Why do we use these sounds?

Because they the cover the frequency range of all of the spoken sounds of English

It is important to have good access across the frequency range

• High frequencies have the most consonant information which enables the understanding of the meaning of the speech

• Low to mid frequencies carry the suprasegmentals of speech eg intonation, stress, rhythm

Checking that your child has auditory access to these sounds is important• You can play games such as posting / throwing ….

• In pretend play, use the Ling 6 sounds symbolically such as ahhh for cuddling dolly, shhh for going to sleep, sss for playing with a toy snake etc.

• Do they detect (hear) all of the Ling sounds

• Can they discriminate (hear the difference) between the Ling sounds

• The next slides give you some tips
