Simon Winchester, New York Times bestsell-ing author of “The Professor” and “The Madman”, examines the legendary annihilation in 1883 of the volcano-island of Krakatoa, which was followed by an immense tsunami that killed nearly forty thou-sand people. The effects of the immense waves were felt as far away as France. Barometers in Bogotá and Washington, D.C., went haywire. Bodies were washed up in Zanzibar. The sound of the island’s destruction was heard in Australia and India and on islands thousands of miles away.

Downton Abbey is a British drama series that follows the lives of the Crawley family and its servants in the family’s classic Georgian country house. The series begins with the 1912 sinking of the Titanic, which leaves Downton Abbey’s future in jeopardy, since the presumptive heirs of Robert, Earl of Grantham—his cousin James, and James’ son, Patrick—die in the catastrophe, leaving the family without a male offspring to take over Downton when the current lord dies. The point is important since Lord Grantham’s children are daughters—Ladies Mary, Edith, and Sybil, but the facets of their lives and of those of the below-stairs staff—also a highly regimented world—have fascinating story lines. Come to the Chapel on Monday, July 23, when Season 6, Episode 9—the final episode of this British drama series—will be shown at 6:30 p.m.

Ancient astronomers in Mediterranean countries came up with the phrase “dog days” for the hottest period of the summer, from about July 3 to August 11. The astronomers defined the dog days as extending from 20 days before to 20 days after the conjunction of Sirius (the dog star) and our sun. This conjunction happened to coincide with the worst days of summer, when folks were especially plagued by disease and discomfort. —www.familyeducation.com
