COURSE REGISTRATION FOR 2017-18

Students will begin the process of selecting courses for the 2017-18 school year in late

January–early February. All course selections made during the registration process are made

via PowerSchool. Students in grades 9, 10 and 11, will receive course registration information

during Homeroom on Thursday, January 26. Online registration for these grade-levels will

take place from Thursday, January 26, through Friday, February 10. 8th grade students

will receive course registration materials at Oak Ridge or Excelsior middle schools. Students

not currently enrolled at Linn-Mar should contact the Linn-Mar High School Main Office

(447-3040) in order to meet with a counselor and get registered for courses. Once online

registration is completed, the master schedule of courses is developed for the 2017-18 school

year. This schedule is primarily based upon student course requests during registration. Every

effort is made to fulfill student course requests. It is anticipated that student schedules will be

distributed to current grades 9, 10 and 11 in early May. Schedule changes can be made with

school counselors during the remainder of May.

Parents are encouraged to work closely with students during the course selection process.

An 8th Grade Parent Course Registration Planning Night will be held on Monday, February 6,

at 7:00 p.m. in the LMHS Auditorium. The meeting will conclude about 7:45 p.m. Information

presented at the meeting will include making appropriate course selections, scheduling, and

the four year planning process. Teachers from each department will also be available for

questions prior to the meeting beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the LMHS Learning Center. 8th

Grade online course registration will begin on Friday, February 3, and end on Friday,

February 10. 9th-10th Grades counselors will be visiting and available at both middle

schools prior to and during the online registration window for 8th Grade students.

The 2017-18 LMHS Program of Studies is available on the Linn-Mar High School Website.

Hard copies may be accessed in the 9th-10th Grades Office, 11th-12th Grades Office, Upper

Commons/Library, and Learning Center. Please see your counselor for any questions you

may have about online registration of courses.

Iowa BIG

For the 2017-18 school year, Linn-Mar

is officially partnering with the Cedar

Rapids and College Community school

districts in the Iowa BIG program. A second Iowa BIG

site will be developed on the north side of the metro

area, and Linn-Mar will have two teachers directly

involved in the program at that location.

Iowa BIG provides opportunities for students

to work on authentic community projects and receive

academic credit. Students in the program attend LMHS

for half of the school day, and Iowa BIG for the other

half of the school day. The program is currently

available for juniors and seniors. See your school

counselor for more information regarding Iowa BIG.

Planning for 2017-18 and Beyond

Along with Course Registration, many other preparations are taking place for 2017-18. During the past two

years, LMHS has used nine classrooms located at the LRC. In 2017-18, only the Child Development and Parenting

classroom will remain at the LRC. All other classrooms will relocate to the LMHS building. Parking for 2017-18

will remain the same with grades 11 and 12 having designated parking areas in the East and Stadium/Aquatic

Center parking lots. The parking lottery will again be held to determine who gets parking tags and lot preference.

Those eligible for a parking tag may purchase one following the August parking lottery for $25.00. Grade 9 has a

designated parking area on the gravel lot at Armstrong Field. Approximately twenty-five parking tags are issued

at no fee.

The LM School Board has voted to realign grade levels in the future. The realignment will create seven PK-4

elementary schools, two 5-7 middle schools, an 8-9 center, and a 10-12 LMHS. A bond referendum is currently

being planned for September to facilitate the realignment including significant upgrades to Bowman Woods,

Indian Creek and Wilkins Elementaries, the building of a 5-7 building, and the renovation of Excelsior to become

an 8-9 center. An exact timeline will not be established until the bond issue passes. A rough estimate on when the

realignment would take place would be approximately three years after the bond referendum passes.

The ‘Commons’ Concept

Beginning in 2016-17, LMHS has seven ‘commons’ learning spaces for students . Each of these spaces

have varied learning and media resources for students for individual and group study. These ‘commons’

spaces provide the infrastructure to better meet the needs of 21st Century learners in collaborative, resourceful,

purposeful, and engaging learning environments for online and college coursework, as well as for ‘blended’

learning opportunities. University library environments was a major inspiration in the design of the ‘commons’

areas. Each location is an academic environment during the school day, and students are expected to use each

of these areas in this manner. The areas are also versatile and can be used for a variety of other functions for

events and other activities outside of the school day.

The ‘commons’ learning space locations are: Pride Rock Commons, West/Theater Commons, South

Commons, Main Office/Study Commons, Upper Commons/Library, and The Commons at the Four Corners.

The Outdoor Commons and Vestibule, Lower Commons/Cafeteria, Food Court are also ‘commons’ learning

spaces with lunch served during Block 3/Periods 5-6.

LMHS Renovation Update

We have reached the end of the final

phase of the renovation. While punch list

items will continue to be completed for a

couple of months, the Presentation/Lecture

Hall, classroom, and door #16 area should

be finished on or before February 10. A

door lock/card swipe system has also been

installed and should be operable in early

February as well. Most construction trailers

and equipment have been removed.
