Thanks to the hard work of the Day Program staff, we have begun shifting the entire culture and understanding of what a job coach is to be. Lately there has been a lot more focus toward the awareness and progress of our clients’ goals; it’s become a more frequent consideration in the daily function of the front line... and this is just the beginning. Thank you to the staff and all of our clients for embracing the changes the Day Program has gone through to better serve the people we work for.

Cooking, youth, and fire, what do they all have in common? They are all projects the Residential Office has been working on the last few months.

We are excited to announce that the Outreach/Independence prep is roasting up a cooking class. The instructor who we are excited about is Nikita. She has a ton of experience in different kinds of kitchens. I am looking forward to the outcomes of this class.

We are starting to complete intake to be able to assist youth with hourly and overnight respite needs. This is something that we have been looking at for a long time. What a difference it will make for youth 14-17 to already know us when they turn 18. This will assist with making transitions to the adult world much smoother, as well as provide the families of youth with developmental disabilities the much needed breaks that they need.

Fire, we are working on getting the homes of our clients flagged in the City of Leduc Fire Department’s system. This way they will be able to better assist our clients in an emergency.

In case you haven’t heard… LINX

goes pink! Every year we have get involved with Pink Shirt Day to focus not only on what shouldn’t happen, but on what SHOULD happen. For this year’s art contest, we were lucky to have Councillor Laura Tillack, Cst. Morla, and LINX Board Member Susan Boyle judge on the criteria of positive, inclusion, clear message, artistic, and inspiring. The winner for 2018 is Bradley Semrau.

Finally, and as always, I would like to thank everyone for all of their support, and wish you a happy, healthy and safe St. Patrick’s Day month! ~ Nicole

This month I sat down with Kevin Wenzel and Maureen Hobden from City of Leduc transportation. The LATS

bus has been serving Leduc residents since 1989. They have 300 active clients as well as 850 registered clients

in the Leduc area.

Many clients had questions they wanted to ask. One being, “Why do we book through Edmonton and not

locally?” This was answered simply; the fact is the computerized system for bookings is expensive and they

don’t have enough funding to run a program like that here in Leduc.

My conversation with Kevin and Maureen was very informative. I learnt so much of the reasoning for the

hours of the buses and the amount of training each driver goes through. They work with the local Fire

department to run through scenarios that help the drivers to know what to do in case of emergency. When it

comes to the hours of the buses and shortened times on the weekends, lack of money in the budget is once

again the issue. They can only work with what they have.

Another question the clients had was, will the busses run to the new mall? There is no answer at this time.

When shown the map of the new mall and the roads going in, it is obvious that it could be quite time

consuming for a bus to go to the mall and still be able to serve the rest of Leduc.

Kevin and Maureen had some safety reminders for customers of LATS.

Ensure dressed appropriately for the weather

Stow bags under the seats

Ensure walkways are clear of snow and debris

Be respectful of fellow passengers and drivers

Parents! Clients! Employers! Staff! Neighbours! If you would like to be a part of or refer someone for “Through our Eyes”, please contact Nicole at 780-980-9423 ext 222 or [email protected].

There are so many people who make our world a better place. So, we have decided they needed individual recognition. Please help us celebrate our Citizen of the Month, Residential Staff of the month, Staff of the Month, and Employer of the month. If you see someone in any of these categories that you would like to see recognized, please let us know!

“I like this picture because you can

see the trees, snow, sky, and

buffalo. I edited this with more

lighting so you can see the animals

better”.

“This trip was fun, we got to see different animals such as Buffalo, Elk,

Birds, Deer, and even a Beaver Dam!”

~ Meagan

“I used a cartooner editing tool for

this picture. I enjoyed taking

pictures of the buffalo, although I’m

not too sure if they would make a

good pet”.

Dan Ackroyd, Tourettes and Aspergers – The actor revealed he was diagnosed with

Asperger in the 1980s after his wife insisted he got help. "One of my symptoms included my obsession with ghosts and law enforcement -- I carry around a police badge with me, for example," he said. "I became obsessed by Hans Holzer, the greatest ghost hunter ever. That’s when the idea of my film Ghostbusters was born." As for Tourette, the Trading Places star explained he knew about it since he was 12 years old. "I had physical tics, nervousness and made grunting noises and it affected how outgoing I was," he said. "I had therapy which really worked, and by 14 my symptoms eased." Having both syndromes under control, Aykroyd said he feels like he "got two or three cat lives left" and would like to spend the rest of his days with his family. https://www.upi.com/blog/2013/12/26/Dan-Aykroyd-reveals-struggles-with-Asperger-and-Tourettes/5161388075706/ https://www.disabled-world.com/disability/awareness/famous/

Wanda Pearson! Wanda has just recently

taken on a volunteer position at Planeview Manor, helping the staff maintain a clean environment for the residents. Way to go, Wanda!!!

Holly Veitch! In the time that Holly has been

with us she has been a consistent example of compassion toward our clients. With her “teach a man to fish” mentality, she holds a firm value in helping others develop skills to further their independence. Thank you for being all that you are, Holly!!!

Ricky’s All Day Grill! Despite the dips and hiccups of

the local economy, Ricky’s has been able to maintain a working relationship with LINX and one of our clients who works there. Thank you, Ricky’s, for the consistent support you provide!!!

Mekelle Hassen! Mekelle has worked with us for many

years. She has mostly been a respite home provider. She has been terrific. She has recently been filling in for the outreach program some and has decided that she may pick up some regular shifts. I am super excited to see what she can do for our Outreach gang!!!
