Fall Greetings from the President of
the Friends – Ginna
Shahid…
Greetings, dear FRIENDS! Was yours a fun
summer? Did you get a chance to go places
and do things? If you are anything like me,
you are now looking forward to the cooler
nights that autumn guarantees while hoping
that the warmer days last far into October.
This year, FOBPL’s celebration of warmer
days began with the library’s annual May
Baskets raffle. As always, our community of
library lovers came together to offer up and
then bid on 48 fun-filled baskets. The
competition was stiff, and thanks to you,
fellow community members, the raffle was a
huge success.
As you know, our fundraising goes directly
towards supporting library programs such as
the much anticipated and lauded Children’s
Summer Reading Programs. In June I was
thrilled to see our funds in action when I
helped staff the library’s Summer Reading
kick-off extravaganza. Yes, I was at the first
table greeting our eager young readers while
handing out a Moana Character Search game
and raffle tickets to all comers. It was fun!
It was exhausting! It was a day well spent at
the library!
FOBPL has added a new annual event to our
summer calendar, a Saturday tea honoring
the many volunteers who help keep our
library strong through their service. In July
we plied our FRIENDS and library
volunteers with hot and cold beverages, as
well as fresh fruit, scones, tea sandwiches,
and fresh baked desserts, and still this was
just a small token of our great appreciation. I
would have to say that our little tea was a
big success. The steady stream of imbibers
left with full bellies and big smiles on their
faces after getting a chance to sit down and
chat with friends old and new. I like to think
that our Annual Volunteer Tea is now one
more reason to begin volunteering today!

Small donations are welcome at any time
by placing your donated items (books,

our FRIENDS Book Store that is right
next to the circulation exit door.
I wish you all a restful Labor Day and a
busy autumn full of golden leaves and
dreams.
Ginna
Virginia Churchill Shahid, President
Friends of the Burlington Public Library
From the Desk of Michael Wick,
Library Director…
I hope you’ve enjoyed a fantastic summer,
even though the weather wasn’t always
terribly cooperative. We’ve been incredibly
busy this summer, providing everyone with
beach reads, museum passes, and summer
reading programs. You’d think we’d take a
break, but Fall is our busiest season, with
school beginning and our full roster of
programs beginning again. Our Author
Series continues this Fall, and we’ll have
two great authors—Dave Wedge discussing
the stunning season the Patriots had in 2016,
and New York Times best-selling author
William Martin presenting his new book
Bound for Gold. The Youth Services
Department will be continuing their great
programs as well, where your child or teen
can celebrate “Talk Like a Pirate Day” or
trying their hand at an Escape Room
Challenge.
The Friends have been busy too, with a great
fundraiser at the Flatbread Pizza Company
in August. If you missed out on that
fundraiser, please consider becoming a
member of the Friends, at an extremely
reasonable membership fee! You’ll find our
membership levels listed on the last page of
the newsletter. In addition to having the
satisfaction of helping a great cause, you’ll
also have the additional bonus of buying two
books and getting the third for free at the
upcoming Fall Book Sale.
