THE LIVESAYS OF GREENBRIER COUNTY W. VIRGINIA

This article cannot rightfully be called a history of the Livesay Family since a history is made up of accurate facts obtained by 3mgg years of research and study. These pages therefore might better be called a record of the Livesays who originated from the Greenbrier County area.

You will note that this record is incomplete, and will have to be revised from time to time as more information is obtained. We would like to gain a knowledge of their forebears and locate their descendants. The former has presented a baffling problem. The early settlers did not seem to use middle names, in the first place, and they showed more interest in taming the wilderness and making provision for the future, than in keepin i records of the past, moreover some of the records which were ke£t have been aistroyed.

DELVING INTO THE MASS OF Old Documents available it was discovered that there were in early Virginia, several groups of Livesays who seem to be related but whose degree of relationship is not known at this time.

When the English settlers landed on the coast of Virginia and North Carolina, our ancestors were apparently called Livesay or Livesley interchangeable. In England at the same period we find the name Livesay as at present. The various Virginia lines became Livesay, thoug descend¬ ants of the eastern -Pennsylvania settlers use the name Livezey. The/K common spelling found in the records in Greenbrier County is Levisay. Spelling as a fixed art is quite modern. In the early records it is not unusual to find the same man^ name more than one way in the same official document.

Scotch-Irish and German settlers migrated from Pennsylvania to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia between 1732 and 1745 because of rligieas Oppgecciog, it is most likely some English were also in this group. Not long after they established homes in what now comprise the counties of Augusta, Rockingham, Page and others, the younger spirits among them ventured farther westward. These Counties are the first location of the Livesays of the Greenbrier Area. As early as 1750 and by 1761 at least 100 persons had crossed the& Alleghany Mountains. n They were determined to live in Greenbrier in spite of the danger from the Xing's men and the Indians".

Greenbrier was named from the abundance of green briers Ining the banks of the Greenbrier River. It is the third oldest county in lest Virginia. The Act providing for the formation of the counties ofGreenbrie' , Rockbridge and Rockingham was passed by the General Assembly of Virginia in October 1777, however it did not become a law until March I, 1778. Greenbrier was carved from Botetout and Montgomery Counties and embrace a territory of what is now in whole or part of the following counties in Virginia, Alleghany, Bath, In West Virginia counties of Braxton, Calhoun, Clay, Fayette,Gilmer, Jackson, I>nawha, Mason, Monroe, Nicholas, Pocohonta Putman, Roane, Summers, Webster, Y.'irt and Wood JHfho Western part- of

-tae-Union so was -called -Greenbrier. Tjjis—part refused- foraed the State of Pest Virginia- -in I863-. Greenbrier County of today is made up of the foothills of the Al&g&hapy Mountains with beautiful scenery as one looks over the hills of Blue Grass and in the fall of the beautiful autumn colors. The chief industry / being stock raising, saw mills, blacksmith, grist mill and general farming Lewisburg is the County Seat and the largest city.

A News paper clipping of unknown author or date, but evidently some one who roomed with the Livesays. This must have been the second wife as the date mentioned is not that of the First wife. The date of death of the second wife has not yet been learnt.

I cannot avoid giving expression to the feeling of sadness and sorrow on account of the announcement of the death of Mrs.Elizabeth Livesay, wife of William R. Livesay of the Richlands, in this county, on the 26th ult. I regarded her as a particular friend. For tnree years and a half I boarded at the elegant home of her and her generous husband, and had the opportunity of knowing her intimately, and of sharing the large hearted hospitality which she dispensed with more than common prefusion and courtesy. Truly, kindness was a prominent characteristic of her nature; and she extended it unremittingly to all who were fortunate to belong in ary- way to her ovi/n household; and she did not stop there, but to all over whom she had any care, whether neighbor, friend or stranger, all shared her sympathy and kindness when any sort of necessity required assistance.
