“I’m giving up whisky for Lent”

“But you don’t drink whisky,” replied my wife. “That’s why I’m giving it up!” We’re in that period known as Lent...pancakes, Ash Wednesday, Mother’s Day, Hot Cross Buns, ‘Good Friday’, Easter Eggs and all that stuff. Where did it all come from?

Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day or ‘Mardi Gras’ (fat Tuesday to the French) marks the eve of Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, during which you weren’t meant to indulge yourself, so pancakes were a last chance to ‘blow out’ before Lent. The word ’shrove’ comes from the word ’shrive’ meaning to confess and so people would confess their sins to the priest, they would then be shriven in readiness for Lent.

You’ll often hear people talk about giving things up for Lent, to lose weight or drink less. Lent itself is the 40 days from Ash Wednesday leading up to Easter Day and is taken from the story in the Bible of Jesus being tempted in the desert for 40 days before he began his ministry. During this period Christians would do something different to deepen their faith e.g. pray more regularly or give more time to studying the Bible. It’s a time for spiritual growth rather than dieting!

Mothering Sunday was the Sunday mid-way through Lent when strict abstinence was relaxed. In days gone by girls ‘in service’ were allowed, by the more generous ‘masters and mistresses’, a day off to visit their mothers. Today, like so many things, it’s become another day in the commercial calendar when the price of flowers rockets because children want to buy their mothers a gift.

Good Friday marks the day on which Jesus died on a cross and because he gave his life in love for us to open the way to God, we call it ‘good’ Friday. Hot cross buns used to be eaten only on this day to celebrate this event. Now you can buy them all year round.

The word Easter comes from the Anglo Saxon word ‘Eostre’, the name of the pagan goddess of spring, given new meaning as people became Christians— a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.

The Christian calendar is about a journey: from Jesus’ birth to his death and resurrection and it reminds us that we are all passing through this life on our journey. Many have gone before us and many will follow. The good news is that we have a Father in heaven who wants to take our hand on this journey and lead us home.

Christian greetings,

Revd. Bob Politt

EDITORIAL

Welcome to the March edition of the Loddon Valley Link. Winter seemed to arrive briefly this month, but it looks like spring’s approaching fast.

We’re introducing a bit more colour to the magazine this month and adding extra pages, as we never seem to have enough room to fit everything in. Please keep the contributions coming. We love to hear from you.

The Stratfield Turgis interpretation board is due for installation shortly and we’ve included a taste in the centre pages together with a leaflet covering some of the lovely walks in the area. A great push to get out and about. Stratfield Turgis have also given the recreation ground a bit of a spruce up on p13

I had a great ‘research’ visit to Sherfield Village Brewery on p28

We’ve got some discussion on local planning issues on p22/23

Whitewater Primary school is 300 years old on p29

We’re still looking for a new editor for the link so please get in touch if you fancy giving it a go.

As ever, comments, criticism and especially compliments to [email protected].

From Sheena Archer.

I recently received this enquiry from Julie Irwin:

"My late father told me that he was taken to a hospital in your area after suffering injuries in Palestine in 1947. He talked about the village (Sherfield on Loddon) and also Stratfield Saye House,

I believe that he was sent somewhere in the area for rehabilitation. It is a long shot, but do you know of any establishments in your area, commonly known for looking after wounded soldiers at this time."

If you know of local buildings that were used as temporary hospitals please let me know and I will pass the information to Julie.

Sheena Archer 01256 882099 or [email protected] Thank you for your help.

Biffaward funding comes to Stratfield Turgis

Plans to improve facilities on the recreation ground at Stratfield Turgis have been boosted by a grant from Biffaward, a multi-million pound environment fund managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts which uses landfill tax credits donated by Biffa Waste Services.

Stratfield Turgis Parish Meeting made the successful application for funding through Biffaward’s Small Grants Scheme, introduced to enable groups to access lower levels of funding in order to improve the quality of life in their community. The grant has enabled the slide to be fully refurbished with additional new safety surfacing to meet health and safety requirements.

A representative from Biffaward, Gillian French, Programme Manager , said ““Biffaward is delighted to support this project, which has been led by local residents. Outdoor spaces are incredibly important; the improved area will be a fun, stimulating and engaging place where children and their parents can meet and socialise.”

Sheila Campbell, Chairman of the Parish Meeting thanked Biffaward for the grant.

Update from Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council New cemetery The parish council would like to take this opportunity to advise residents that the extension to the existing burial ground in St Leonard’s Church is now open for burials. Although the new cemetery is accessed via a gate from the existing site, it is under the ownership and management of the parish council. The ground is unconsecrated and totally secular so able to welcome those from all faiths together with those who hold no particular belief. The cemetery has a lawned section for burials where a headstone may be erected and also a woodland section where memorials are not permitted but which will be planted with trees to create a natural environment. Separating these two areas is a wild flower meadow. Over the years, the parish council intends to provide more soft and hard landscaping including a memorial garden to provide a place of quiet reflection for relatives. The parish council believes in offering as much choice as possible to the bereaved and has attempted to keep regulations to a minimum but some are necessary to ensure that the cemetery is a safe and fitting place for all those who visit and work in it. A full list of the regulations and fees may be obtained from the parish clerk or viewed online at www.sherfieldonloddon-pc.gov.uk. Hitting the Cold Spots Hampshire County Council has launched its “Hitting the Cold Spots” initiative which is aimed at preventing vulnerable people suffering from the impact of cold weather. This takes the form of an information pack on a number of topics and contains a room thermometer and a snood. Also included is freephone number to the Environment Centre where practical support can be provided such as a free visit from an Advisor to discuss benefits and tariff queries and organising insulation, loft clearance boiler repairs etc. If you would like one of these packs or know anyone that may benefit from one then please contact the clerk, details below. The next Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council meeting will be on Wednesday 14 March at 7.30pm in the Liddell Hall – all welcome! A Strategic Planning View from Bramley and Sherfield Borough Councillors The Borough Council is legally obliged to draw up a Local Development Framework (LDF) – a set of policies and plans that will guide future planning and development decisions. Once formally adopted, this framework will be one of the key factors in planning applications. The main document in this framework is the Core Strategy. This planning document identifies where development will take place, how new jobs will be supported and how the environment of the Borough will be protected and enhanced. It also allocates major

(Continued on page 23)

SOLVE (Save Our Loddon Valley Environment) Report – 2,300 houses near you

The Manydown Company (MDC) has been granted an expedited Judicial Review (JR) hearing on March 13/14. This challenges the legality of the Council’s Core Strategy. It is separate from SOLVE and CountryWatch; we have held back on our JR, to avoid duplication. If successful this could halt the Council’s preparation of the Core Strategy forcing them to make 2000 acres of taxpayers’ land, Manydown, available for development. Your Councillors support the exclusion of Manydown and 2300 extra houses around their wards: re - letter 26th February in the Basingstoke Gazette. More letters and articles followed including a reply from SOLVE. Ask your Borough Councillor why he has, in effect, chosen to dump 2300 houses on your doorstep. Despite the JR, the consultation period on the draft Core Strategy, without Manydown, began on 10th February and ends on 23rd March - see the Council website. sites and locations for development to meet the needs of our growing population. We have worked hard to ensure that Sherfield village itself does not need to build any new homes between now and 2027. In addition, we have campaigned to bring the number of homes to be built each year down from 945 to 594 – protecting as many greenfield sites as possible. You can support these approaches in the consultation that is now open and will last until 23rd March 2012.Visit the Borough Council website at: www.basingstoke.gov.uk/go/corestrategy However, there is a need to have some development on the periphery of the Town – including Redlands, on the Parish boundary, to be part of a development adjacent to Chineham. We have lobbied to ensure that policies are in place to prevent any further encroachment of housing beyond this site, but there is still more to do. We want to ensure that only the right policies are included in the LDF – and, for that, we need your help. If you would like to feed in to this process, please email us directly at the address below. One other word on the lips of some residents is “Manydown”. What is it and what is happening? Manydown is an expanse of land to the west of Basingstoke, which is currently leased jointly to the Borough and County Councils by The Manydown Company (TMC), a private interest. TMC launched a Judicial Review against the Council regarding its decisions not to promote their land for development in this LDF. Contrary to some reports, the Council has made clear that it will be looking at the Manydown land with full scoping and consultation to be carried out, but this takes time. However, TMC were seeking a “stay” to prevent the Council from publishing the pre-submission Core Strategy for consultation. On 8th February the High Court dismissed the application for a “stay” but agreed, in line with normal process, that the Judicial Review hearing would still be heard in March. If progress on the Core Strategy is delayed, then there could be adverse consequences for the Borough as a whole – including Sherfield. Without a LDF in place, developers will be able to put in planning applications for sites without the Council having any strategic control of the phasing and so on. People seeking to stall the process should think very carefully about the potential impact of their actions. Cllr Rhydian Vaughan and Cllr Ranil Jayawardena [email protected] | 01256 322207

Mine’s a pint by Simon Boase

Continuing the occasional theme of featuring local enterprises, I visited the recently formed Sherfield Village Brewery at the invitation of Peter Cook (it’s a tough job …).

Sherfield Village Brewery started life in May 2011 at Goddards Farm, following a couple of months building and fitting out. It’s an ideal location for brewing as the spent mash is recycled directly to the happy cows.

As Pete explained, beer making is simple but the final result is dependent on a few good ingredients and lots of care. Pete’s speciality is the use of New World hops which give his beers their distinctive flavours, with the hops being added both early and late in the brewing process.

I spent a very pleasant hour in Pete's company sampling the latest brews: Delicious chocolaty stout, excellent Hoppy Harrington (my favourite), and the Threesome bitter (but still not sure how I'd ask for that). If you get chance to try I can thoroughly recommend them all. Just listening to Pete talk about his passion and smelling the different hops is a great experience.

Join Clift Surgery’s Patient Representative Group (PRG)

This article is about a new NHS initiative, the Patient Participation Directed Enhanced Service (DES). This is a programme to enhance surgery services according to the specific needs and make-up of the patients in the Practice. For example they may include:

hours of opening and the ability to book ahead

range of skills available – access to different professionals

a choice of modes of contact e.g. face-to-face, phone or electronic contact

enabling care as close to home as possible An important condition is that the practice will only qualify for funding under this scheme if it is able to clearly demonstrate that it has established a Patients Representative Group (PRG) comprising registered patients and has used its best endeavours to ensure that the PRG is representative of its patient community. If you would like to support this initiative, please email Clift Surgery at [email protected] giving your name, your house number/name and postcode and put “Wish to Join PRG” in the subject line. The surgery will acknowledge your request, but then you will not hear anything until the first topic for consultation is distributed. Your email address will be secure and will not be passed to any other party nor will it appear in the distribution of the consultation request emails. Note that in a previous LVL article in September 2011, a PCG (Patient Consultative Group) was described, but this initiative has now been superseded by the PRG. Patients who have already registered for the PCG will be transferred to the list for the PRG and do not need to reapply. Further information on the implementation of the DES can be found at: http://www.productiveprimarycare.co.uk/Data/Sites/1/patient-participation-directed-enhanced-service.pdf

MAIN HALL KITCHEN & GARDEN ROOM

The Main Hall kitchen and Garden Room bar are being united as the hatch between them is being converted into a doorway. More storage will be created in the bar area, which is necessary as the Hall now runs its own bar at Village Hall events and needs to store numerous drinks and glasses. The commercial dishwasher purchased recently will be installed in the bar area, a commercial range cooker will be purchased for the kitchen and there will also be space for a tall fridge. The current small fridge in the kitchen will be replaced by the newer one in the Garden Room. When building work is completed, an industrial non-slip vinyl will be laid in the kitchen and bar area and the Garden Room carpet will be replaced with the same wood effect vinyl as in the Liddell Hall.

CLEANING Just before Christmas, the Village Hall was the subject of a deep clean which included cleaning the ceiling fans in the main hall and all toilets.

GARDEN Rubbish and nettles have been cleared, some levelling and seeding completed and some new concrete paths laid. More work is planned for the Spring which will include a garden area for Happy Faces playgroup to cultivate.

FUNDRAISING As a Charity, the only regular income the Hall has is from its hiring fees so donations and fund raising events are vital to maintain the Hall and carry out further renovation and refurbishments. If you would like to help with fund raising events please contact Alan Ball on 01256 883838.

THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Reported by Ilene Iles

Approximately 40 Members attended our Annual Lunch at BCOT at 12 noon on the 8th February which was kindly organised by Helen Rolton, and we returned to Sherfield Village Hall about 3 p.m. for our monthly Meeting. Dee Bulpitt, our President, opened the Business Meeting at 3.20 p.m. and welcomed everyone. Jerusalem was sung, the Minutes were read, the Treasurer’s Report given by Evelyn Holdaway and correspondence and up-coming events dealt with by Val Denny. She then went on to give details of our spring trip to Alton and Selborne on Tuesday, 17th April, leaving the White Hart at 9.30 a.m., and there was a discussion about possible venues for our autumn trip. Other internal matters were dealt with and the Business Meeting closed at 4 p.m. This was followed by tea/coffee and biscuits and the raffle was drawn bringing proceedings to a close. NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY, 7TH MARCH 2012 AT 2 PM. IN SHERFIELD VILLAGE HALL SPEAKER: MRS M FORBES SUBJECT: CRAFT CRAZY RECYCLER

Report by Gill Fearon

Page 39

As 2012 sees the UK hosting the Olympics, our theme for this year is ‘Taking the Challenge’ and we are encouraged to take on challenges ourselves. Perhaps learn to do something we have been delaying or take up a new hobby or sport. To reflect our theme we have planned a meeting to discuss women who have faced challenges and how they have overcome them. As this year is also the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, we have arranged a meeting entitled ‘Aspects of Diamonds’ and also a debate on the future of the monarchy. Our country theme evening will be Greece, again to reflect the year of the Olympics. We have also planned our usual events such as our evening ramble, Safari Supper, Telephone Quiz and Christmas meal as well as a play reading, music evening and book review. Our February meeting was ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?’ where we all chose three dinner guests and had to explain why we chose them and what we talked about. They could be people who were dead or fictional. People in the media were a popular choice – after all they would have plenty to talk about! Sir David Attenborough was chosen for his knowledge and enthusiasm, Alastair Cook for his expertise on the USA and Julian Pettifer for his experience as a war reporter and more recently his interest in nature. Other media folk included John Peel for his support of new musical talent, Sarah Kennedy for her warm personality, Ian Hislop (chosen twice) for his humour and knowledge of current affairs, and Michael Portillo for his engaging personality in presenting a series of train journeys. One brave member would ask Michel Roux Jnr to dinner! Sailors and adventurers Francis Chichester and Ellen McArthur would have fantastic stories to tell of their round-the-word voyages and what inspired them to do it. Richard Burton was chosen for his lovely voice and Sir John Betjeman for his beautiful poetry. An interesting combination of guests would be St Peter, Abu Bakr and Ananda discussing Jesus, Mohammed and Buddha. For humour Pam Ayres and Dawn French would be given an invitation to dinner and for professionalism and dedication, Betty Boothroyd. This is just a sample of people we would invite and it led to some interesting discussions on the various achievements and personalities of those chosen. Our next meeting will be our Greek evening when we will all bring some Greek food, do a quiz on Greece and listen to some Greek music.

Sherfield and District Gardening Club

Our 2012 schedule continues with two excellent speakers booked for March and April. Anyone interested in gardening will be most welcome to join us at the Sherfield Village Hall at 7:30pm

On Monday 19th March Victoria Ennion will talk about ‘Foliage in Design’. Victoria is a garden designer, expert gardener and lecturer. She trained in horticulture and garden design at Capel Manor College, and has been running her own gardening business since 1998. She worked in the West London area, creating small urban oases as well as working longer term in large NGS gardens. In 2004 she started working at Capel Manor College, teaching horticulture and garden design to adults. In 2009 she left London and moved to Winchester where she set up Crowsfoot Gardens, which specialises in garden design and restoration. (crowsfoot.co.uk) Monday 16th April sees the return of Ray Broughton whose lively talk last February about ‘soil Management’ was very well received. This time Ray will tell us about ‘Plant Propagation’ This talk is based on his own observations and is backed up by years of scientific study and practice. If it’s anything like last year’s talk, he will have us enthralled and scribbling notes to catch his words of wisdom. Ray was trained at RHS Garden Wisley, is a fellow of the Institute of Horticulture and a lecturer for the Royal Horticultural Society.

BASINGSTOKE LADIES’ CHOIR NEEDS YOU!!!

Ladies – can you sing? Our choir, established for nearly 50 years in Basingstoke, is buzzing with some lovely things to look forward to. We are planning a tour to Malta next year with Basingstoke Male Voice Choir and we’re leading up to our 50th anniversary in 2014.

We are currently rehearsing for the BBC Choir of the Year competition, the first round of which is taking place in The Anvil on Saturday 4th February. We are currently in real need of Top Sopranos, so if you need a new hobby and have a high singing voice, our choir is the place for you. We rehearse at The Carnival Hall, Council Road, Basingstoke on Monday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. for further details, please ring our Membership Secretary, Jan Hodges, on 01256 781035. You can be sure of a very warm welcome!

BASINGSTOKE MALE VOICE CHOIR - 2012

Gentlemen, try something new this year! If you’ve enjoyed the recent programmes about choirs with Gareth Malone, come along and join a choir yourself. The benefits are enormous. Further information can be found on our website www.basingstokemvc.org.uk or you can

chat to Tony Brown, on 01256 336984.

This year the choir will be welcoming back the prize-winning Farnham Youth Choir at their forthcoming St George’s Day Concert on 21st April in St Michael’s Church. This will be followed by their Annual Concert on 26th May in the United Reformed church – their guests being the Taunton Male Voice Choir. 8th July sees the choir joining with other local choirs and choral societies in the Basingstoke Festival of Choirs’ Jubilee Celebration Concert in The Anvil.

BMVC will also be taking part in a male voice choir choral festival at the Fairfield Hall, Croydon, and in the autumn the choir travels to Ely Cathedral helping the Huntingdon MVC celebrate their 50th Anniversary. With such a busy programme the choir is always keen to recruit new choristers and will be running an open evening on 5th March at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church, London Street. We hope to see you on March 5
