Building Study Committee Update! The preliminary drawing for the kitchen and elevator has been completed and is located on the bulletin board outside the kitchen. As we have already had requests for changes, we are still open for suggestions for improvement. The kitchen design company we are using is Food Service Consultants, and our architect is J.T. Cox and Associates. If you have any questions, please ask one of our building study committee members.

I would like to thank you for all of the gifts received for the kitchen renovation and elevator.

OUTREACHINGS

Looking back over 2013, we find that Centenary did make a difference in helping those that are in need.

Over 10,000 meals were served to our Friday walk-in guests in addition to foot washing providing

relief to tired feet.

Working with Social Services to provide emergency assistance for rent, electricity and

prescriptions.

30,000 meals packed in two Operation Sharehouse events answering needs in Haiti.

Two golf tournaments involving both golfers and sponsors that allowed us to hold the Stop Hunger

Now Events.

Participation in the Kaboom event at UMFS which provided a beautiful playground for the

residents and students.

Sponsoring a child from UMFS to attend a week at Westview on the James.

Providing a temporary home for 35 women during our CARITAS week- three meals and a warm ,

safe place to sleep.

Providing space for twice-weekly AA meetings.

Helping to sponsor two fulltime missionaries- Clara Biswas in Cambodia and Pat Watkins- VA

Conference Caretakers of God’s Creation.

Provided financial assistance to Julie Landsdown volunteering in the Middle East.

The many answered calls from UMCOR for disaster relief and UM Special Sundays supporting

Human Relations Day, One Great Hour of Sharing, Native American Ministries, Peace With Justice, World Communion UM Student Day and UMFS.

Thanks to all of you participating in the events either with your presence and/or prayers. Planning ahead, in addition to the ongoing Friday Walk-in Program and foot washing, we have already scheduled a CARITAS week for April 5-12, a golf tournament on May 1, a volunteer fair with the Downtown Ministry for May 4, and an Operation Sharehouse event for May 17.

Each Sunday afternoon will end around 2 pm. The dates of this study will be March 9, 16, 23, 30 and April 6. Please mark your calendars and plan to be a part of this study – we hope to have as many people as possible involved. Christmas Card Writing Project – 2013

Many thanks to all who contributed Christmas cards for the walk-in project this year and to those who helped in any way. We especially appreciate the dedication of Sarah Hunter, Katrina Fontenla and Neil Shingleton who interacted with the walk-ins on one or more Fridays and assisted with those who needed help and of Bernice Walter who stamped and mailed approximately 100 cards. We also appreciate the non-members who gave of their time. On December 13, John Torrence and two other Gideons came to give out Bibles and interact with interested guests, and Judy Stoneman recognized the veterans in the group and explained to them how to get Humana Health Care and other services available to them. The walk-ins filled out 57 cards which were delivered to the VA hospital for distribution to veterans who needed some Christmas cheer. It’s nice that they can do for others, too. The following incidents indicate how much our church’s ministry to the walk-ins means to them. One client said, “This is the prettiest Christmas tree I have ever seen.” Another stood in a chair to move an ornament to the top of the tree which, she felt, needed a topper. One lady thanked us for mailing the card to her sister who called with her phone number so they can now stay in touch. A well-dressed gentleman who is staying at The Healing Place for the treatment of drug addiction expressed appreciation for our church’s help and said he has faith that he’ll be healed. Many said they were thankful for what our church does for them. If you have any left over cards from this Christmas, we'll be happy to accept these for use in December 2014. Thanks,

Nancy Hill

Chocolate Éclair Dessert In a small saucepan over medium heat, mix together and boil for one minute: 1/3 c. cocoa (Hershey’s) 1 c. sugar 1/4 c. milk (2%) 1/8 tsp. salt Then add: 3/4 – 1 stick butter (“sweet cream” …NOT “unsalted”) 1 tsp. vanilla Mix well, remove from heat and let sit while you make the rest! Mix together in a large mixing bowl: 4 c. cold milk (2%) 2 pkgs. Instant French Vanilla Pudding Then add: 8-oz. container of Cool Whip – French Vanilla flavor if you can find it!...(it’s a “seasonal” flavor) and enhances the flavor Prepare a 9” x 13” glass or metal pan: Rub 1 thin slice of butter around the pan with your fingers (you don’t want to spray w/Pam, but the butter helps keep the dessert from sticking)… Line the bottom of the pan with 1 layer of Graham Crackers (Chocolate graham crackers are my favorite, since they enhance the flavor, but regular plain Graham Crackers can be used)… Spread 1/2 of the pudding mixture on top of the Graham Crackers… Add a 2

nd layer of Graham Crackers and spread the remaining pudding mixture on top.

Cover this layer of pudding mixture with a 3rd

layer of Graham Crackers…almost a whole box will be used. With a thin spatula or the back of a spoon, spread the warm chocolate mixture all over the top of the Graham Crackers - to the edges…spread carefully so as not to disturb the layer of Graham Crackers. DO NOT Cover…put the pan in the refrigerator overnight, and it then can be covered if necessary – when the chocolate is “hard!” It is best to make this a day ahead of serving since that allows time for the Graham Crackers to soften. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve. I have been making this since 1999, and it has always been a hit!! Enjoy!!
