A couple weeks ago, thanks to a suggestion by our very

own Jana Postma, I read a book called 7: an experi-

mental mutiny against excess by author and speaker Jen

Hatmaker.

Seven words: My life will never be the same.

First, some background. Jen Hatmaker decided to try an

experiment in simplifying her life. She chose seven are-

as where she needed the most renovation. These areas

were food, clothes, possessions, media, waste, spending

and stress. Next, she decided to dedicate one month to

simplify each of these areas and reduce them to seven

simple choices. For example, in the month she chose to

focus on food, she only ate the same seven foods for the

entire 30 days. For the month about possessions, she

gave away seven items every single day. You get the

picture. This woman decided to make some radical

changes in her life and write about it so others could see

an example of how to live in an intentionally simple way.

Elections for next year’s Student Govern-

ment are coming up in less than two

weeks! Here are some introductions to two

of the “Executive Committees” that are

running:

Stephen Eising, Kristi Selle and

Renae Rubingh

Biographies:

President: Greetings, I am Stephen Eising.

I will be a senior this fall in the Pre-Sem

program. I have served and been active on

Student Government this year past, and

through my dealings with the Government,

as well as with Staff and Faculty, I feel

properly equipped to be your student

president. I am fully willing to be a proper

liaison between the students of Kuyper and

the faculty and staff of Kuyper.

Vice President: My name is Kristi Selle. I

will be a third year student in the Music &

Worship program. I served on Student

Government this past year and am very ex-

cited to serve another year. As the Vice

President I will work to be in communica-

tion with the student body and staff as to

the happenings of Student Government

and the Kuyper Community in general.

Treasurer: My name is Renae Rubingh. I

will be a second year student studying In-

tercultural Studies and Psychology. As the

Treasurer, I would not only be the

“middleman” when it comes to financial

transactions, but I will also do my best to

listen to any ideas, questions, or concerns

anyone has for the Student Government as

a whole.

Our proposed platform stands as follows:

We will work with certain parties to

greatly diminish the number of mass

emails.

Our Vice President will compile

emails from most offices either every

day or just three days a week to

reduce the number of mass e-mails.

There will be a deadline, though this

will not include personal e-mails or

emergency notifications.

We will work with the Registrar’s Office

to offer further clarity to the advising

system.

This will include offering a system

so the students will be better

prepared when they come to their

advisors, and the advisors will be

able to offer information for four

year plans when possible.

We will meet with students and staff

regularly to be better liaisons between

the two.

The Class Representatives will be

held accountable to meet with

their classes regularly, as we, the

Executive Community, will meet

with the staff.

We commit to doing rounds

through the dorms and to stop in

the commuter lounge to better

understand the needs of the stu-

dents.

We will work towards increasing the

maximum credit load for full-time stu-

dents.

This would offer the ability to take

up to 17-18 credits without being

charged extra.

T h e L o o p ! P a g e 3

We will seek to obtain coat/bag cubbies

for the Commuter Lounge.

The commuter community has

requested storage space in which

to keep their bags and coats for

the day. We hope to fulfill this

request.

We will keep the students updated on

the happenings of Student Government

There will be a weekly updated bul-

letin board in the Student Center.

Unity 2013: Working Towards and

Ephesians 2 Campus

Meet the Executive Team:

Matthew Grochocinski: President

Senior in Audio Production

Government experience: Matthew has

served on Student Government as the

Student Activities Committee representative

since April of 2012.

Background: Matthew started attending

Kuyper College in the winter semester of

2010, at the age of 22. He has served as a

volunteer on the Spiritual Life committee for

four (4) semesters. He has also served as a

volunteer on the Student Activities commit-

tee for five (5) semesters. In the 2010-2011

academic year, he was responsible for the

creation and supervision of the Kuyper Life

Social Media Group. He is currently on his

second semester of service as the Student

Activities committee Student Intern.

Kelsey Palmquist: Vice President

Sophomore in Music and Worship

Government experience: Kelsey is

currently serving on Student Government as

Secretary and as the Kuyper Life repre-

sentative for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Background: Kelsey started attending

Kuyper College as a freshman in the

closely knit organization in the interest of

promoting healthy lifestyles, building

fellowship, encouraging spiritual growth,

and developing servant attitudes within the

student body. We want to see a more

organized and unified student run campus.

In the past, there have been headaches and

frustrations with different student groups

planning overlapping events or hosting

events with themes that clash with one

another. We hope that by unifying these

student organizations, we will begin to see

events that complement each other in theme

and direction.

In addition to student organization

unification we will also work to change the

amount of involvement and communica-

tion between students and their Student

Government representatives. As an exec-

utive team, we want to use a portion of our

Student Government funds each year to

organize a monthly forum, open to all

students. This forum will consist of two

parts: an open Q&A session with the execu-

tive team as well as a small group Q&A

session led by respective student repre-

sentatives. Our Student Government cannot

effectively serve our student body without a

comfortable and open line of communica-

tion with one another.

We will strive to make Kuyper College an

institution that functions as one body of

believers, effectively serving Christ’s

church and world.

Don’t forget to

vote on February

27th or 28th!

Fall of 2011. She has been the Kuyper Life

co-intern since last Spring. She looks

forward to the opportunity to continue

serving in this capacity and more if elected

as Vice President of Student Government!

Cassie Terpstra: Treasurer

Senior in Music and Worship

Government Experience: Cassie is

currently serving on Student Government

as the Spiritual Life representative. This is

her first semester on Student Government.

Background: Cassie started attending

Kuyper College in the fall semester of

2009, at the age of 17. She has served as a

volunteer on the Spiritual Life committee

for three (3) semesters, and is currently on

her first semester of service as the Spiritual

Life Committee Student Intern.

Platform:

We, as a campaigning executive commit-

tee, have two major goals for both Student

Life and Student Government next year:

1. Bring all of our student groups

together to act as a cooperative

organization whose ultimate

purpose is to serve the student

body.

2. Increase the level of involve-

ment and communication be

tween students and their respect-

tive Student Government

representatives.

We are in the process of creating a

detailed proposal that will restructure the

way student groups are currently orga-

nized. The entire proposal will still take

some time to complete, but we can share

some of our main ideas. We have many

student groups organizing student events

and gatherings. We believe that these

separate student organizations need to

be acting as a unified body under the

umbrella of Student Life. Our idea for

these groups is to have them operate as a

As a big thank you for reading, we have a

special prize for you! But there’s a catch. You

must be able to recite these three things at

the Student Life front desk from memory.

What May-term trip is the academic

office looking to fill?

Who are the six students featured in the

Student Government Nominee article?

Name one event happening on Friday

If you can name these three things, you can

either receive a candy bar or enter in a raffle

for ice skating gift certificates at the end of

the month! There will be four raffle winners.
