Visual Arts Manga – Drawing of Anime Cartoons Learn the techniques of Manga, also known as Anime, drawing characters like the ones seen in Naruto, Bleach, or One Piece. Students will learn the techniques, history and qualities of Manga as compared to other art forms. Taught by an amazing young artist, students will venture into their imagination and create their own characters. Bring a sketch pad, regular pencils and colored pencils. In this class you will learn all about landscape painting including how to paint skies, clouds, water, trees, sandbars, marshes and other environmental aspects using representational realism. A noted artist and teacher, Provie will inspire you to create your own two or three-dimensional artworks. Textile

Exploring Printmaking A variety of printing techniques will be introduced including mono-printing, hand-cut block printing, screen-printing, and creative use of stenciling. Students will learn pattern organization and how to print variations of one idea. Textiles and paper will be used in the course. Some supplies will be included and after introduction, students will be required to purchase some of their own materials. Sewing Studio Class will teach students basic sewing methods, techniques and use of sewing machine. Students can choose individual projects and be guided from start to finish. Wire Wrapping Jewelry In this introduction to wire wrapping, you will learn the basic techniques to turn and twist metal to create beautiful pieces of jewelry. These two hour classes will introduce students to techniques needed to create all types of jewelry with wire, stones and beads. Students will make one of a kind pendants, rings, necklaces and earrings. Tools are provided. Bring your own supplies or purchase supplies from teacher on the night of class. Make it and Take it - Jewelry Making with Beads Learn the art of stringing beads to create beautiful, one-of-a kind pieces. Students will learn various techniques to create necklaces, earrings, bracelets, eye-glass holders, key chains and more. A large assortment of beads and supplies are available, as well as tools needed to make one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces. Materials include high quality glass, crystals, wood and metal beads, natural semi-precious stones, cultured pearls, and sterling silver findings. Stained Glass for Quilters This class is designed to introduce quilters to the art of stained glass. Participants will learn how to cut glass and assemble a quilt inspired stained glass panel using the copper foil method. Students should bring an envelope, pen, scotch tape, sharpie marker, and gallon size Ziploc bag to the first class. Beginning Pottery Learn the basics of wheel throwing in this small class with local artist, Mark King. He will teach you about centering, raising the vessel and all other skills needed to create a completely functional piece of pottery of your own. Class fee includes supplies, firing and one-on-one instruction during class. Each class is limited to 5 students in order to allow for maximum individual time with the instructor. In this hands-on class designed for the beginning digital SLR camera user, learn

Photography: Beyond the basics with your DSLR

Students must have either prior knowledge of shutter speeds and aperture usage or

have taken my beginning digital SLR photo class. Students will leave this class with

a better understanding of shutter speeds and aperture to get the best exposure for

heir digital pictures. Principles of design and composition will be discussed so students

can improve their images compositionally. This class is for DSLR cameras.

the basics for you. Learn how your camera works including menu functions, how to

connect to your PC and some basics in taking digital pictures using flash and general

Performing Arts

Voice for Life Program VOICE for LIFE is the Royal School of Church Music’s acclaimed guide to training choirs and singers of all ages and levels. This program provides a framework for choral singers to develop their vocal skills, musical understanding, and knowledge of the repertoire. Once the program is completed, the student will be a certified RSCM chorister. Learn songs as a group, but students will complete the books and classwork at their own pace. Beginner Bellydance This class is designed for beginners who have little to no bellydance experience or for dancers who need a refresher course. Class will focus on posture, several basic combinations and also includes a short choreography. You will be dancing in just 6 short weeks. Knife Skills 101 Chop, Chop, Chop! That will be the sound emanating from this class. Students will learn the basics of KNIVES in the kitchen. We will learn the safest ways to use high-quality, chef knives to cut, chop and debone. You will learn methods used by chefs to fabricate onions and cut vegetables into julienne, batonnet, small dice, medium dice and chiffonade cuts. All of this chopping should make you hungry as kitchen elves make our dinner with our sliced and diced ingredients for us to enjoy after we are finished…”cutting-up”. Coffee First We are hooked on coffee. It is the first thing we want in the morning. Join Rich Serpe, a Master Coffee Roaster and his wife Rene in the cafe for a class on coffee and tea. We will travel through time looking at the history and the characteristics of this sippable plant extract. Join us for the class on the beverage that changed travel and commerce worldwide. Coffee is a third world product that has always been coveted by royalty. The Basics of Asian Cooking We will take a culinary trip and sample some recipes and learn techniques from different parts of Asia. Too Many Crabs This time of the year, we have crabs coming out of our ears! What is a person to do with all this bounty from the gulf? Well, make Crab Bisque of course. They will learn how to set up mis en place and learn and practice some easy clean-as-they-go techniques. Each day they will prepare and serve their own lunch. Build your own 14’ “Skin-on-Frame” Kayak in Two Days You will learn the basics of utilizing lightweight durable “skin-on-frame” construction techniques to build your own kayak. Mark Daynes, master craftsman, has created custom kayak kits of spruce and white rip-stop nylon. The “Jawbone” style kayak design has been adapted to take advantage of our local coast waters. This stable kayak features an open cockpit design and is light weight (final weight ranging for this 14’ beauty of 30-40 lbs). As newly anointed boat builders, you are invited to showcase your creations and launch them at Fort Maurepas Park in Ocean Springs, MS during the Southcoast Summerfest on Saturday, June 23. Participants will us staple guns, hand saws, small hammer, block plane, Phillips screwdriver and 2” china bristle paint brushes. (You can bring your own tools or use those furnished by instructor)

All registrations are considered confirmed upon completion. You will not receive further confirmation. Therefore, it is your responsibility to record all personal registration information to ensure attendance on the correct date and time. If a class for which you have registered is full, postponed or cancelled, you will be notified. WAITING LIST Once the instructor’s maximum enrollment is reached, names will be placed on a waiting list and students will be notified if an opening occurs. You cannot add to the wait list while registering online. CANCELLATIONS We urge early registration for all workshops and classes. Our instructors need adequate time for preparation and purchase of materials. Minimum enrollment must be met at least one week prior to the first day of class or there is a possibility of cancellation. When enrollment is low, instructors reserve the right to cancel the class. We will make every effort to contact families when classes are cancelled. REFUNDS If you are unable to attend a class, we will issue a full refund if you notify us a minimum of two weeks before the first class. If notifica-tion of withdrawal is given after this time but at least three busi-ness days before class begins, you will be responsible for the materials fee, if any, and will receive a credit to be applied to future classes for 90% of the remaining amount. Within three busi-ness days of the first class, registrations are considered final and no refunds will be given, unless you are transferring to another class given by the same instructor. Exceptions to this policy may be granted only if there is a waiting list for the class dropped and we are able to fill your space, or in cases of docu-mented family or medical emergency. Fees cannot be prorated due to planned absences, minor ill-nesses or vacation schedules. No refunds are given due to failure to attend class. If enrollment is insufficient and the instructor cancels a class, you may choose to have your fee refunded in full, transferred to another class, or posted to your household credit account.

LATE FEES

The Mary C. School of Arts fees are due on the first day of class, and students may not participate in class unless fees have been paid unless otherwise arranged with the teacher and MCSA. Teachers cannot be paid if fees are outstanding, so please be courteous to your teacher and to MCSA staff by paying for classes at the start of each session. Beginning with the Winter 2011 session, a $5 late fee will be charged for each class when payment is received more than 2 weeks after the class begins.

PARTICIPATION POLICIES The Mary C. O’Keefe School of Arts is not responsible for unat-tended children on the premises. We do not assume responsibility if your child is dropped off early or picked up late. Please come into the building to see that your child gets to class. MCSA is responsi-ble only for registered students. Parents are responsible for chil-dren brought onto the premises who are not registered in our classes.
