Introduction
The Leo Feist collection was acquired by the Library of Congress from Leo Feist's son, LeonardFeist, in 1977. Leo Feist, 1869-1930, began his career as a corset salesman and composed songs as anavocation. When he failed to find a publisher for his work he set up his own firm to deal in popular songs."You can't go wrong with a Feist song" was the slogan printed on every copy of the firm's sheet music. Awonderful marketer, Feist soon had company branches in England, France, Germany, and Australia, specializing in American popular music.
The collection is primarily comprised of a set of 26 volumes in which are bound most of the musicacquired by Leo Feist Publishers, Inc., between the years of 1883 and 1930 - approximately 2,000 titles. Also, included in Leonard Feist’s gift are vocal scores of Paoletta, Irene, and M. Beaucaire, as well as a“Feist Dance Folio” of popular music arranged for the piano.
Leonard Feist began his music publishing career with his father's company and held executivepositions with Feist, Century Music Publishing Co./Mercury Music Corporation. Feist moved on to be thepresident of the Associated Music Publishers (1956-64), and the National Music Publishers Association(1976). He held board positions on the National Music Council, and was actively involved with the MusicPublishers of the United States, the National Academy of Popular Music, and the Copyright Society of theUSA.

Scope and Content Note
The 26 volumes of bound sheet music that comprise the majority of the Leonard Feist Collectionhave been variously organized in chronological order, and/or in alphabetical order by format. The firsttwelve volumes include songs published between 1880 and 1911 organized into two alphabeticalsets–volumes 1 through 6 comprising one alphabet and volumes 7 through 12 the other. It appears that theoriginal concept between these two sets was that one would contain vocal music and the otherinstrumental–mostly piano–but this pattern does not hold true, and both sets include both vocal andinstrumental works. In addition, there are occasional alphabetical inconsistencies between the volumes.Volumes 13 through 26 are arranged primarily chronologically by publication date with some overlaps andinconsistencies, and cover the years 1912 through 1930. There is a gap for the year 1925–presumably amissing volume. The volume numbers were supplied by the Library, and represent what we consider to bethe most logical organization of the collection.
Researchers using the Feist collection may choose to approach the collection as a whole and gothrough it volume by volume; however, this finding aid also provides access by either song title or composername. The body of the finding aid is comprised of an alphabetical listing of all song titles represented in thecollection. Additional information includes the composer(s) name, the format of the piece–usually eitherpiano or piano vocal–and the volume(s) that include the work. Some titles also include notes; usually theserefer either to a songbook collection which is bound inside a volume, or physical oddities in the bindingprocess where various pages of a song were inserted in the wrong place. In some cases, no composer namewas provided, but rather that of an arranger. There is no shortcut to finding a title within a volume, and theresearcher may have to page through an entire volume to find a specific work.
There were many inconsistencies for how composers names appeared on the individual works. These differences run the gamut from: first names alternating with initials to variant spellings of lastnames–such as Fred Fisher and Fred Fischer. In instances where we were reasonably certain that a variantspelling designated the same person, we chose to provide a uniform name. In most cases, no attempt wasmade to resolve these differences and the researcher is encouraged to check likely variant spellings ofcomposers names in the index. The Alphabetical Composer Index at the end of this finding aid, (pgs. 83-113), lists composers or arrangers and all song titles that are associated with them. Some titles credit asmany as four composers, all of whom would be referenced in the index. The researcher must then crossreference this information with the song titles in the body of the finding aid to determine which volume(s)they will require.
Researchers using the Feist Collection may be interested to know of a card catalog in the PerformingArts Reading Room that indexes all titles from the Leo Feist Dance Folios, mostly from the 1920's, in ourgeneral collections. The majority of these Dance Folios are not included in the bound volumes that comprisethis–The Leo Feist Collection.
