The Trotter family is one of great antiquity, long settled inEngland in the County of Durham. The surname is Saxon and originatesfrom Robert Trotar, who is mentioned in the DoomsdayBook as holdinga house at the royal city of Jinchester at a rent of five poundsannually from King Edwardthe Confeesor. The earliest county recordsshow the present family to h ve been seated at Byers Green. Thelineage begins with Robert Trotter ofi Byers Hall whowas a Tenantin- Chlefl to the Kinge he 7&5a Saxon and married a Olakton.( Genalogist, new aories,X1- 129.) The Trotter family in America were immigrants from Scotland,and according to one of the amily, They are descended from the Earl ofsnazzy Gourywhose name is prominent in Scottish History at the time ofJames V1. Being opposed to the King gnd Catholicism, they left theirhomes and took refuge in Molerne, Ireland, where some of the descendantsare amoungthe gentry of the countyy today.
{Thorare several crests given for the Trotter family, the mostof which refer to a trotting horse. The description of two of these asshownin “Fsirburn's Crests“ are as follows;

The first Trotter in Americawas dilliam Trotter of Newburry,Mass, whomarried Catharine ( or Catbury) Gibbs. Dec. 9. 1652. In1666, they removed to Elizabeth Town, NewJersey, where they died.They had the following children:

Joseph Trotter 111- was in the Revolutionary war servingin 1781 under Captain Francis Long. He was granted a licensefor retailing flerchndise in Augusta Go..Vs. on May15, 178 andthan he later removed his store to Bourbon Co.. Ky. in 179where he also owned much land. His wife, Nancy, Born 2-22-l7h8Died 5-El-l8R5 is buried in the whestville Cemetery near Camden,Prebls Go., Ohio. she having removed to Camdenwith her dau.Nancyflitchsll. Joseph Trotter died in Bourbon C0,. Ky., wherehis will is rscorddd at Paris and proved Apr. 3, 1809. It isas follows:

William Trotter 1124 lived in Scott Co., Ky. where hediéd, his will being dated June 26, 1797 and proven Oct.23-1797. It is as follows:
" In the name of God, A men. I, William Trotter, of theCounty of Scott and State of Kentucky do hereby make andordain this to be myLast Will and Testament. First , I dorecommend my soul to God which gave it and my body to beburied in a decent manner at the descretion of my E xecutorst is mywill and that it be divided in manner and.form followingto4will: To mybeloved wife Margaret the plantation Inowlive on during her natural life for a support to herand to raise my children to—wit:~Joseph, Polly, Williamand David Stephenson to clothe and educate them and alsoI do allow to her my said wife two-thirds of what moveablesproperty I may be possessed of at my decease after paymentand the residue of myestate to be equally divided mytwo childred above named. Five pounds out of the amountof my said estate-—-— to my son James and he is not toreceive any other advantage or benefit from myestate,real or personal, in any manner whatever excepy 100 acresout of a tract which was surveyed in the name of MajorDavid Stephenson and patented in mine containing 1200acres. To my son Joseph,I do give all mypart ofa survey made inthe manner of said Major David Stephensonlying on the water of Point Lick, a branch of Scota Rmver,except 100 acres which is to be conveyed to John Alexanderand 100 acres to Samuel Hind agreeable to my obligationto them and my said Executors are required to make conveyance accordingly for the whdid when title shall be gotfor the same from said Stephenson. Also, I do give to mysaid son Joseph 200 acres to be laid out of the tract ofl2OO acres lying below Green River above mentioned andto be his heirs forever. I do give unto my son William500 acres to be laid out of said 1200 acre tract and hisheirs forever. James Trotter ll3~ enlisted in 1778 in Captain DavidBell's Company, Col. SampsonMatthew's Regiment in theAugustg Co. Va., Revolutionary Troops. After removing toFayette Co., Ky., in 1784, he led the Kentuchyians atHarmon's defeat in 1790 thus earning the title of Colonel,Hewas representative to the State Legislature in 1792 to1822. He pursued the mercantile business in Lexington withhis sons, Samuel and George. He retired from the businessand died at his home " The Woodlands‘, near Lexington, whichbecame the grounds for the Chautauqua Assembly of Kentucky.His will is eecorded in Fayette Go. as follows:
" In the name of God, fimen. 1, James Trotter, of theCounty of Fayette, State of Kentucky, being weak in body butof sound mind and memory, knowing the uncertainty of humanlife and wishing to say wgen I shall be gone hence, whatshall be done with myearthly estate, do by these presentsmakeand constitute this mylast will and testament, herebyrevoking all former wills by meheretofore made. First,it is mywill that myfuneral expenses and Just debts bepaid.
