WELCOME to the Spring edition of The Little Local. This season, as we all warm up from the Central Highlands’ winter, is a great time to head out and take part in the myriad festivals and events that rock this region.

There’s the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival which says loudly “Spring is here” and kickstarts the season followed by the wonderful ARTOBER which includes the famous Daylesford Art Show in the Daylesford Town Hall on the Melbourne Cup long weekend.

The Swiss & Italian Festival is always a winner and those after more arty pursuits can head to the Daylesford Macedon Ranges Open Studios - there’s even buses if you don’t want to drive.

Meanwhile the Blackwood Festival of Music is a family friendly festival and features diverse music including Irish, bluegrass, country, blues and rockabilly.

And what visit to the region would be complete without a bit of wine-tasting maybe at the the Budburst Wine and Food Festival.

Finally pop a table tennis ball into a clown’s mouth and check out “best in show” at the Daylesford Agricultural Show.

More details on all of the above are on page 11 but also check out the Hepburn Shire and Macedon Ranges councils’ websites’ events pages for even more ideas.

And then there are all our stories on our locals and tree-changers, market guides, meal deals and places to head for great music. Enjoy your stay and enjoy your copy of the Spring edition of The Little Local!

SHAI Tabassi finds nothing “fascinating about fascinators”.And that’s no surprise.

The milliner has been creating beautiful couture hats for women around the world for the past 13 years. Real hats.

Shai, who moved to Daylesford with her husband Ahmad two years ago, said she had swapped a civil engineering career for a four-year millinery course in Kangan-Batman School of fashion in 2001.

But at the same time she also, through a collection for a celebrity designer client, got in touch with boutiques in Dubai, with the prestigious Dubai World Cup clientele in mind.

“I knew that in Dubai they didn’t have any local milliners so I got in touch with three boutiques and since 2001 have been selling hats for the Dubai World Cup. Meanwhile I finished my course and became an official milliner. I always have three to four projects at the one time, there are always ideas coming into my head. It’s my escape, my passion.”

DEEP in the tranquil Wombat State Forest the chanting of monks and nuns in saffron, red or brown filled the air. A $2.3m, 60-hectare Buddhist monastery was being opened.

From across Asia, 500 followers came to take part, from countries such as Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia. Monks and nuns from a strand of Buddhism that bars holding money or cooking. Meals are provided by followers, who may also come to meditate, or in the case of one monk, by walking for 75 minutes to Trentham.

Few forest monasteries worldwide follow the strands of Buddhism practised here in Beaches Lane, Newbury. A monastery spokesman, the Venerable Jaganatha, known as Jag, said the forest tradition died out about 1000 years ago and is one of the three major streams of Buddhism not connected to the Dalai Lama.

WHEN the world was learning that a gigantic fish that looked like it came from the age of dinosaurs had been pulled from the sea, Daylesford’s Andy Greenwood brimmed over with excitement as he sprang into action.

The Portland trawler men who accidentally caught the rare 6.3 metre basking shark smartly put a call from their boat to Museum Victoria, where Andy has the catch-all title of head of Production and Technical Services. Barry, Andy’s personal nickname for the fish, was dead, so the call meant that processes could be started to acquire the specimen for the museum collection and capture significant data about it for scientists and museums throughout the world.

Exceeded in length only by whale sharks, fish like Barry can reach twice his size and are known for their gentle nature. They can dive to 1000 metres and stay there for months. Photo: Museum Victoria.

ARMOURER Sam Bloomfield grew up in The Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand before going to art school in Wellington where he majored in sculpture. That furthered his interest in metalworking and Sam eventually headed to Australia to continue his journey.

“During my time at art school in New Zealand I met Stuart Johnson, master armourer for The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. I was very fortunate, Stu mentored me for about 18 months as there were no formal apprenticeships at that time. The form and movement of armour fascinated me. It’s essentially a symbolic extension of its wearer. Although I was trained in the reproduction of historical pieces my true passion is in applying those skills, along with blacksmithing and leatherworking, to the creation of medieval-inspired sculptural works. I would call myself a metal sculptor rather than a traditional armourer.” Image: Elke Meitzel

WHEN Don Breen, pictured opposite, started his career tinkering around with radios and televisions, he never dreamt he would one day travel the world with Mr Clock.

From communications projects in his early 20s, Don’s career soon morphed to medicine, or more correctly, medical technology. He also had an interest in mechanical engineering along with “various levels of qualifications - which gave me enough of an understanding of physics subjects to be dangerous”.

Workplaces included The Baker Institute, his own business and then Hewlett-Packard who headhunted him to open its medical division when they opened in Australia in 1967.

One of his many memories of the firm is its atomic clock and his time accompanying it around the world to check on time keeping machines - this time on commercial flights.

“The atomic clock is a highly accurate time-keeping standard which is precise to a miniscule fraction of time and holds its time for an amazingly accurate number of digits over years.

“The clock went on tour and it was a very neat machine, about the size of two Eskies. It sat silently in a first class seat with a seat belt around it. It had its own ticket in the name of Mr Clock! Imagine trying to achieve this today with airport security the way it is.

“And Mr Clock had to be accompanied by someone and that was yours truly. We had taken the real time from the US time standard in Washington and then took Mr Clock around the world to check on other clocks which maintain their time standards. Vital in areas of astronomy and digital communication and the like.”

Don and wife Sandy moved to Daylesford in 2009 and celebrate their 47th wedding anniversary this October.

THERE are some houses you walk into and they just have a good feeling.

And that’s how artists Roberta Donnelly and Brian Nash came to live in Daylesford and start their bed and breakfast, Impressions of Daylesford. That was despite the house having little aesthetic appeal – with concrete walls, no kitchen to speak of – just a sink, no floorboards in the upstairs bathrooms and blocked up fireplaces.

But the couple, when they first saw the home in January 2000, just thought “we can do something here”. And for many that renovation would be enough. But one night, when everything was settled, Brian said “I think I’ll do a painting” and started drawing on the former stable wall.

His work included a nod to his favourite artist painter Edgar Degas, known for his ballerinas and upstairs in the guests’ bathrooms are magnificent but tasteful nudes – which get plenty of comments.

CERAMICIST Marina Pribaz moved to Daylesford from Melbourne in 2000. She remembers waking up feeling cold, looking out the window to a thick layer of snow everywhere and feeling so happy to be here.

Marina has been interested in art since she was a child and did Fine Arts at RMIT where she completed an honours degree in painting.

“When I moved to Daylesford I enquired at the University of Ballarat about learning how to make ceramic tiles. I thought I would just make tiles to decorate my home and then return to painting, but somehow ceramics got under my skin and I found a vast, rich culture of making that continues to surprise and engage me and one that I continue to learn from. At present I make work which is slipcast or hand-built or both. Hand-building is very grounding and connects me to mother earth in a very physical, tangible way.”

LIFE-SIZED kangaroo sculptures have been transformed into unique artworks with the “Hop for Hope” collaboration between the Alannah and Madeline Foundation and the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery.

The project will raise funds to keep children safe from violence. The kangaroos are being transformed by leading Australian artists

together with entrepreneurs, media personalities and sports stars.Among those on the list is Trentham artist David Bryant, pictured,

who also invited other local artists to add their own special touches - think Rose Wilson, Louise Otten, Peter Young and Mel Thomas.

The 40 finished kangaroos will be exhibited throughout September and October in the grounds of the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery. They are also up for auction. Kangaroo anyone?

A secret you might like!OUTSIDE the entrance to a farm field in Yandoit is a stone fence

with a metal divining rod sitting on top. Walk through the gate and down the path and you will come upon a circle defined by large stones. Hold the metal divining rod gently in your hand and you will feel it pull to different directions. The owner of the field is a dairy farmer, member of the British Society of Dowsers and a water diviner for 60 years. He believes there is an “energy line”, which improves health, running through his property and for miles either side. But that’s all we can say, it’s a little local secret.

CYNDI Boste has loved music as long as she can remember and started performing when she was just 15 in cafes. She then performed every week on The Early Bird Show on Channel 10 and then worked the covers scene in Melbourne and all over Victoria.

At 38, in 1999, she released her first solo album of original material entitled Home Truths to much critical acclaim.

“I have released five albums to date with another due in 2016. I have had songs covered by artists such as Kasey Chambers, Beccy Cole, Vika and Linda Bull, and Kerri Simpson.”

IF YOU are reading the New York Times, Frankie, Yen or Rolling Stone magazines, or perhaps come across Lake House photographic shoots, chances are you have seen the work of Mia Mala McDonald.

But chances also are you don’t realise the 32-year-old shooting star of the photography world was born in Daylesford Hospital, went to Yandoit Primary and graduated from the then Daylesford Technical School.

Even as a teenager Mia was probably not your average 14-year-old.“I would go to gigs and shoot all the bands because I really sucked

at playing music. And that’s where my photography started. I was shooting for street press and then applied for a photography degree at RMIT and started being really interested in portraiture. Next stop was an internship in America and then it was straight into freelance work.”

RUNNING a multi-million dollar family empire in Brunswick, and living with horses on a Daylesford farm, sound like two separate lives; but for the Hardwicks, they are a perfect fit.

During the week, Rebekah and Sebastian run separate businesses – a high-end wedding dress boutique in Sydney Road, Melbourne, with couture gowns starting from $6000, and Daylesford-based construction company Hardwick Build Co.

The couple met at work; Rebekah was full-time as a receptionist at Mariana Hardwick on a year off from university… and Sebastian was the son of business founder, Mariana.

Years of strong mentoring by Mariana – interrupted only by a wedding which of course included the most stunning gown of all – left Rebekah more than capable, and willing, to step up and take over the business once mother-in-law Mariana started talking about retirement. Photo: Zoe Phillips

Groovy musicTHERE are plenty of cool places to kick

back and listen to some tunes in the Central Highlands. You have probably already found some. Here are a few more ideas!

The Perfect Drop in Daylesford offers great live jazz and folk music in the bar. If you’re around on a Monday pop in for SIN - the service industry night - it’s a great way to meet the locals.

The Old Hepburn Hotel is host to local musicians and some of Australia’s premier artists and select international acts. There’s performance afternoons, pop-up events, dancing and new album launches.

Entertainment and music have been the cornerstone of the revival of The Blackwood Hotel. Throughout winter the pub has sourced some quality artists including Harry J Nanos, Paige and Wilkinson & Shaw.

Live music and events are becoming a regular weekend fixture at The Tavern@Daylesford Cider Company showcasing much of the local music scene with its toe-tappin’, folk, country and bluegrass rhythms.

Music at the Radio Springs Hotel in Lyonville starts on Thursday nights and continues through to Sunday afternoons. There’s a mix of blues, country, covers and everything in between.

Every Friday at The Grande Hotel in Hepburn Springs there’s a musical event on offer. From cabaret to burlesque, from tribute shows to amazing tunes, there is something for everyone.

DENVER resident Rizwana Karim has a passion and is changing the lives of children, and soon young adults and adults, in Bangladesh.

Rizwana owns the Rahela Salahuddin Welfare Centre in Dhamrai - named in memory of her late parents, Hajiani Rahela Khatun and Haji Muhammad Salahuddin, who owned the property.

It offers educational services to the community with primary school-aged children receiving free tutoring and classes in addition to their regular schooling. To help raise money for the centre Rizwana holds Bangladeshi cooking classes and dinners around the region.

“I like cooking and Bangladeshi food is very nice. It’s very different from Indian, the idea is not to overpower the taste of the main food with spices, the spices are there to give you the flavour. All my recipes are authentic Bangladeshi with a touch of my own style.”
