The Year in Review

2016isthefourthyearofimplementationforthethreeprojectsfundedbyTheManyFacesofGenerositycampaign.Culminatingatthe2012FallMeetinginWashington,DC,thecampaignraisedoverfourmilliondollarstosupportthreecoreprojectsidentifiedbyAAFPRSleadershipandmembersascriticaltotheongoingsuccessofthespecialtyoffacialplasticsurgery.

Ø ExcellenceinEducationØ ExpansionoftheFoundation’sResearchprogramsØ SupportfortheFACETOFACEHumanitarianefforts

Duringthe2014FallBoardofDirectorsmeeting,recognizingthevalueofonlinelearning,theBoardapprovedanewstandingcommitteeundertheFoundation,theLEARNEnhancementCommittee.Theprimarychargeofthisgroup,chairedbyThedaC.Kontis,MD,istodevelopanoverallstrategyforenhancingallaspectsoftheLEARNeducationalportalandassureconsistencyandcontinuitywithallotherAAFPRScommittees,particularlytheMembership/ResidencyRelationsCommittee,MultimediaCommittee,CMECommitteeandFellowshipCommittee.Conveningapproximatelyeveryeightweeksduring2016,committeemembersfocusedonmakingtheplatformmoreuserfriendlyanddevelopingthesiteformembers,residentsandfellows.TheResearchCenterCommitteecontinuedtoemphasizetheneedforresearchinthespecialtyoffacialplasticandreconstructivesurgery.$67,500ingrantsandscholarshipswasdistributedin2016fromtheResearchCenter.ThethirdResearchForumwasalsoheldduringthe2016AnnualMeetinginNashville.In2016,wecontinuedtoenhancethedatabaseconstructedin2014fortheFACETOFACEPrograms.ThisdatabaseprovidesthefunctionalitytostoreandtrackinformationaboutthethreeFACETOFACEprogramsandprovidestheabilityforindividualstoindicateandsubmitinformationindicatinginterestinoneormoreoftheprograms.Sinceitsimplementationphysicianshaveofferedideastostreamlinetheplatformformoreeffectiveanalysisofthedata.In2016,AAFPRSmembersreceivedover$45,000instipendstooffsetexpensesforAAFPRSsanctionedInternationalMissionsand$30,000hasalreadybeenapprovedforsixsanctionedtripsin2017.FormoreinformationonanyofthethreeprojectssupportedbytheManyFacesofGenerositycampaign,pleasecontactSeniorProjectConsultant,KarenSloat,ksloat@aafprs.org.

In2014theEducationalandResearchFoundationoftheAAFPRSrolledouttwonewgrantsandascholarshiptosupportprojectsandacademictrainingintheprinciplesofclinicalresearchdesign,researchmanagementandstatisticalanalysis.FundedbytheManyFacesofGenerositycampaign,inthefirstthreeyearsoftheprogramalmost$200,000hasbeenawardedtoAAFPRSmembers.

DuringtheAAFPRS2016AnnualMeetingthethirdannualResearchForumsessionsawthirty-fiveAAFPRSmembersgathertodiscussvariousresearchtopics.Sincethefirst

meetingin2014inOrlando,FL,theResearchForumhasexpandedtobecomeanetworkingopportunityforAAFPRSmembersinterestedinresearch.Participantstooktheopportunitytodiscusscurrentresearchprojectsandtheimpactonfacialplasticandreconstructivesurgery.Theattendeesalsodiscussedwaystoworktogetherontheirprojectstocreatelargerresearchcollaborations.

In2016theResearchCenterandtheResearchCommitteemergedtobecomeonecommitteeoverseeingboththeBernsteinGrantsandtheResearchCenterGrantsandScholarship.ConsiderationisbeinggiventoaformalEBM/ResearchForumtofurtherpromoteconceptsinfacialplasticsurgeryresearch.TherearetwograntsandonescholarshipavailablethroughtheFoundation’sResearchCenter.AsChairoftheResearchCommittee,Iampleasedtosaythatin2016wehadsix(6)applicantsforthethreeResearchCenterprograms,withthreeClinicalInvestigationAwards,oneResearchScholarAward(renewalofsecondyear)andtwoClinicalResearchScholarshipstotaling$67,500infinancialsupport.Ifyouareinterestedinfindingoutmoreaboutavailablegrantsandscholarships,gotohttp://www.aafprs.org/research/.Supportingthespectrumofcurrentandfutureinvestigatorsthroughthevariousscholarshipandgrantmechanismspromotesthescientificdiscoveryresearchandoutcomestoultimatelyoptimizeourpatientcare.Ourgrantmechanismsincludeproductsfortrainees,early,andseniorinvestigators,includinglargeandsmallprojectgrants.Ourscholarshipencouragesstructuredtraininginclinicalinvestigationforourfutureoutcomesresearchleaders.Withthisrobustcombinationweofferourmembersamultitudeofopportunitiestoleadusintothenexteraofoutstandingpatientcareinfacialplasticandreconstructivesurgery.

2016hasbeenanotherexcitingyearforFACETOFACE.Wehaveaddedseveraltripstothefoldofinternationalmissions,withatotaloftentripsin2016tocountriessuchasAfrica,Cambodia,Ecuador,Guatemala,India,PeruandVietnam.Sixtripsarealreadyapprovedfor2017toIndia,Cambodia,GuatemalaandPeru.OneoftheobjectivesoftheManyFacesofGenerositycampaignwastoencouragemorephysicianstobecomeinvolvedintheFACETOFACEprogramsbyprovidingfinancialandadministrativesupport.For2014–2016twenty-oneInternationaltripshavereceivedfundingofover$70,000with$30,000alreadyapprovedfor2017.SincetheimplementationoftheFACETOFACEdatabasein2014,wehavefinallybeenabletodocumenttheworkperformedonthesemissions.Todate,almost1,400patientshavebeenaddedtothedatabaseandbenefitedfromtheexpertiseofAAFPRSphysiciansandsupportstaff.Approximately70%ofthesecasesarecleftlip/palaterelated,withtherestofthesecasesbeingrhinoplasty,microtiarepair,andvariousotherreconstructiveprocedures.WithoutFACETOFACE,thesehundredsofpatientswouldstillbeawaitingcare.TheDomesticViolenceProjectisinthemidstofbeingreenergized.TheproceduresbetweentheFoundationandtheNationalCoalitionAgainstDomesticViolence(NCADV)havebeenreviewedandbothorganizationslookforwardtoaproductiveyearsupportingsurvivorsofdomesticviolence.TheFACESOFHONORprogramwillberevisitedin2017.Wehavestreamlinedtheonlineapplicationsforourmemberdoctorstovolunteerforthesethreeprograms.Byloggingintothefoundationwebsite,doctorsareabletoexpresstheirinterestandcommunicatetheirskillset.Teamleadersforinternationaltripscanscanthedatabaseofdoctorstofindvolunteerswithappropriateskillsets.Aswelookforwardto2017,wewillbereachingouttomembersoftheAcademytogrowthenumberofphysiciansinvolvedinthesethreeprograms!Pleasewatchfore-mailsthatwillaffordyoutheopportunitytosignupandgetinvolvedinFACETOFACE.IfyouwanttoLEARNmoreaboutanyoftheFACETOFACEprogramsandhowyoucanbecomeinvolved,pleasevisittheFoundationwebsiteathttp://www.aafprs.org/history/face-to-face/,orcontactKarenSloatksloat@AAFPRS.org;703-299-7291Ext.230.
