2011," he said.

The company receives around 50,000 requests for cab bookings in a single day across Mumbai, Delhi

, Bangalore and Hyderabad . "We receive around 15 lakh requests for cabs in every month," he said,

adding "during peak hours, the company found itself rejecting nearly 40 per cent requests, prompting

    it to hire additional drivers."

No longer does one have to argue about fare or even be sceptical about safety as the

feature 'panic button' that is installed in every car enables the driver to connect to thecontrol centre in case of an emergency. There is a first aid kit also in all vehicles just incase! People who inadvertently leave behind items can get them back through the 'Lostand Found' tracking system in place. It is easy as the customer has to call and inform thecar number, date and time of travel which would be available on the printed fare receipt.

Mobile Communication TerminalThere is a Mobile Communication Terminal (MCT) in each car which has a built-in GPSreceiver, LCD display screen and GPRS connectivity, helps the driver to communicatewith the control room. Meru's datacenter hosts a set of communication servers, application servers and database servers which are in constant touch with each carthrough GPRS. The latitude and longitude information is plotted on GIS map for real timetracking.

Better business sense and quality serviceThe GPS will monitor where the cab was, at what time, how many fares were picked up,when the cab went off duty, and how much money the driver made. Customers have ahassle-free safe drop. The management is happy so are the customers. Greattechnological combination with many practical applications is a boon to one and all.Technology increases profits, improves safety and delivers better service for customers.Meru cab, which was launched in April 2007, has won the NASSCOM-CNBC IT User

The Success Story of Meru Cabs Case Study For

    Entrepreneurs

There are lot of startups who start their journey with lot of enthusiasm, however over the

period of time they lose the momentum due to competition or lesser consumer acceptance,

    wafer thin margins etc.

However MERU cabs is a one great story from which one can learn a lot of things. As

mentioned in management books one should offer a product/ service which fulfils consumerneed or at least makes him feel that his need is fulfilled.

So what is the problem that MERU has addressed?

    Problem Statement

Whenever one has to travel by private transport, one is at mercy of taxi/auto drivers. One

has to make several attempts to get the taxi/auto to the desired destination. If you are

travelling for a longer distance, god help you.

What MERU has done is,they gave the consumer the sense of reliability that they will get a

cab to any destination within the city. I feel its a BIG positive factor, i.e. of trust.

    Technology

Whenever we talk about MERU cabs, we talk about their technology, GPS, call center for

order booking etc. Yes technology has played a vital role in MERUs success; however there

are many important factors that have helped MERU to be successful.

I feel technology can enable businesses however mere good technology wont lead to a

    successful business.

Lets look at what are the other factors

    The Economical Factor

I was traveling by MERU cab and was chatting to driver named Mishraji. Mishraji told me that

MERU cab is 60% costlier than normal taxis. However the people still prefer MERU, due to itspunctuality, readiness to go to any corner of the city and overall customer service.

    http://www.pluggd.in/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/merulogo.gif
  • 7/30/2019 The Meru Cabs Service is a Licensed Metered Taxi Operation and is Governed by the Fares Prescribed by the Dep

    13/14

Though I feel 60% is too high. According to me MERU is 5 to 10% costlier than normal taxis

So the consumer will pay you premium, provided you make him feel that he is getting value

    for money

    Compensation

Every company feels that they are paying the best to their employees and every employee

feels that he is underpaid. However in case of MERU, the employee pays the company and

both are happy. I will explain briefly the MERU model

MERU hires the driver with certain driving experience and train him on soft skills.

A contract is signed between MERU and the driver. MERU buys the car and gives it to the driver

The fuel cost has to be borne by the driver

The maintenance of the car is taken care by MERU

MERU helps the drivers by providing the booking to drivers through their call centers

The driver is free to take fares if he doesnt get the fare from the call center

In return the driver provides Rs. 800 per day to MERU

Whatever the driver earns above these 800 rupees is his own income.

Now MERU has enabled the employees to earn what they want to earn and they have not

only given them employment but a business

Provide employees the opportunity to earn to their potential. (May be through Performance

Linked Incentives or any other innovative way that fits your business)

    The Employee Trust

While talking to Mishraji, he told me that the company CEO MR. Gupta is a great person and

he is happy to work for a person like him. When I asked him about the competition, he said,

in Mumbai nobody comes close to MERU. As per him Easy Cabs tried to replicate the MERUsbusiness model, however they are not very successful. He told that Easy Cabs have 400

cabs, whereas MERU has close to 1700 cabs. Easy Cabs drivers have to pay 900 rupees to

Easy Cabs and also bear the cost of fuel as well as maintenance of the vehicles. Whereas in

MERU the driver have to pay 800 rupees and the company bears the cost of maintenance.

This shows how much Mishraji believed in his company.

The point which I am trying to drive here is that the employee should believe in the

management & the company for it to succeed, i.e. walk the talk.

    14/14

So if one gets these things right for a business, it can lead to a successful business. Well its

easy to say but its difficult to implement and thats why all the startups are not successful

    the way MERU is.

    Whats your opinion?
