Independence Day is observed as a national festival allover the nation very recently. The taste of independenceis no doubt sweet after a prolonged period of foreign rule

on us. Now we are enjoying our sovereignty since last 60years and ruled by our own elected government. Thisdemocracy is achieved by toilsome struggle and invaluablesacrifices, thus it is high time to go for introspection. It isalright that we are politically independent but are wefinancially independent? It is a vital question alwayshaunting us since last six decades. Efforts are on in thisdirection and many an experimental -economicpackages were launched but unfortunately we are yet toget the desired result. Experiment on microfinance toeradicate poverty is also a similar effort. We are trying to

reach the un-reached and serve the un-served section ofthe society with extending financial help to them, who arehardly covered by formal financial institutions. BISWAhas taken a lead role in this field, initially in the state ofOrissa, with forming 13,626 self help groups all over thestate. Another illustrative aspect of it is that 99% of theseSHGs are women SHGs. In such a way BISWA is ontostrike a balance in the field of gender imbalance byempowering women folk. We are also facilitatingenterprising activities with this available fund at their hands.

By using these SHGs as units we are also trying to availthem the benefits of social development schemes. ThusBISWA is acting in its three pronged actions, microfinance, micro enterprise and social developments. It is ourpleasure to disclose that we are able to take stride beyondthe state and lodged our presence in ten other states besidesOrissa.

With a vision to create a socio-economic development of

the society BISWA spreaded its wings not only in Orissa

but also in many other states like Chattisgarh & West Bengal.

In Chattisgarh state recently BISWA, has started its TotalSanitation Campaign (TSC). The objective of this

program is to create awareness among the people about

potable drinking water & proper sanitation. This program

also intends to change the behaviors of people towards

    proper sanitation.

Initially BISWA in Chattisgarh focused in four districts

namely: Raipur, Durg, Mahasamud, & Janjgir -Champa.

In Nawagarh block of Janjgir-Champa district, the Water

& Sanitation program is running in two groups, Group-A & Group-B where in Group-A people will give training to

Group-B NGOs. The training for Training of Trainers (TOT),ANMs, Anganwadi Workers (AWWs), Village Preraks, Village

Level Water & Sanitation Members (VWSCs), Block Level

Water & Sanitation Members (BWSCs) is already completed.

While the block level Water & Sanitation Campaign members

are there to explicate the work & the village level Water &

Sanitation Campaign members will help them in the successful

implementation of this program in villages. The ANMs are trained

for creating awareness for proper sanitation.

BISWA, Chattisgarh is implementing Water & Sanitation Campaign through the Self Help Groups with a new & aninnovative approach for successful implementation of the program.

Recently, a training on Gram Swachhatta Aviyan for the Group-B

people is completed on 11thAugust, 2006. During this campaign more

than Slogans were the main attraction where in the walls of 25 villages

    painted with there slogans.

Not only the TSC program implemented in Chattisgarh state but the

Micro-Enterprise Development (MED) program is also running

successfully in the state. It was a common practice, where 58% of the

total population of Mahasamund District was migrating to other places

for job, but now the scenario has changed after the intervention ofBISWA by an immense decrease in the percentage of migrating population.
