THE LUXMANOR CITIZENS ASSOCIATION The Luxmanor Greensheet Growing a sense of community! May 2020 Letter from the President Dear Neighbors, The Greensheet returns! We hope you find this edition informative especially as we all are coping with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our lives. There has been a real need for community and neighbors to rally along side neighbors, and Luxmanor has stepped up to the challenge. I appreciate those in our community who have been checking in on their neighbors, helping children and elderly in need, volunteering to provide and create masks, alleviating hunger and providing meals to hospital personnel. I want to thank the many health professionals, first responders and other essential personnel in our community -- you really are the heroes during these difficult times. We wish for a return to health for those who are ill and extend our condolences to those in our community who have lost loved ones. We at LCA have been sending out important information through our online platforms, creating virtual activities and sustaining community efforts to enhance our neighborhoods -- Luxmanor, Windermere and the Oaks. We have represented the neighborhood to state and county officials, agencies and schools. We have held virtual Board meetings on Zoom, broadcast on Facebook Live so neighbors can “attend.” These efforts are critical to keeping a sense of community while we confront the realities of the virus, children home from school, quarantines, illness, social distance and being at home. We have heard many neighbors miss our online communications and hope this Greensheet will add to our efforts to inform you and to the resilience of our neighborhood as we face the implications of the virus together. There is a lot going on! Join us on Facebook Live on our Lux Manor Facebook page on Thursday, May 14 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. to hear from the candidates in the primary for the Board of Education At Large member before you cast your mail in ballot. LCA's Candidates Forum is one of very few opportunities to see all the candidates. This is a nonpartisan race where all registered voters have a say. Also, there are a range of upcoming social events on Zoom for residents of all ages, from seminars on current topics, local chef demonstrations, discussions with experts who live in our neighborhoods, geocatching for the kids and more Bingo!!! Our Board Meetings on Facebook Live are archived. There, you can hear from Senator Susan Lee about new laws and budget troubles in Annapolis, how to get assistance from our elected officials and agencies and contact information to fight domestic violence. You can learn more about WSSC work in our neighborhood, our efforts to track all of the development around us or the school boundary analysis, or that Tilden Middle School, Rock Terrace School and Luxmanor Elementary School are all scheduled to open this fall. Updates from our Committees Environmental Sandy Ladden- Rappaport, Chair

Over the last two years, LCA has been partnering with Friends of Cabin John Creek (FoCJC) in a Stormwater Solutions program to allow residents with stormwater issues get priority attention from the Montgomery County’s RainScapes program. There were more than 50 attendees at the three informational meetings, and 25 homeowners have requested a free site assessment to help them identify opportunities to manage stormwater in their yard. FoCJC is continuing to work with Luxmanor homeowners to get RainScapes projects installed and qualify for the RainScapes Rewards Rebate – now up to $7500 per property! Eligible projects include Rain Gardens, Conservation Landscaping, Water Harvesting (rain barrels and cisterns) and Permeable Pavement installations.

Stormwater issues of great concern to Luxmanor homeowners include basement flooding, ponding of water on property, destruction of landscaping, and long periods of standing water which increase mosquito populations. Excessive stormwater runoff that flows down the

School NewsAs most of you know by now, we are doing online learning in Montgomery County. Some are adjusting better than others and it can take time to adjust. Please let us know at the LCA if you need any help. On May 6, the State Superintendent of Schools Karen Salmon announced that the students will not be returning this 2019-2020 school year.

In addition, MCPS is evaluating how the semester's grades will be finalized, as the 4th quarter grades are pass/fail. The Board of Education is making their decision on May 12 about the semester's grades. If you have any comments, feel free to email the Board of Education.

Regarding our local schools, Luxmanor Elementary and Tilden Middle School are still planning on moving into their new schools this summer. Woodward High School will return to its original location, now where Tilden is, and it will open as a holding school first for Northwood in 2024 and then Woodward will open its doors in 2026. MCPS will tell the community 18 months before how they will fill this new school. Walter Johnson High School is still over-capacity at 120%, so there is a building moratorium until July 1 in the area. They will reevaluate the situation soon.

If you have any questions about the schools, please feel free to reach out to the LCA School Chair, Deborah Berger, 301-793-0711

Stay-at-Home Social Events in the 'Hood!Greetings from Nurit Coombe, Social Chair

This wonderful neighborhood always comes together as a family in times of uncertainty! It is so heartwarming to see neighbors helping neighbors throughout Luxmanor… running errands, checking up on each other, delivering groceries, and gathering together in new ways to create a caring community. I feel so blessed to be a part of it. And we had some fun times last month in spite of the unusual circumstances!

We started out with the GREAT LCA BAKE- OFF competition and had some amazing entries. We have so many creative and talented chefs in our neighborhood, it was difficult to pick a winner. We were impressed by our third-place winner, Sarah Koegel and her son, who have a great love for peanut butter and entered a yummy looking peanut butter pie with peanut butter blossoms. We were delighted by the “Jetti Spaghetti” cake submitted by the Silberman family – the cake looked amazing and the “Jetti Spaghetti Meatball Man” stole our hearts! The artistry of our first place winner, Julie Yeo, simply astounded us with “Meringue Chicks and Chickens” – they looked too pretty to eat! Congratulations to you all!

The fun continued with our rousing, Bingo game on April 19th. We had over 90 participants of all ages who were on the edges of their seats waiting for the next number to be called! It was so nice to gather together over Zoom and share a family game. Congratulations to our winners, Jennifer Schwartz, Lidymar Gonzalez, and Joanne & Tom Kee. This event was so much fun that we’ve had many requests for another round, so be on the lookout for an invitation to the next Family Bingo Night soon!

I look forward to finding new and creative ways to connect as neighbors in the coming month. I’m planning a Local Chef Cooking Demonstration on Zoom, another Family Bingo Night, and several other virtually interactive experiences. As always, I welcome your suggestions and input, so please call me at 301-346-5252, see ya at our next event!

It Takes a Village...

NORTH BETHESDA VILLAGE UPDATE

North Bethesda Village is a grass-roots community organization in which neighbors come together to provide mutual support and assistance, as well as to foster social connections through various planned, shared activities.

North Bethesda Village began as a modest effort by a small number of community members in mid-2019. While we are not yet fully operational as a Senior Village, we have begun to serve our community in a number of modest ways. Most significantly, during this period of social isolation, we have maintained frequent contact with the several hundred individuals on our email distribution list. Through group emails, we have shared advice, updates, and encouragement from Montgomery County government, Suburban Hospital, and elsewhere. We intend to continue to offer this service until such time as life returns to some semblance of “normal”.

Meanwhile, the North Bethesda Village Planning Group is continuing its efforts to establish a network of neighbors for the 20852 community, What a time to try to envision our Village! But what better time to work on a framework for what we hope to be a robust ccommunity service in the years to come?

Toward that end, we have drafted Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation and plan to file soon as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation with the State of Maryland. We have also begun work on developing an attractive and informative website to connect North Bethesda Village with those who wish to learn more about our efforts.

We need your help and your talents to build the many components of the Village! Specifically, we are seeking individuals to take the lead in website management, newsletter development, database management, tracking volunteer hours, committee members, social events, services and communications.

We are also seeking a small number of people to service on our Board of Directors. Interested? Please email [email protected] tuned for more news on the North Bethesda Village in the months to come! Caroline Levenson, LCA Resident and North Bethesda Village Co-Founder
