1.2 TLN Update
TLN 1. Library News
Clawson Library’s building renovation is under way. The library is closed. They are
expecting to re-open in November.
TLN 2. TLN News
TLN will be moving to Novi on Vincenti Court. The site is east of Meadowbrook and
north of Grand River.
TLN 3. Upcoming TLN Events
SAM User Group – August 18, Novi Public Library, 1:30-3:30pm
Technology Services Meeting – September 27, Novi, 1:30-3:30pm

2. Discussion Topics:
2.1 Video Conferencing Sub-Committee
The sub-committee selected Microsoft Live Meeting as the recommended product for a
member-shared video conferencing service.
The Live Meeting service is hosted by Microsoft; no additional hardware required.
Service is FREE for attendees.
Licensing: Standard license allows for 250 connections; Pro license allows for 1250.
Hardware solutions explored by the committee included: Merit, AT&T, vBrick, Lifesize,
and ID Solutions. These solutions were deemed too expensive due to the hardware
requirements.
Other software-based (web) solutions explored included: WebEx, Google Wave (which
has been canceled), and GoToMeeting. All of these solutions were more expensive then
Live Meeting and offer no real functionality advantages.
Current limitations: the 64-bit Live Meeting Client can only share PPT documents. This
should be corrected with future updates.
USE EXAMPLES (and notes):
o Streaming TLN Training Sessions
o Streaming TLN Tech Comm Meetings
o New TLN Mobile Lab laptops all have webcams for streaming purposes
DEMO: There will be a possible demonstration of Live Meeting in September, either at
the TLN Technology Services meeting, or at the September TLN Tech Comm meeting.
More information on a demo will be communicated through the TLN mailing lists.
MOTION: to present Video Conferencing solution to the TLN Steering Committee
(September 13th
in Livonia) by Andrew (WATE); 2nd

2.2 Terminal Servers in Libraries – Novi’s TS/VDI Space

Highlights from the slide presentation are below.
Server Based Computing (SBC)
How it works
o Terminal sessions run on the server and are “screencasted” to clients using RDP
or Citrix ICA
Advantages
o Centralized application management
o Scales very well (application sharing)
o Can utilize low power, thin client machines
o Low cost
Disadvantages
o Application crashes can impact all users
o Not all apps will work in this model (example: Comprise SAM)
o Peripheral support is challenging
o Multimedia apps perform poorly (enter Remote FX)
Ideal Use Case
Predictable use, no multimedia machines, like our OPACs
Virtual Desktops (VDI)
How it works
o Clients attach to VMs running on the server that are “screencasted” to clients
using RDP, PCoIP, or Citrix ICA
Advantages
o Each user has their own VM, this isn’t application sharing (so it works with SAM
and other Access Management software)
o Centralized image management
o Images are hardware independent
o Easy recovery from corruption or hardware failures
o Dynamic load balancing, computing power goes where it’s needed
o Easily move or re-purpose client machines
o Can utilize low power, thin client machines
Disadvantages
o Multimedia and video apps perform poorly
o More expensive than traditional SBC, data center requirements
o A VM must be maintained for each client machine

SAN - sizing and especially performance are key factors
Server hardware sized according to workload
Costs
Note: “only real savings are in operations”; virtual computing only makes sense for
large installed bases (150 or more PCs)
Low cost client machines are key to making VDI work financially. Capital savings are
minimal, operational efficiency is where it’s at.
NPL IT acquired the Samsung zero clients for $450 / unit versus an estimated $850 for a
PC meeting our requirements.
Translates to $400 savings / unit * 170 = $68,000.
Much of this savings is transferred to VMware licensing and server infrastructure costs.
o $38,000 for VMware licenses
o $24,000 for servers

3.1 Security Issues, Tech Tips, and Web Sites Worth a Look

ID Theft and Social Engineering: Livonia recently had an issue with a patron using a
stolen ID to access the shared computers. Other libraries have had similar issues since
patrons do not typically change the default PIN. It was recommended to explore the idea
of using a more secure default PIN, such as the last 4 digits of a telephone number.
Scanned IDs: A question was posed as to whether or not libraries should allow scanned
identification (scanned library cards, licenses, barcodes, etc.). There is an increase in
patrons bringing in scanned copies of their barcode (on their cell phones) and attempting
to use self-checks. IR scanners cannot handle barcodes on LCD screens. The general
consensus in answering the scanned ID question was “No”. Anyone can scan an ID card.
A proper state-issued license or library card should be required to check out items.

Where have you found inspiration while saving money? Come ready to share positive
programs that you have established with schools who have lost media specialists,
partnerships you have formed (with the community or other library departments), great
ideas on doing more with less hours or resources, or any other ideas that promote positive
thinking in tough times. Show your “can-do” attitude! Handouts would be appreciated.

Edith Burney, Youth and Teen Librarian at Chelsea District Library, will discuss the world of
anime and manga, and ways to build and maintain a reasonable collection. She will
discuss:
a. Definitions and types of anime and manga
b. Age-appropriate purchases
c. Building a collection (titles and budget) d. Hosting manga and anime clubs
Faves and Raves: Be ready to offer suggestions from your own collections! What anime and manga titles are your favorites? What programs have been a smash?
