Charity Golf DayAt The Royal Melbourne Golf Club

29th December 2013With just three months to go, preparations for our BIG day are well under way.

Your golf committee must be doing something right as they have been successful in obtaining new sponsors namely Quest apartments and the Kingston Council as well as retaining all of last year’s.

We are now looking for Hole sponsors where for $200 they can have an advertising sign placed on the tee of their choice. From there they can distribute material to promote their products.

Whilst we already have had many enquiries from golfers wishing to enter, we have produced a promotion poster which will be distributed, together with our entry form, to loyal supporters, clubs, businesses and friends.

For the first time we are offering an alternative way of entering by inviting players to register online.

This year we will have separate competitions for Golf Link Handicap players and non -handicap players: the latter to be played under the Callaway system.

We are again using shotgun starts at 7:30am & 12:30pm allowing us to have a later start, earlier finish plus a larger field. This method is widely used at charity and corporate golf days and has the support of Royal Melbourne staff.

We will have the usual refreshment available on course, a BBQ operated by Clarinda Lions, plus putting and hopefully a ‘hole-in – one’ competitions . And of course we will have our bookies challenging the golfers with Lion Jack Hellyer laying the odds.

Our next task is to obtain donations of goods &/or services both large and small to auction. Every member is requested to put on their thinking caps and find at least one item that in turn will make this activity a success.

Non-playing guests are welcome in the clubhouse for post event presentations, fellowship and fun with plenty of competitions, prizes, auctions and more. – Lion Geoff Thomas

ANNUAL BOOK & GARAGE SALESat. 19th Oct & Sun. 20th Oct.

between 9am-3pm“Lions Den” at the Kingston Centre

Set-up is on Friday 18th October and it would be much appreciated if any member could be at our Den at 1:45pm to assist with setting up the White Elephant & Bric-a-Brac section. If members have any donation of goods please let Lion Marilyn know to arrange to have them picked up.

Pres. Bill Tomkinson and wife Susie recently accompanied a group of 62 children attending Licola Camp # 268. Comprising two bus loads from Melbourne and Dandenong they also picked up more children at Warrigal, Moe, Traralgon and Heyfield, before making the 50 Km steep, windy trip up to Lions Camp Licola. “Good weather on the first three days enabled a full range of activities, but wet weather over Wednesday night, and all day Thursday meant only indoor activities could be held” Lion Bill said. “The kids performed a concert on Thursday night and were very entertaining, perhaps thanks to extra time rehearsing due to the rain.”

The children were assisted by 15 adult Volunteer Group Leaders (including Billy and Susie T) most of whom were happy to go home and rest up after a hectic week. “However to see most of the children from disadvantaged homes have a week like no other, was brilliant and very rewarding.”

“Unfortunately we did not sponsor a child at this camp, not for want of trying. Maybe over January. Will we do it again........You Betcha!”
