Our MissionTo create and enhance opportunities for independence and self-sufficiency of people who are blind, Deaf-Blind, and blind with other disabilities.

SEATTLE LIGHTHOUSE FOR THE BLIND FOUNDATION | ANNUAL REpORT FY 2011 | 3

Why We Are HereToday, seven out of every ten adults who are blind are unemployed.

For people who are Deaf-Blind, the unemployment number climbs to over 80% and for people with multiple disabilities over 90%.

One-third of all blind adults live in poverty.

The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. is among the largest employers of blind people and the foremost employer of Deaf-Blind people in the United States.

While our manufacturing operations, wages, and benefits are self-funded we face a funding gap in providing the mission-related costs crucial to giving blind individuals the support and skills necessary to succeed.

]Jobs, independence, and empowerment. Each of those is a powerful word, and they guide us in our service to our employees and the community.

They inspire and inform every business decision of The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. They provide the framework for planning for the future and as we work to create jobs and meet our customers’ needs.

We have put this inspiration into words through our Strategic plan. In each Annual Report, we highlight the past years’ achievement and it is our privilege to share with you the successes of 2011.

Ours is a unique organization, serving two important bottom lines. One bottom line is to create the best possible results from our businesses. The second metric is to enhance the lives of individuals who are blind, Deaf-Blind, and blind with other disabilities.

To support our Strategic plan of creating and sustaining 500 livable wage jobs by the end of 2016, we track progress and successes in the following five key strategy areas: (listed on following page)

Building Our Core Manufacturing Capabilities: In 2011, we finalized plans for additional plastic injection molding capability which will expand the kinds of products we can provide to aerospace customers. We added Okuma milling machines and continued to work with our customer base to determine new products we can manufacture. We engaged with other blindness-related organizations on the West coast to explore with them how we could apply our capabilities to create additional employment and empowerment. This work in 2011 achieved exciting results that we will be announcing details about in 2012 and beyond.

Develop Service Businesses: We successfully completed our first Navy task order providing contract Management Services (cMS) and were awarded another. cMS has created new jobs for blind individuals in San Diego. We also continued to explore opportunities to provide customer service through our contact center – another area where we have secured new business.

Physical and Geographic Expansion: The demand for office products resulted in increasing the number of employees at our Inland Northwest Lighthouse (INL) in Spokane. We also continued to set the stage for future growth at our Base Supply centers (BScs), building on our growth in previous years. This planning and research to open new BScs through dedicated focus by our staff and volunteers is leading to tremendous future growth.

Expand Accommodations and Training Opportunities: To further underscore The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc.’s commitment to accommodations, our Board of Trustees approved an Accessibility policy in Spring 2011. We created two new positions under the guidance of this policy: an Accessibility Manager to provide specific oversight to assessing employees’ work areas and needs; and an Employee Support Services Manager to manage the supports necessary for the Lighthouse to continue to be a thriving work environment.

Expand Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation: We added new members to our Foundation Board, held successful special events including the inaugural Spokane Braille Rally, and received generous support from new supporters and major donors.

It takes all these elements to make the Lighthouse work – literally. Our employees would not have these opportunities without the focus on our strategic goals. We are proud of our team, proud of our employees, and so thankful for the volunteers, customers, board members, and community partners who have joined with us in working toward these goals. It shows how powerful a plan can be when it serves a compelling need by harnessing the good work of a diverse array of Lighthouse stakeholders.

You are part of this good work as a member of our community focused on making people’s lives better. Thank you for that — and thank you for a wonderful year that has served as another step in the Lighthouse’s work toward its mission.

Creating and Enhancing OpportunitiesEach year, our top priority focuses on creating more quality jobs for people with visual disabilities. We are committed to expanding jobs, increasing opportunities for upward mobility, and promoting more choices for blind and Deaf-Blind people in our community and beyond. The AbilityOne Program is a federal initiative to help people who are blind or have other severe disabilities find employment by working for nonprofit agencies (NPAs) that sell products and/or services to the U.S. government. With a national network of 600 NPAs, AbilityOne is the largest source of employment for people who are blind or have other severe disabilities in the United States.

In 2011, we employed a total of 225 people who are blind, Deaf-Blind, and blind with other disabilities.

Today, blind and Deaf-Blind individuals work in jobs at every level of the organization including manufacturing, machining, information technology (IT), accounting, communications, human resources (HR), administration, teaching, management, and executive team. We will continue to strive to grow jobs steadily in the years ahead throughout The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc.

ManufacturingFor more than 90 years, The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. has continually provided opportunities for independence and self-sufficiency for people in the greater Seattle area who are blind. Nearly 60 years ago, we began our machine shop operation, having been a continual contractor with The Boeing company since 1951.

Today, The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. is an ISO9001:2000 and AS9100 accredited manufacturer that employs more than 70 machinists who are blind and Deaf-Blind. A participant in the AbilityOne program, we are associated with the National Industries for the Blind. Our list of customers includes various Federal government organizations such as the Department of Defense, and commercial firms including The Boeing company, Triumph composite Systems, Inc., and BAE Systems.

In FY 2011 we purchased new high-tech equipment that takes us to the next level in the manufacturing world. We purchased four Okuma Mills, a robotic cell for the manufacturing of the entrenching tool (E-Tool), and two new wallboard machines at our Spokane facility. By increasing our capabilities we are able to expand into new directions for product development.

Service BusinessesThe Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. offers a variety of services to our commercial, federal, and military customers.

The Lighthouse operates a contract Management Support (cMS) service for Fleet and Industrial Supply center (FISc) in downtown San Diego. cMS provides contract closeout support services to Federal Government contracting offices, like FISc, and new employment opportunities for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. cMS services help mitigate the critical government shortage of contract specialists by focusing on providing post-contract award administration support services that are not inherently governmental functions.

The AbilityOne program is providing critical support to government contracting offices by freeing up time for the contracting workforce to address more mission-critical and inherently-governmental functions, while at the same time facilitating the return of unused obligated contract funds to the government. With low attrition, deep tenure, and exceptional customer service capabilities, our contract Management Support team consists of seven highly skilled individuals that close out contracts everyday.

The Lighthouse also operates inbound and outbound contact center Services for various clients, such as 5-Star Solutions (a quality assurance company), as well as Base Supply centers who hold many retail store events on base. contact center Services help drive event awareness, provide valuable customer feedback to their parent companies, support customer relations, and enhance customer loyalty which drives additional revenues.

In alignment with the Lighthouse’s Strategic plan, cMS and contact center Services create high-growth career opportunities for blind and visually impaired individuals, while providing training and increasing job skills. These programs allow the Lighthouse to continue pursuing new service business opportunities and provide increased employment opportunities, moving us closer to our strategic goal of 500 livable wage jobs by 2016.

“Our staff really feel like they’re fulfilling the mission of the base, as well as the

mission of the Lighthouse.”

Karen Kidd, Vice President Base Supply Centers

Base Supply Centers (BSCs)

2011 was a flagship year in the Base Supply center (BSc) program, which celebrated its 15th year of existence nation-wide. The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. has participated in this program for 11 years, and in the fall we opened our new BSc at Naval Air Weapons Station in china Lake, cA. The addition of this store brings our total to six across the West coast.

Since the launch of the first BSc in 1995, government customers have appreciated convenient access to thousands of high-quality, competitively priced SKILcRAFT® and other name brand products as well as Hazmat, Individual Equipment Element (IEE), and other services.

In purchasing from BScs, government customers support the employment of qualified professionals who are blind or have other severe disabilities through the AbilityOne program. These employees produce and ship products, provide services, and in many cases, staff the BScs. Additionally, service-disabled veterans and military dependents have the opportunity to join the AbilityOne team, where they continue to play a valuable role in the military communities that are significant to their lives.

Inland Northwest Lighthouse (INL)

In 2011, we continued to create and enhance opportunities for people who are blind in the Spokane area at Inland Northwest Lighthouse (INL). Our employee count grew to a staff of over 50 dedicated individuals who machine aerospace parts, Quartet©/SKILcRAFT® co-branded wallboards, dry-erase easels, hanging file folders, paper trimmers, and spring-back binders. We added two new wallboard machines to the production floor, which will increase our production capacity and help us grow our very popular product line.

Most notable among our accomplishments in 2011 was the launch of the Spokane Braille Rally, a new annual event that features a contest where sighted drivers are paired with navigators who are blind or visually impaired. We continued training employees on the latest assistive technologies such as screen-readers, screen-magnifiers, and other devices that will help them to succeed in their jobs. We also offered Orientation & Mobility (O&M) instruction to our employees, furthering our dedication and commitment to increased accessibility for everyone.

Deaf-Blind ProgramThe Lighthouse’s nationally recognized Deaf-Blind program has provided employment, services, and support to Deaf-Blind individuals in our community for over thirty years.

Seattle Lighthouse’s Deaf-Blind community classes provide a free and accessible forum for Deaf-Blind individuals from the Lighthouse and the community to learn, socialize, and access information unavailable in their everyday lives. Students connect with each other, learn leadership and presentation skills, explore a wide range of subjects, and help American Sign Language interpreters develop Deaf-Blind interpreting skills. Over 70 members of the Deaf-Blind community participate in community classes each year.

The Lighthouse’s Deaf-Blind Technology Training center (TTc) serves the Deaf-Blind community by building skills through the use of computers and assistive technology. Designed specifically to address a glaring need for access to current information and technology within the Deaf-Blind community, the TTc program offers training on assistive technologies for both work and independent living. Lighthouse instructors provide individualized training to Deaf-Blind participants to support personal independence, opportunities for upward mobility in the workplace, and increased technological literacy.

For the 33rd year, the Lighthouse hosted an accessible, week-long retreat designed expressly for Deaf-Blind adults. Over 80 Deaf-Blind individuals attended our annual Deaf-Blind Retreat in 2011, supported by over 120 sign language interpreting volunteers. While ordinary daily life presents barriers for Deaf-Blind individuals, the retreat offers a welcoming community of peers and friends who truly understand the experience of living with a dual disability. The retreat is an essential part of the Lighthouse’s mission to serve the needs of people with visual disabilities, providing a week full of access, inspiration, and connection for Deaf-Blind individuals.

Braille Training ProgramEntering its fourth year, Seattle Lighthouse’s Braille Training program continued to expand throughout the year, providing braille literacy instruction to employees who are blind or visually impaired, Deaf-Blind, or sighted. The Braille Reading Library continues to provide current books and periodicals in braille, encouraging expanded use of braille among Lighthouse employees. The Braille Blazers Reading club continued meeting bi-weekly in 2011, with each member’s braille reading speed increasing throughout the year. Through the Braille Training program, the Lighthouse furthers its commitment to increase braille literacy and use amongst employees, seeking to decrease the 90% braille illiteracy rate among blind adults in the United States.

Other Employee SupportsThe Lighthouse also provides an in-house American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting department to ensure effective communication for Deaf-Blind employees and over 100 computer workstations adapted for use by visually impaired employees. The Lighthouse continues to provide outreach and educational programs for the community at large, including a local school tour program to educate elementary school students about blindness and Deaf-Blindness.

In March of last year, The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. Board of Trustees approved our new Accessibility and Training policy, reinforcing accessibility as a top priority at all Lighthouse locations. The policy clarifies the Lighthouse’s commitment to promote, facilitate, and encourage innovative accessibility and training initiatives throughout the organization, a commitment crucial to supporting and implementing initiatives which align with the strategic goals and mission of the Lighthouse. peggy Martinez, the Lighthouse’s Accessibility Manger, responds to employee’s challenges as they take on a new position or as their vision changes over time. peggy assesses an individual’s needs and brings the expertise of the organization to find a solution through assistive technology and training.

The Lighthouse has a Support Services program that began in September to supply services to employees in whatever area seems feasible and is necessary. Initiatives have included supporting the English as a Second Language training program at the Lighthouse, the development of a concentrated blindness awareness training program, providing monthly informational speakers on a variety of topics interesting to employees, and the creation of a sharing group for persons adjusting to being newly blind.

Linda Elliott, Production Manager“The Lighthouse mission is my passion,” says Injection Mold Shop and production Manager Linda Elliott. “For the last 28 years I’ve lived the mission. I’m a person who is legally blind, who has been provided opportunities to further my independence and self-sufficiency here at the Lighthouse. As a manager and supervisor now of others who are blind, Deaf-Blind, and blind with other disabilities, I consider it my turn to pass those opportunities forward by encouraging and supporting the efforts of those I supervise in expanding their own opportunities in a like manner.” Linda became visually impaired in 1974 as a result of Histoplasmosis, which caused her to lose her central vision. As a result, she was no longer able to drive her car. “Due to my vision, I lost my job at the Fence company where I worked, and was forced to go on Supplemental Security Income,” Linda recalls. “I was adjusting to my blindness and working with Washington State Department of Services for the Blind (DSB). At the end of 1982, DSB told me about the Lighthouse, and arrangements were made for me to be evaluated. Finally because of the Lighthouse and its mission, I received a new lease on life.”

Linda began as a production Worker back in 1983, and during her tenure has advanced to Set-Up Machinist, Lead, Supervisor, and eventually to her current role as production Manager. Linda is well known for her superior leadership skills, and many of her production staff have eventually received promotions. “Everything I’ve accomplished at the Lighthouse is because I’ve had management support and employees willing to try new things, learn and get the product out the door for the customer. Without the employees’ contribution, I would not be as successful. They make me look good.”

When not busily managing the Lighthouse’s production areas, Linda’s life revolves around her husband Ed, her two daughters Robyn and Hannah, her two grandchildren Katy and Robert, and being involved in her church and community.

Jeff Kuebler, Production Worker, Sr.Jeff Kuebler was 25 years old when he fully lost his vision to Retinitis pigmentosa, a condition he had since birth. Going to school had become increasingly difficult as his vision deteriorated, and many of the assistive technologies used by people who are blind today were not readily available back then. “[Finding work] was very difficult. I did a variety of manual labor-type jobs because I still had some vision, but it kept getting harder and harder as I was losing my sight,” Jeff remembers.

After graduating high school, Jeff spent two years at Bellevue community college taking general studies. He found out about The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. through the Washington State Department of Services for the Blind, and in 1988 came in for an assessment of his skills. “I wanted to work at the Lighthouse because I’d always worked my whole life, and I knew that the Lighthouse was one of the only places that would hire me at the time,” he notes. “Finally in March of 1989 they hired me on as a production Worker and I’ve been here ever since.”

Jeff has spent much time cross training in various production positions at the Lighthouse, from assembly and machine operation, to his current work in the Injection Mold shop. “I’ve learned how to work as a team with other people. Helping co-workers out, them helping me — all under a group effort.”

When Jeff is not busy with his responsibilities at the Lighthouse, he enjoys being active in his church, taking his guide dog polo out for walks, exercising, and cross-country skiing.

As the outgoing and incoming Foundation Board presidents for Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation, it is our privilege to report on the charitable funds raised in 2011. Donations stewarded by Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation support our mission to provide employment for people who are blind, Deaf-Blind, and blind with other disabilities through its manufacturing and service businesses.

Each of us came to support this mission in a different way – one of us through a family member helped by the organization, the other through a professional connection. Lighthouse donors and community partners are similarly moved by the results of our employment opportunities and by the personal stories of improved lives.

As leaders and members of the Foundation board, we work with partners like you to raise funds for the Employee and community Services programs that make employment possible.

In 2011, our mission benefitted from generous planned gifts through wills and other financial tools, which resulted in one of our best years in terms of charitable funds raised.

The Redefining Vision event and our inaugural Spokane Braille Rally at Inland Northwest Lighthouse inspired numerous gifts from individuals, increased major giving, and attracted sponsorship support.

Significant corporate and foundation gifts came throughout the year from organizations like The Norcliffe Foundation, Wells Fargo Foundation, RealNetworks, Okuma America and Gosiger Northwest, to name just a few.

It takes all these partners to make our important work possible. Thank you for being part of this commitment.

Creating Opportunities With Your Gift

Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation holds responsibility for creating opportunities for the community to charitably support the mission of The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc.

We are dedicated to creating and enhancing opportunities for independence and self-sufficiency of people who are blind, Deaf-Blind, or blind with other disabilities. Our mission addresses the ongoing challenges of working age adults who are blind. The unemployment rate for blind individuals is 70%. For Deaf-Blind individuals, that rate is 80%.

By creating 225 jobs for people with a visual disability, we are making a difference. But making that difference depends on the dedicated support of individuals and organizations.

Our support services make it possible to create meaningful, sustainable jobs for our employees while enhancing their lives.

These services include assistive technology, computer training, braille literacy, mobility and travel safety, and our outreach through Deaf-Blind community classes and annual Deaf-Blind Retreat.

They require the effort and expertise of employees, technology, equipment, and training. And, they require charitable funds to make them possible.

Every gift is welcomed by Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation. Every gift helps create jobs, training opportunities, and the supports necessary for the Lighthouse to work toward its mission. Every gift creates opportunities.
