Remarkable season ends in a 5th game GSL volleyball finishes 25-4 By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor A “remarkable” 2012 GSL vol- leyball “team” saw its season end in a decisive fifth game of its North Subsection 2 (Class AA) semifinal last Tuesday, Oct. 30, in New Prague. Battling fellow Wright County Conference member Mound-We- stonka, a team GSL outlasted in five games back on Sept. 11, the Panthers lost the go-the-distance rematch; the Hawks winning 25- 13, 25-27, 21-25, 25-20, 15-11. “Mound is a truly united team,” GSL head coach “Murf” Schwirtz said. “They play as one and un- derstand each other’s role.” Schwirtz easily could have been talking about her own team, which blended together to win 25 out of 29 matches this fall. Ask Schwirtz what will first come to her mind 10 years from now when mention of the 2012 Panthers is made, she said she will picture a “remarkable team” — indeed, a tight group consist- ing of three senior captains, two juniors, a sophomore and three ninth-graders. Each senior had a strong ca- reer-closing match. Clarissa Ober, a 6-1 middle-hit- ter, was charted for 34 kills (47.89 attack percentage) and 8 solo blocks. Schwirtz calls her a gifted athlete who uses her talents to the best of her ability. “A tenacious threat at the net, ... ‘The Beast’ is fun to watch per- form,” Schwirtz said, “and (she) does what you ask of her with a 100-percent work (ethic).” Courtney Lemke, the setter, came through with 52 set assists in her final match. Schwirtz says she is a gym rat with cat-like re- flexes. “It is easy to coach someone with the level of passion she has for the game,” Schwirtz said. “... (She) leads by example, and never gives up.” Krissy Garbers, an undersized outside hitter, contributed 9 kills, 9 of 10 serves, 25 digs and 11 service receives to her final match. Schwirtz calls her an intense spit- fire; a player who does not care if she has to face a 6-foot opponent. “She’s a gamer at heart, and fears no one,” Schwirtz said. Among the girls expected to re- turn next fall is versatile 5-11 mid- dle-hitter Steph Klockmann, who closed her junior season with a big performance at New Prague. “Klockmann had an all-around amazing match,” Schwirtz said. “She not only was tough at net blocking back-row attacks, but she had some key (13) digs and chalked up 10 kills.” Klockmann also was GSL’s serve leader, launching 19 attempts with- out an error. Burr earns all-state spotGSL junior places 17th at Class A meet

Tori Burr made herthird trip to the ClassA state cross country

meet her best yet.The Glencoe-Silver Lake

junior, running with 174 otherelite runners on a cloudy, calmSaturday morning in the 40s atSt. Olaf College in Northfield, ran the 4,000-meter course in15 minutes, 16.33 seconds. That placed 17th overall, mak-ing Burr a member of her divi-sion’s 25-girl all-state team.

“She didn’t seem nervous at

all,” GSL head coach Jeff Del-wiche said, noting how calmBurr ran after establishing goodposition with a “great start.”

Burr, who ran the statecourse first as an eighth-grader,returned last year, when sheplaced 32nd in15:38.3.

How did she manage to lopoff 22 seconds in a year?

For one thing, Delwiche de-scribed the state course as“rock hard” and “very fast.”Second, weather conditionswere ideal for distance runners.Third, Burr had those two pre-vious state experiences.

“Tori was totally prepared;totally ready,” he said.

Jalen Metcalf, a second GSLstate qualifier, placed 89th (outof 175) in the boys’ race.

A senior running in his firststate meet, Metcalf posted atime of 17:20.1 for his divi-sion’s 5,000-meter test.

GSL’s steady lead runnerthroughout the season, Metcalf“seemed happy” with his stateexperience, according to Del-wiche.

GSL fullback Dalton Clouse (46) powers for some ofthe 140 rushing yards he gained against Hutchinson

in the Section 2 (Class AAAA) championship game.

scored again, making it a one-possession game.

But McKinley Andersonand Petersen hooked up on a78-yard pass, which led to aHutch touchdown.

The Tigers, in the end, won35-13.

In last Friday’s rematch,GSL marched 69 yards withthe opening possession of thesecond half, scoring on the12th play to narrow its deficitto 21-7.

Then, GSL’s defensechalked up a 3-and-out stop,resulting in a Hutch punt.From its 45, GSL’s offensetook possession looking formore.

Instead, the Panthers got aprocedure penalty; then a 3-yard run on first down, a passincompletion on seconddown, and a pass interceptionon third down — the pick anover-the-shoulder grab after adeep drop by linebacker JakeWendland.

With the ball, Hutch

marched 59 yards in ninestraight rushing plays to re-es-tablish superiority.

Final score: Hutchinson 28,GSL 7.

***These 13 Panther seniors

have played the final game intheir high school careers:Reed Dunbar, Travis Roth-stein, Derek Bratsch, RyanKuester, Ethan Maass, Bran-don Ebert, Zach Dahlke,Austin Jackson, Mitch Rose,Eric Thalmann, JeremyTower, Michael Skoglund, and Ray Eberhard.

Twelve of the 13 werestarters. Three — Dunbar,Maass and Ebert — werethree-year starters.

“I’m really happy for ourseniors,” Tschimperle said, noting the WCC West Divi-sion championship won by the2012 Panthers, plus an unde-feated record (5-0) at home.

He also mentioned thecome-from-behind victoryover Annandale and an ability

Tschimperle gave a lot ofcredit to Hutchinson, notinghow well the Tigers got theirGSL opponents blocked.

“I expect them to win itall,” Tschimperle said.

***The first time Hutch and

GSL met, back on Sept. 7, theTigers scored the first threetimes they owned the ball. While both the first and thirdpossessions were grindingmarches, the middle one re-quired a big play. McKinleyAnderson produced that, completing a 22-yard pass outof punt formation. At half-time, the score was: Hutchin-son 21, GSL 0.

In last Friday’s rematch,Hutch marched 71 yards withthe opening possession, scor-ing after 11 consecutive rush-ing plays.

GSL answered with a 67-yard march of its own; thePanthers advancing to a spotinside the Hutch 2 in sevenstraight rushing plays. Butthen, the Tigers produced twobig plays in three snaps.

First, GSL fumbled into theend zone on 1st-and-goal, andthe Tigers’ Evan Metag re-covered for a touchback. Then on second down, Ander-son hit speedster Mitch Pe-tersen in stride for an 81-yardTD pass.

About six minutes later,Anderson broke loose for a73-yard TD run.

By halftime, the score was:Hutchinson 21, GSL 0.

On the long pass, Tschim-perle said GSL super safetyEthan Maass (17 tackles) biton a run-action fake, leaving“lightning-fast” Petersen onlyto deal with man coverage.

Running a basic post route,Petersen stretched easily tocollect a perfectly thrown ballfrom his QB.

With each long-distanceTD, Hutch showed GSL’s de-fense nothing new.

“We just didn’t execute,”Tschimperle said.

The first time the teamsmet, back on Sept. 7, GSL gotthe scoring started in the sec-ond half. Then the Panthers

to step up when things gottough.

“They just never gave up,”Tschimperle said.
