This month we welcome old timer David Hanson

to the club. David goes back to the AIPA days and found us while browsing the web. We also thank everyone else for their support of the WTFDA.

Here’s more from David Hanson: “I didn't realize WTFDA was still going. I joined the AIPA in 1957. My TV-DX logs go back to July 8th of that year. When WTFDA was started I also joined up. I have

several back issues from 2001 and 2002. I can remember the names of some of the AIPAers and DXers at the time: Ferdie Dombrowski, Gary Olson, Dave Janowiak, Bedford Brown, Bill Eckberg, Bill Grant, Bob Seybold, Bill Draeb, and a few others but I'm sure by reviewing back issues of VUD it will refresh my memory even further. Here's a brief History: I first noticed strong interference on KDAL channel 3 from Duluth, MN. I turned the antenna and the interfering station came in clearly, better than I had ever seen KDAL. The station was WTAR-TV from Norfolk, VA. I became a rabid TV-DXer after

that. I lived in Washburn,

Wisconsin (on Lake Superior) at the time and was 17 years old. Because the only TV we could get was over the hill and 70+ miles away we had

huge Winegard "Traveling-Wave" antennas. The 7 to 10 elements were actually folded dipoles slanted backward. The gain was terrific on the low-band

channels. Our other Duluth channel was WDSM-6. At the time I worked for the local TV repairman so I had access to a big antenna at his cost. I was into photography at the time so I set up my Argus twin-lens reflex on a chair in front of the TV and began photographing test patterns and call letter ID,s. I have hundreds of black and white (and later color) photos. I DXed sporadically through my college days and wanderings in the 60s until 1970 when I settled down and built a house on a high hill near Eau Claire, WI. I was already a ham radio op. with the call K9ZVZ. Up went the antennas and I enjoyed many years of e-skip and some unbelievable tropo. On one foggy night my 3 watt 2 meter hand-held HT got multiple CW responses on every repeater frequency in the 144-147 MHz band ranging from Boise, ID to Binghamton, NY and Indianapolis to KC, MO. Needless to say the TV was so crowded that I actually could not pick out more than a few IDs. The site was also terrific for auroral skip and early morning test pattern meteor skip. I sold the place a year ago and the antennas all had to be taken down. I do have a trailer at the QTH of W0AIH though and have three cables into his main "chalet" where hundreds of antennas are terminated, I can connect to any 3 of them (like the Africa rhombic) and talk all over the world. There is also a VHF UHF "shack" there but I cannot connect to it. If I want to use the antennas I have to get permission from AIH's son-in-law and bring up a small flat screen. However he lets me connect my Kenwood TS-690 to the 6 meter 1500 watt amplifier when the band is open. I can select from no less than 8 6 meter yagis, some stacked 4x4 and others with multiple elements up on 180 foot rotating towers. What a rush when 6 is open. I will return to WI in June. I still have a cottage in Washburn but so far no reception even from Duluth. I am surrounded by 70 and 80 foot trees. I spend half the summer there and the other half in the trailer near Eau Claire, WI. Please Google W0AIH and see the antenna "farm." I retired in 1990 to Mission, TX. I DXed a little but had taken up birding and spent years traveling the globe. When digital TV came in I felt that my DX days were over. I had cable and that was the end. By sheer happenstance I was using whispernet last week to see where propagation on 6 meters was coming down and happened onto Bill Hepburn’s site. At the bottom was the WTFDA logo. I almost fell over. As you know, I joined that very day. My main Concern is letting go of all my logs and photos so they can be archived. If that can be done or if someone in the club can offer advice I would appreciate that also. You may feel free to

disseminate this letter and contact information to any or all of the club members you think may be interested. I would feel better communicating with members interested in what I have and discussing possibilities by e-mail or text. My contact info needn't be guarded by brick walls and can be passed on to anyone who wants to talk DX and archives. So here it is: Dave Hanson, 1427 Evergreen Ave. Mission, TX 78572. DXer for 61 years! Landline:956-581-0945, Smartphone; 956-330-4416. (text OK.), e-mail: [email protected]. Website is: www.k9zvz.com (lots of info there.) I am fascinated as well as dismayed at the commercialization of TV with the new format. I guess I shouldn't have given away my huge low band antenna just last month. I replaced it with a 3 element 6 meter Cushcraft yagi. It might be tunable for the low band stuff.”

David mentioned some other early WTFDA members. Bob Seybold, Gary Olson, Bill Draeb and Bill Eckberg are still club members, however I think only TV DXer Bob Seybold is active to some extent in the hobby now. WTFDA member and club treasurer Dave Janowiak passed away in 2004.

CHINESE DTV BOXES

From Jim Thomas: “There was quite a lengthy discussion about Cuba selecting the DTMB standard on the WTFDA Forums a few years ago. There is a guy

named Eric that lives in Havana that has shared some information about the choice to go with DTMB rather than ATSC. Radiocuba, the broadcast regulator in Cuba, originally selected ATSC as the standard but the roadblock was the US trade embargo. Radiocuba didn't stand a chance of getting the ATSC technology in equipment from the US. Cuba deals with China quite regularly for electronics, so a deal was struck to use DTMB (the China standard) and China would give Cuba a bunch of *free* stuff. Currently there are NO widescreen TV's available in Cuba WITH a DTMB tuner installed. It was decided a long time ago the Cuban market isn't big enough to support that approach in television manufacturing. What the Cubans got from the Chinese government for the modified DTMB model for the Cuban TV market is a standard def box and an HD model. And the government had to help the

public out - citizens of Cuba got the standard definition boxes at cost. No one could afford a retail price on the boxes. Anyone that wanted or wants one of the HD models has to pay full price. And those boxes are almost impossible to import into the US, unless you want to order a quantity of 1000. The WTFDA has a few members in Florida that have tried to get a DTMB box for some time now.”

WHAT’S HOT AND WHAT’S NOT Here’s our list from stats taken from the WTFDA FM Station Database, of the most used radio formats on the air today. Now we are not necessarily talking about the most popular formats (although that could be said in most cases), but the formats used by the greatest number of radio stations in the US. When you’re hearing stations by skip this summer, keep this list in mind. What formats are you hearing the most? Here’s the list of formats with the approximate number of stations broadcasting that format: 1.RELIGIOUS TEACHING (3020), 2. VARIETY (2700), 3. COUNTRY (2170), 4. CONTEMPORARY

CHRISTIAN (1930), 5. NEWS/TALK (1460), 6. CLASSIC HITS (1040), 7. ADULT CONTEMPORARY (930), 8. CLASSIC ROCK (780), 9. CHR (780), 10. REGIONAL MEXICAN (750), 11. SPORTS (750), 12. HOT AC (700), 13. ADULT ALTERNATIVE (480), 14. TALK (470), 15. CHRISTIAN CHR/ROCK (460), 16. ROCK (420), 17. CLASSIC COUNTRY (410), 18. OLDIES (370), 19. CLASSICAL (320) and 20. ADULT HITS (280). Are you surprised by some of the formats on this list? One surprise to me seems to be the Regional Mexican format in the #10 position. I’m also surprised to see the Rock format down at #16 but I’m not surprised to see the religious and country formats up at the top. Rock and active rock are almost dead. What you have here is a general list of formats. There are well over 200 formats in the FM database and many are combinations of two formats (News, News/Talk, News/Talk/Classical, etc). I do believe that you will hear your share of Country and Religious Teaching stations this summer.

WTFDA MEMBERSHIP SURVEY In life, we all have expectations: expectations in the products we buy and the companies we buy them from. We also expect certain things from the clubs we join. Expectations vary from person to person. Let’s talk about yours. As a club member: 1. Does the WTFDA meet your expectations Y/N (If no, please explain) 2. Does the VUD meet your expectations Y/N (If no, why?) 3. If you could change anything regarding the WTFDA, what would you change? 4. If you could change anything about the VUD, what would you change? 5. Is the WTFDA FM Database important to you Y/N 6. Are the WTFDA Forums important to you Y/N 7. Is the WTFDA Bulletin Board important to you Y/N Do you still expect to be a WTFDA club member two years from now? If you decide not to remain a WTFDA member, what factors would cause you to leave? We’d like your input! You could print out this survey and mail it back to us. Or, better yet, you could send us an email to [email protected]. Mark #1 through #7 on your email and put a Y or an N next to it. If you have comments, put those in afterwards. I’ll share them with the BoD, the VUD publisher and VUD editors. Thank you!

WLNY-TV on Long Island seeks Special Temporary Authority to move early from their current channel47 to channel 28. (which is not their post-repack channel)

Channel 28 became available on April 24th, when WNBC moved to channel 36 to share on the WNJU transmitter. WLNY wishes to take over WNBC’s old channel. They expect to remain there until

August of 2019. At that time, WLNY’s Phase 4 happens in the repack, and they move to their permanent channel 29.

The purpose of the move is to allow T-Mobile to begin operation early on channel 47.

I assume the WSFJ information in Ohio is correct. The “paperwork” filed with the FCC says WSFJ is suspending operation on channel 27 at Burlington, New Jersey?? (which are the location and RF channel of co-owned WGTW) My information is WGTW has already implemented its sharing agreement with WMGM-TV.

WPHY-CD is currently operating on channel 50. It’s scheduled to move to channel 22 in Phase 4, between June 22nd, 2019 and August 2nd.

WTVE Reading, Penna. is operating a Distributed Transmission System on channel 25. It’s scheduled to begin sharing on the WPHY-CD transmitter by July 23rd. One of the WTVE DTS transmitters is located in the Roxborough antenna farm in Philadelphia.

WPHY proposes to move temporarily to channel 25. If granted, it would take over the WTVE transmitter in Roxborough, reducing its power from 126kw to 15kw. It would operate on 25 until its place in the repack comes up, at which time it would move to its permanent channel 22.

The Sioux Falls channel 10 STA application is by Kaylee Lynn Stein. She’s known for filing numerousungrantable applications for new FM stations in the San Francisco area. (and some wishing to serve San Francisco from transmitter sites in the Pacific Ocean) Do not expect to see FCC approval for thisapplication.

K31GL shared their antenna with a (then) co-owned station. The stations were sold separately; the new owners of the other station moved to a VHF channel. (to avoid displacement in the repack) Since they no longer needed a UHF antenna, they removed it – leaving K31GL with no antenna. K31GL wishes to hang a temporary, smaller, antenna so they can return to the air and keep their license valid while waiting for a permanent new channel in the repack.

Thanks to Matt Sittel for the information on the LPTV moves in Salina, Kansas. These two stations must have Special Temporary Authority as their permanent applications for these channels are listed as still pending.

Utah has earned its own section in this month’s column(grin). Numerous translators in that state have filed to move to new, repack-safe channels. Note that EVERY high-VHF channel will be in use in Helper, Utah.

UPCOMING METEOR SHOWERS Eta AquariidsActive from April 19th to May 26th , 2018 (Peak night May 6-7)The Eta Aquariids are a strong shower when viewed from the southern tropics. From the

equator northward, they usually only produce medium rates of 10-30 per hour just before dawn. Fromthe equator to 25S they can produce rates of 40-60 per hour just before dawn at maximum. The longer nights in the southern hemisphere allows the radiant to rise higher in their sky. South of 25S the radiant altitude actually decreases. Activity is good for a week centered the night of maximum activity. These are swift meteors that produce a high percentage of persistent trains, but few fireballs.

Radiant: 22:32 -1° - ZHR: 55 - Velocity: 42 miles/sec (swift - 66.9km/sec) - Parent Object: 1P/Halley

FACEBOOK DX!

Most WTFDA members do not use Facebook for various reasons, but Facebook is a great place for reporting DX and showing off your DX loggings. Most of these were logged during intense Gulf tropo on April 17-19th. Since TV and FM DXing is a public group, any group member can post there.
