When it comes to shopping, Manchester is the city that never

sleeps. Packed with innovators and style-setters, the UK’s biggest regional shopping

destination is a place where there’s always a next big

thing to be found.

You only have to look to the worlds of fashion and music to get a taste of the city’s trailblazing style. And just as Manchester has always prided itself on producing some of the coolest names in couture (Dame Vivienne Westwood, Matthew Williamson, Henry Holland), or the biggest names in music, so it can always be relied upon for the hottest new retail ideas.

Born out of the pioneering spirit of the Industrial Revolution, Manchester has always had a reputation for being one step ahead of the retail game. A place where those Victorian founding fathers were always on the lookout for the latest and most exciting shopping delights.

Page 6: The Manchester Style Guide

heaven in the recently refurbished Manchester Arndale, packed with over 240 of the UK’s hottest chain stores and flagship shops.

Round the corner, the Northern Quarter has perhaps seen one of the most dramatic transformations of recent times, emerging from post-industrialist gloom into a vibrant maze of independent boutiques and quirky cafes. With every visit seeming to reveal a new retail treasure opening its doors for the first time.

However the latest – and most hotly anticipated – area to get a sprinkle of regeneration gold dust is The Avenue in the slick district at Spinningfields, off Deansgate.

However, while the city is steeped in an impressive shopping heritage, the past decade has also seen it transformed almost beyond recognition. From the large scale rebuilding of whole areas of the city centre, to the arrival of cult brands and top class boutiques, the pace of change has been breathtaking. And it’s not about to stop any time soon, with plenty more new arrivals anticipated over the next few years.

The glittering showpiece of Manchester’s regeneration has to be the uber-chic Exchange Square development – transformed in recent years into one of the city’s most stylish quarters. Where you can nip from sipping champagne in Selfridges’ Moet et Chandon bar, to a personal shop with the stylists-to-the-stars at Harvey Nichols within seconds. Followed by a taste of high street

06

Page 7: The Manchester Style Guide

This district has been completely transformed into a shining new complex of shimmering glass and steel, leading up from the hustle and bustle of its cool riverside cafes, through to a sleek row of exclusive designer stores. With a flagship Armani store and new concept Flannels emporium packed with Prada, Gucci and Tom Ford, promising to make it the city’s most desirable new designer destination.

Not to mention one of the coolest new post-work hangouts thanks to the arrival of super-stylish cocktail bar, The Alchemist. Plus it’s buzzing

selection of bars and restaurants and its alfresco cinematic experience throughout the summer which then transforms into a winter wonderland with its Christmas ice rink.

Yet, even the oldest and most renowned of Manchester’s shopping streets never stands still. Long a haunt of the rich and famous, King St is the grand old dame of the city’s shopping destinations and hosts some of the most beautiful and historic architecture in the city. However, even here there are plenty of exciting new arrivals on the way. Already the landmark new Hervia Bazaar boutique has opened just around the corner from Vivienne Westwood, while the eco-chic Kuyichi store chose King St as its UK launch pad. But, the best – as always in Manchester – is yet to come.

THE LUxUrY LIST Only the best will do for Manchester’s super-spending label lovers – so follow in their footsteps straight to Exchange Square. Between them, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges have got all the big designer names covered. Carry on to House of Fraser Kendals for the perfect personal shopping experience. Stroll over to King St for Vivienne Westwood, Agent Provocateur and Belstaff stand-alone stores. Or sample the latest in Manchester’s designer style over at The Avenue at Spinningfields, favourite new haunt of the fashion set thanks to its amazing Armani store.

Caroline RushCEO, British Fashion Council

“When I think of Manchester fashion, I think of the creative designers born in and around the city such as Matthew Williamson, Dame Vivienne Westwood, Betty Jackson and Henry Holland, the rich retail heritage and brilliant fashion

colleges. It’s no wonder the city is known for its sense of style.

I have fond memories of early shopping trips; coveting Alaia dresses in the Royal Exchange, shopping for art school uniform in Afflecks, and advising my Mum on the pros and cons of one trouser-suit or another at much-loved department store House of Fraser Kendals - where we still meet now for a spot of retail therapy and cup of tea.

Manchester has so many retail gems all in walking distance from each other. I love the Hervia Bazaar boutique

on Spring Gardens and check out Jaeger’s Boutique Collection, where you’ll find some brilliant pieces.”

“It’s OK to be diverse, mix and match and be experimental in Manchester. There are great places to get vintage, designer and high street fashion. I remember when I started working in Kendals, I used to go to Vivienne Westwood in my lunch hour and admire the clothes. I saved up for a tie, which looked great with my white Clinique coat! Having both Selfridges and Harvey Nichols here speaks volumes and

there’s a large variety of brands to suit all price ranges. Outside of London, no other city offers such choice.”

ON GLOrIOUS FOUNdA- TIONS

Ever since Manchester’s well-to-do made their fortunes with the birth of Cottonopolis, they have been finding ever more luxurious ways to spend them.

Even today, strolling down the grand sweep of Deansgate, or browsing the designer boutiques of King St, it’s easy to imagine the Victorian style set parading around their newly-built shopping palaces, splashing out on the latest deliveries from around the world.

Glance up from today’s tempting window displays and you will find some of the most beautiful shop architecture in the country. Then, as now, the city was designed to be one of the premier shopping destinations in the world, with luxuries lurking round every corner.

16

Page 17: The Manchester Style Guide

17ON GLOrIOUS FOUNdA- TIONS

Page 18: The Manchester Style Guide

And nowhere sums up that spirit of shopping adventure more than the iconic façade of Kendal Milne & Co – today home to House of Fraser Kendals – on Deansgate. Celebrating its 175th anniversary, it lays claim to being the founder of the modern department store. Founded as Kendal Milne and Faulkner in 1835, the revolutionary retail institution captivated customers with its concept of stocking such amazing variety under one roof. Gaining a reputation as the city’s most stylish shopping emporium still enjoyed today.

Even now that spirit of innovation lives on as the store celebrates its anniversary and looks to see in the next 175 years in style. Now you can toast the success of your shopping mission with its dazzlingly decadent Tom’s Champagne Bar – named after one of its founding fathers. Or indulge at the ground floor San Carlo Cicchetti restaurant, designed to be one of the city’s favourite foodie haunts.

Wandering further down Deansgate you will discover one of Manchester’s most beautiful hidden shopping gems – the Barton Arcade. This listed Victorian glass and cast iron mall is one of the few remaining examples of its kind in the country, miraculously managing to remain intact through the Second World War and the IRA bombing of 1996.

19

18

Page 19: The Manchester Style Guide

When it opened in 1874, its delicate balconies would have been filled with the region’s most glamorous ladies and gentlemen. Today, the mall is still host to some of the city’s most interesting boutiques after a recent spell of refurbishment, restoring the façade to its former glory and introducing some special one-off stores, including Manchester-based indie clothing emporium The General Store and handmade corset stylist CoCu. Alongside one of the oldest stores in the city, Edwards of Manchester, which has been trading at the same site for over a century and still attracts some of Manchester’s biggest spenders.

20 Across St Ann’s Square, it’s well

worth a visit to the stunning sandstone palace of Manchester’s grand old Royal Exchange building (the largest trading room in England in its financial heyday). Culture vultures will be drawn to one of the cutting-edge productions in the world-famous theatre. But make sure you leave time to admire the beautiful architecture of its adjoining shopping arcade as you browse the glittering variety of jewellery and gift boutiques. Home to all kinds of unusual retail treasures, including Jenny Jones jewellery store, perfect for stocking up on presents, or a delightful old tobacconist’s shop.

From there you’re just a hop, skip and a jump from King St, one of the grandest shopping areas in the city, where the old cotton palaces, banks and financial institutions have been transformed into a designer shopping street. Start your sightseeing at the gorgeous

Vivienne Westwood boutique, working your way past the likes of Belstaff and DKNY for a top-class spending spree.

Of course, no tour of Manchester’s retail heritage is complete without a trip to see the remarkable old Corn Exchange building. Once buzzing with the bustle of traders exchanging wares, today it hosts a variety of boutiques as The Triangle Shopping Centre. The funky fountains outside are the perfect place to pause and take in some of Manchester’s most stunning shopping scenery.

“I love Manchester’s Selfridges, and the Northern Quarter for the independent labels and vintage dress shops.

Chic bars and cafés, second-hand book and record shops, craft markets and art galleries can all be discovered here, but it is the numerous vintage fashion shops and independently owned labels that really make the Northern Quarter the coolest and most unique

sector of the city, not to mention the place most worth a good rummage.

You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn’t heard of, let alone visited, Afflecks. Open since the 1980s, it is at the heart of this quirky corner of the city. Its four floors are packed

with independent fashion, accessory, record and vintage stalls, catering for all aspects of alt-youth. From piercings to posters, tattoos to t-shirts, it is the perfect destination for anyone wanting an unusual gift. Suffice to say, it has also launched the careers of local entrepreneurs

Standing at the heart of Manchester’s independent sector is the distinctive Northern Quarter, clustered lovingly along and around Oldham St. It’s a sprawling treasure trove of all things fiercely independent, vintage, retro, handmade and creative.

and labels, including Wayne and Geraldine Hemingway of Red or Dead. Alongside, every Saturday, the Tib St Fashion Market is a vital platform for all local designers and labels.

As a shopping destination, Manchester is rapidly becoming a hotspot for those seeking vintage styles and unique clothing. The Northern Quarter is teeming with such offerings - from designer vintage, to recycled retro fabrics and re-worked clothing, alongside jumble sale chic in its original form that can cost you as little as £3 an item. Taking the lead is Junk, an award-winning boutique based on Dale St, specialising in second-hand clothing and accessories, and also including its own exclusive fashion label featuring retro garments that have been re-crafted for a new era. Pop Boutique on Oldham St incorporates more than just some of the finest selections of second-hand fashions; it also houses a café, a basement filled with retro furnishings and kitchenware, and even a barbershop, kitting you out with everything you could ever need to stand out on the high street and at home.

Retro Rehab is awash with beautiful one-off, vintage dresses and accessories. For the bargain-hunter in us all, Ryan Vintage sells just about everything you could ask for - a chaotic but rewarding assortment of second-hand clothing, furnishings

and unbeatable selection of leather footwear, all cheaply priced, with its sister shop a little further up Oldham St. Rockers specialises in rockabilly and 50s styles, Thunder Egg, a label originally set up in Afflecks, is focused on keeping Manchester well-stocked with the latest in cult Japanese trends, and Oxfam Originals sources some of the most striking high-end fashion vintage and designer pieces donated to its shops, with the proceeds all going to charity.

32

Page 33: The Manchester Style Guide

For independent but established labels the collection of boutiques on Thomas St is a must. Renegade Marmalade is an underground treasure trove of unusual womenswear labels, all globally sourced and therefore

not readily available anywhere else in the UK. For the best in original menswear, Oi Polloi specialises in stocking innovative, high quality labels and The Thomas St. Post Office could almost be mistaken for

an art gallery with its exquisitely sparse layout and tenderly selected streetwear and accessories, including many limited edition and rare items.

Cow, one of the latest independent arrivals to Manchester, has branched out into the city; its store is located across from Oldham St on Piccadilly, and proves that independent retail and vintage fashion don’t just belong in the Northern Quarter.

The independent retail sector of Manchester continues to go from strength to strength, and with the enduring support of those who choose to take a detour from the mass market, will remain a strong, symbolic beacon of this city’s hardworking, talented creative individuals and industries.

The launch pad of Wayne Hemingway’s Red or Dead brand, it’s also a favourite fashion haunt of celebs such as supermodel Agyness Deyn. A real Manchester must-visit.

The North has been responsible for many illustrious careers in fashion. From Grande Dame Vivienne Westwood to Matthew Willamson and more recently Henry Holland.

NOrTHErNBut the story doesn’t stop there, as a new class of fashion graduates looks set to follow in their glamorous footsteps.

Recent success story 22-year-old Rebecca Thomson, a Fashion graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University, beat over 1,000 other young designers to win the much coveted £20,000 River Island Gold Award at the Graduate Fashion Week show finale in London. The event, which features only the most remarkable student designs from over 35 universities, is the largest of its kind in the world. Most notably, Manchester Metropolitan University’s show of 18 graduate collections was applauded by The Daily Telegraph’s Hilary Alexander as being "one of the strongest to come down the Graduate Fashion Week catwalk”.

Headed by programme leader Alison Welsh, trustee of Graduate Fashion Week and former fashion forecasting consultant, the course boasts an impressive collection of awards, including the Graduate Fashion Week Zandra Rhodes prize, and the first British Fashion Council/Drapers Record Best Portfolio Award in 2007. The strength of the MMU Fashion course’s alumni, consistent acclaim at Graduate Fashion Week, and well deserved links to the industry have ensured its increasing popularity, with thousands of students eager to snap up a place each year. Alastair Waite, previously head designer of menwear at Next studied on the course, Jocelyn Coleman was enlisted as designer at Henleys immediately after graduating, and Aitor Throup, another MMU Fashion graduate and acclaimed illustrator and fashion designer, has since worked with everyone from Topman to Stone Island and Umbro.

Recent graduates have set the fashion world alight with their vision and ability. Nabil El Nayal scooped the Graduate Fashion Week Womenswear Award in 2008, and is tipped as the ‘next face of British womenswear’. He was awarded a BFC scholarship to study MA Womenswear at the Royal College of Art. Hasan Hejazi, recent graduate and all-round Mancunian success story, is now the toast of the London fashion set, and 40 of his graduate collection designs have been snapped up by Harrods. Asha Modi went on to win the 2009 North West Young Designer of the Year Award, and Holly Russell, another alumnus, won The Best of Manchester Fashion Award 2009. Russell became an overnight sensation after Dazed and Confused magazine’s fashion director and stylist Nicola Formichetti flew Holly’s collection out to the USA, resulting in Lady Gaga selecting one

of the garments for her appearance at the Billboard Women in Music Awards. Holly has since created a garment for Lady Gaga’s World Tour. Many graduates of MMU’s Fashion degree have gone on to secure places on the prestigious MA courses at the Royal College of Art and Central St. Martins in London too.

Meanwhile, the accolades just keep on coming for Fashion at Manchester School of Art, with alumni featuring, yet again, an award-winning array of new designers bound for fashion glory. Penny Armstrong, whose final collection featured vibrant and energetic designs inspired by human anatomy and Native American art and culture, has secured a place at Parsons School of Design in New York City. Also, Chloé Lennox’s ‘Zoanthid’ collection, composed of ethereal coral reef digi-print and rich, fluid fabrics, caught the eye of Islington’s My

Sugarland boutique in London, and is now being sold there. These are new designers whose names have already gained prominence before their graduate collections have barely made it off the catwalk.

Packed with such up-and-coming design talent, it’s no wonder that Manchester is always one step ahead of the latest trends. As this army of catwalk kings and queens-to-be create the most buzzing student shopping experience in the city.
