The Trotter family is one of great antiquity, long settled inEngland in the County of Durham. The surname is Saxon and originatesfrom Robert Trotar, who is mentioned in the DoomsdayBook as holdinga house at the royal city of Jinchester at a rent of five poundsannually from King Edwardthe Confeesor. The earliest county recordsshow the present family to h ve been seated at Byers Green. The Trotter family in America were immigrants from Scotland,and according to one of the amily, They are descended from the Earl ofsnazzy Gourywhose name is prominent in Scottish History at the time ofJames V1. Being opposed to the King gnd Catholicism, they left theirhomes and took refuge in Molerne, Ireland, where some of the descendantsare amoungthe gentry of the countyy today.

{Thorare several crests given for the Trotter family, the mostof which refer to a trotting horse. The description of two of these asshownin “Fsirburn's Crests“ are as follows;

The first Trotter in Americawas dilliam Trotter of Newburry,Mass, whomarried Catharine ( or Catbury) Gibbs. Dec. 9. 1652. In1666, they removed to Elizabeth Town, NewJersey, where they died.They had the following children:

His wife, Nancy, Born 2-22-l7h8Died 5-El-l8R5 is buried in the whestville Cemetery near Camden,Prebls Go., Ohio. she having removed to Camdenwith her dau.Nancyflitchsll. Joseph Trotter died in Bourbon C0,. Ky., wherehis will is rscorddd at Paris and proved Apr. 3, 1809. It isas follows:

After removing toFayette Co., Ky., in 1784, he led the Kentuchyians atHarmon's defeat in 1790 thus earning the title of Colonel,Hewas representative to the State Legislature in 1792 to1822. He pursued the mercantile business in Lexington withhis sons, Samuel and George. He retired from the businessand died at his home " The Woodlands‘, near Lexington, whichbecame the grounds for the Chautauqua Assembly of Kentucky.His will is eecorded in Fayette Go. as follows:
