SIMPLY ***FIREWORKS*** 2013 Steve Ackman, General Manager, and George Mason, Trustee, request

the HELP of a Few Motivated Volunteers to get on board for This Year’s Display of Rozzi Fireworks. We understand, “It is a tough act to follow.”

Becky Reaves recalls getting involved in fireworks, beginning May of 2009. So you see, there is still time to help with the miscellaneous tasks, in order to make the show happen. Please HELP, HELP, HELP! …..YOU CAN DO IT!!! GIVE IT YOUR BEST and we will have a FAN-TASTIC 2013 FIREWORKS SHOW.

FIREWORKS 2013 will be a simplified version of former fireworks shows. There will be no fundraising, no tee shirt sales, no inflatable rides, no fire truck tours, no hot air balloon rides, no gate collections, and no music synchronized to the fireworks. "SIMPLY FIREWORKS 2013" may be our last fireworks show, if no volunteers offer their help this year or next year.

Please contact Steve Ackman, General Manager, at (513)875-3435 or George Mason, Trustee, at (513)515-3522 with any questions. The folks at Lake Lorelei THANK YOU for considering this opportunity.

“Spring has Sprung” and PRIDE has already busy with work at the Clubhouse. Updates to the Men’s Room have begun and we are repairing the east-facing window in the attic over the restaurant. In early June the outside maintenance begins with pressure washing, scraping, caulking, repair of the wood trim, and painting. We are looking for carpenters, painters, and gofers. Hope you can join us—call Mike Hopkins at 304-8633 and offer your services.

Start sending your photos to Dianne Behm ([email protected]) for the 2014 Lake Lorelei calendar. Send her the photo with your name and your lot number to be eligible to win the “Snapshot of the Season” contest. Remember, you don’t need to be a professional—you just have to have snapped that one moment in time that represents us at our best. Do you have a suggestion for a project? Let me know and let’s form a team to get it done!!

Have you seen PRIDE’s benches and mailboxes popping up around your neighborhood? We have installed over 30 benches and 10 mailboxes!! The cost of concrete and the high-end lumber we are using continues to escalate and we will soon need to raise our prices. Get your orders in by May 31, 2013, to lock in the current rate.

Garden Tips & Idea’s 101

1. Plant a garlic clove 8 to 12 inches by tomatoes for improved taste and healthier plants.

2. Plant tomatoes deep for stronger plants, all other veggie cell packs at soil level

3. Don’t plant tomatoes too early or you will have plants just sitting in the ground;

tomatoes need soil temps 55 degrees or above, to grow.

4. Plant nasturtiums around squash and broccoli to deter pests.

5. Water from boiled eggs is great for houseplants. It is rich in calcium.

6. Till coarse sand (not play sand) in garden beds to improve clay soil.

7. To jolt late spring; roses, tomatoes, azaleas, rhododendrons and hydrangeas, add a

half cup of used coffee grounds to the soil.

8. Line the bottom of a hanging basket with a diaper, and water less.

9. For slug problems, take crumbled eggshells and place around affected plants; this cuts

the slug’s soft body.

10.When planting new roses, add a handful of bone meal and a cut up banana peel—do

not fertilize until you see a lot of leaf growth.

11.Ant problems; sprinkle cornmeal around entrance of the ant trail.

12.A combination of honey and vinegar painted on stone terra cotta or concrete speeds up

the process of moss--for the aged look.

13. Use Epson salts in late spring sprinkled around any flower, veggie or shrub—1or2

tablespoons is rich in potassium, magnesium and trace minerals, not to mention

inexpensive.

These organic tips keep synthetic fertilizers and pesticides on the store shelves and not in our gardens. Remember manure, composting and organic mulches like grass clippings or shredded leaves keep your veggie garden more organic.

We invite you to visit our garden again this year during SUMMER KICK-OFF—Saturday, June 8th between 9-11 AM.

We enjoy sharing ideas and talking garden!

CARL MOSBAUGH I first came to Lake Lorelei with my parents in 1967 with my parents. I have been a full-time resident since 2009 at 1352 Lorelei Drive. I graduated from Western Hills High School in 1964, and went on to graduate from the University of Cincinnati in Industrial Engineering and Business Administration. I am currently retired from Packaging Corporation of America.

I have worked 46 years in the pulp paper and packaging industry. I worked in many different locations and positions in manufacturing including division manufacturing manager. I was in charge of all capital improvements, budgeting, variance analysis and compliance, in charge of ISO 9000, safety compliance environmental compliance and all production for over 200 team members, and negotiated 20 labor/management contracts.

My goal is to contribute to making Lake Lorelei a better and safer place to live through recognition that our residents and our employees are our most valuable resource. I will focus on Lake safety, vessel safety and enforce Lake rules and regulations. The board has asked me to run the Lake safety committee.

I am a member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. I have worked on the annual Lake Lorelei Car Club contributing to the club’s organization in years 2009 and 2010.

Don’t Miss Your Chance! Your Ballot Is Due Monday, May 13

You have received a ballot to vote for 3 Lake Lorelei Trustees. These are the people who will be making the decisions for you regarding our community and how it is run. These decisions will have a direct impact on you whether you are a full time or part time owner. It is surprising how few residents take the time to vote and mail in the ballot. Last year only 237 out of 765 members returned their ballot. This means those in control of what happens in our community were elected by only 31% of the members, which is an extremely small amount. In a small community every vote really does count, so please take the time to find out the issues and vote.

Below are some “dos and don’ts” for making your decision on who to vote for: Do find out about a candidate and what they stand for before you vote

for them. Do consider whether the candidate has been on the board previously and if you like the

decisions that have been made. If possible do hear them speak or call them and ask questions. Don’t just choose names at random Don’t vote for someone just because you’ve heard the name if you don’t know anything about them. If you don’t vote don‘t complain about how things are run.

When the ballot comes a sheet with a brief background of each candidate will be included, be sure to read it. This may seem like a lot of work, but it really doesn’t take long.

Remember, these people will be the ones making decisions for you!

DENIS BEHM I was elected to the board 3 years ago and was happy to serve. It was more challenging and time consuming than I ever thought possible but was definitely worth my time. I have met some great people here at the Lake and on the Board that I may not have met otherwise. I truly believe that our current Board is doing what they feel is best for all our lake members.

It has been a pleasure serving with this group as we all work well together and we have been able to make several improvements to our Lake as a result. We still have more to do and hope that those of you who voted for me the last time are satisfied with my performance. For those of you who didn’t vote for me last time, I hope I have proved myself to you.

I am proud to serve our Lake community and I would appreciate your vote.

GEORGE MASON Dr. George Mason I am currently a member of your Board of Trustees. I was appointed to serve the balance of the term vacated by a Board member’s resignation. I would like the opportunity to continue to serve our Lake community by serving an elected term of office on your Board. My one and only campaign promise is quite simple. Each and every action that I take as a Board member will be in the best interest of our overall community. Who am I ? My wife, of 45 years, and I retired to 13 Lorelei Drive in 2007. Demographically that would make us “off-Lake” full time residents with a long term commitment to the community. We also have a vested interest in the quality of our Lake. We rent a LLPOA dock and enjoy tubing, skiing and fishing with our children and grandchildren. What are my Qualifications? I hold advanced degrees in both Civil Engineering (OSU) and Construction Engineering and Management (Stanford). I spent my entire working career as a construction engineer and construction project manager. I believe that I can help the Board improve our deteriorating infrastructure. What have I done for our Community? I served on the Board’s Finance Committee in the unsuccessful effort to pass a Dues Increase and the successful effort to pass a Road Assessment. I served on the PRIDE committee that completed Phase I and II of the East Beach restoration and the renovation of the upper room of our Clubhouse. More recently, I served as an unpaid consultant to the Board on the Spillway Project, the Gates Project and the Entrance Culvert Project. Most recently, I currently serve on the Board’s “Code” committee charged with both merging and improving our Code of Regulations/By-Laws.

KATHRYN GREENE

As a 30 year resident of this community I wish to serve it once again as I did some years ago. I believe my business education and experience pro-vide me with the necessary tools to help LLPOA a lot.

I wish to resurrect the mediation committee to aid the resolution of exter-nal differences. I co-founded the committee and believe it is an essential part of LLPOA business. I wish to also energize the code committee to full function for the betterment of governance of our community.

As an LLPOA trustee I will be committed to uphold the code in the best in-terest of the corporation and the property owners, after all, what is good for one is really good for the other.

As an LLPOA trustee I will never knowingly violate my fiduciary duty to the association or violate the liberties of any property owner. I will support only those board actions that are legal and proper.

My major concerns for LLPOA center around code compliance (trustees and property owners), appropriate venue streams, and safeguarding associa-tion assets.

As a Certified Public Accountant I bring a full range of business expertise to assist with the professional administration of LLPOA. I am anxious to help lead Lake Lorelei to a brighter future.

CHIP SUDBRACK

My name is Chip Sudbrack and I own and manage Sudbrack, Inc., a realtor and commercial real estate company that has been in business for over 88 years. We specialize in commercial property management and the buying and selling of property for clients. I have been a licensed agent and broker in Ohio and Kentucky for the past 29 years. I am the past president of Cincinnati Area Board of Realtors, past chairman and current member of the Cincinnati Real Estate Commercial Council, past chairman and current member of the Ohio Commercial Council and current member of the University of Cincinnati Real Estate Education Action Committee. I have owned and managed for clients hundreds of apartments and commercial properties.

I have owned my house at Lake Lorelei for approximately 11 years. My family and I love the lake and all the fun and friends that come with it.

Over the past 11 years I have seen Lake Lorelei go through several phases and great progress. We need to continue with this progress and I am offering my time, knowledge and experience as a Trustee to see that the progress continues in the future.

Several things I think need to be addressed or continued to be addressed are the financial physical stability of the lakes its assets and the lake community, boating safety, and a long range dredging plan. Lake Lorelei is a lake community and if we do not take care of our lakes we will not have a viable community. I hope you will consider voting for me. I believe in giving back. The lake has given me and my family great joy.

The Sustainability of Lake Lorelei Open Discussions About Decisions That Influence Lake Lorelei

Dear Board of Trustees: I heard from a neighbor something about a “misallocation” of Road Fund monies. Can you help me understand what they are talking about? Board Response: The short answer is that no funds were misallocated. The long answer is that due to book keeping errors and personnel turnovers, there was a delay in the transfer of Road Assessment funds from the General Operating accounts to the Road Fund account. The typical LLPOA invoice bills for Membership Dues, Service Fees and Road Assessment. As a convenience to our members, LLPOA accepts one check or one credit card transaction covering all three items. Your payment goes into the General Operating accounts and then the Road Assessment must be manually transferred from the General Operating accounts to the Road Assessment account. Due to clerical errors: 1) in 2010 too much was transferred to the Road Assessment account and 2) in 2011 and 2012, too little was transferred. YEAR Received Transferred Difference

Thanks to The Roads Committee and LLPOA member Roger Lincer, this error was caught. The Board took prompt action to: 1) implement office procedures to avoid this problem in 2013 and 2) transfer $35,874.27 from the General Operating accounts to the Road Assessment account. Honest mistakes happened and were corrected.

2010 $ 172,468.32 $ 173,039.09 + $ 570.77

2011 $ 175,367.64 $ 160,283.33 <$ 15,084.31>

2012 $ 159,804.93 $ 138,444.20 <$ 21,360.73>

Total <$ 35,874.27>

Dear Board of Trustees:

On the December 31, 2012 Balance Sheet, LLPOA is carrying the Gate Project as a fixed asset valued at almost $90,000.00. Are the gates really saving us money?

Gate Economics:

Are the gates actually saving money when compared to 24/7 Security personnel? Let’s look at the fourth quarter of 2012 (October, November & December)

With 24/7 Security Personnel, the cost of security for 12 weeks would have been approximately:

Total: $ 18,781.36

The approximate cost of Security w/ the electronic security gates was: Security Labor: $7,490.28 Employer taxes and contributions: $ 773.25 Gate Loan : $7,349.64 Operation & Maintenance: $ 949.98 Total: $ 16,563.15

Approx. Fourth Quarter Savings: $ 2,218.21

The same numbers would yield a $9,567.85 quarterly savings after the loan is retired. The electronic Gate Security system was financed by a loan through National Bank and Trust (see article on Loans in last issue). Loan repayment is being funded from the General Fund which includes monies from dues, fees and from the sale of auto bar codes. The electronic Gate Security system is a money saving venture. Money much needed for the Sustainability of Lake Lorelei. Hint #1: For better security and better gate operation, report tailgaters. Should someone tailgate you through either gate, there is no need for a confrontation. Slow down, let them pass and record their license number, note the date and time. Report this information to the office. Hint #2: For better efficiency, call the Office or Security Shack and ask for your four digit Directory Number. Give this number to family or friends. Upon arriving at the Guests pedestal, your friends need not look you up on the pedestal but rather simply enter your four digit code. Your phone will ring, you answer and press “9”. Your friend or family member will be admitted to the Lake. Hint #3: Having a big party, call the Office and ask for a one time Gate Security Code. Publish the code on your invitations. Upon arriving at the Guests pedestal, on the correct date and times , your guests need only input the number and the gate will open.

Environmental Sustainability: The over population of Geese on our lake can be controlled. In an effort to limit the goose population on Lake Lorelei several LLPO have volunteered to legally shake eggs. This prevents the egg from hatching and discourages the female from laying additional eggs. The nests are flagged and the eggs are marked in order to track the efforts.

If you find a nesting goose on your property and would like someone to shake the eggs call Bill Young at 875-3604.

Perry Township, the home of Lake Lorelei, is the most northern region of Brown County which extends south to the Ohio River and is designated one of the Ohio Appalachian counties. Known as the “panhandle” the township is eight miles east to west and 17 miles north to south, a small portion of which provides the water that feeds Lake Lorelei.

From topographical maps in Georgetown the Glady Run Watershed stretches five miles north to near the Perry-Clinton County line at some 980 feet above sea level and falls to 925 feet at Lake Gruenwald east to west. It averages 1.5 miles wide, 7.5 square miles or 4800 acres squeezed between the East Fork and Grassy Fork systems. Several small unnamed streams documented on maps within the watershed are known by life-long rural residents as Glady Run. Not all flow into the lake.

Over time Glady Run and all of its tributaries have risen in water runoff volume, a result of increased tillage of the land. Although there are many runoff areas, mainly at the end of coves, there are three principal arteries that feed the lake. The primary one is Glady Run itself which flows under the Fayetteville-Blanchester Road and then under Glady Road before it enters the lake under Lorelei Drive at Brahms Cove CC. The second is a West Branch that also passes under Glady Road and enters Lake Fichtelberg near the water tower. The third, O’Reilly Road branch, flows under Lorelei Drive and enters the lake through Lake Gruenwald (Cove F).

One inch of runoff water could raise the water level in the main lake as much as 10-15 inches or more in a very short period of time, sometimes hours, under the right conditions—particularly when the ground is frozen, is already saturated or during very heavy sustained downpours dependent upon the lake’s pool level.

The Glady Run waterway continues its journey under S.R. 131, passes under U.S. 50 and joins the East Fork of the Little Miami, eventually entering the Ohio River east of Cincinnati. The Glady Run waterway continues its journey under S.R. 131, passes under U.S. 50 and joins the East Fork of the Little Miami near the Old Lorelei Waterworks above McCafferty Road entering the Ohio River east of Cincinnati.

Great emphasis has been placed on the need for careful water management for the health of the Lake Lorelei as well as the entire watershed that replenishes it.

(Data compiled from U.S, Soil and Water office, Georgetown, 1980 and 1876 atlas maps plus interviews with area residents providing information dating back decades before American Realty construction for the site. The Legend thanks them for their contributions.)

By: Linda Brown I announced last month the formation of a new committee to work on the LLPOA Governing Documents. This 5-person committee (Linda Brown, Mary Dooloukas, George Mason, Ken Rowland, and Jane Wyman) is comprised of current and former trustees, 3 of whom have served as Board Presidents. Though I was somewhat skeptical to have a committee comprised completely of trustees, I was persuaded that those who have served are the ones most familiar with the documents and with the difficulties created by having multiple documents. With the progress we have made, I hope you will agree that it was a very good decision. Remember the explanation from my last article— The 2003 Amended By-Laws and the 1998 Code of Regulations are supposed to be used together but it can be a struggle to understand and interpret them. In a nutshell—2003 trumps 1998 but 1998 still applies where it does not conflict with 2003. Since I began paying attention to the administration of the Lake in 2004, there has always been a stated goal to establish a single, user-friendly document. There have been multiple attempts and multiple committees. As we established the newest committee, we did not want to fall prey to the same difficulties as those that came before us. We, therefore, established an aggressive plan with straight-forward and limited goals. Specifically, we want:

1. To merge the 2 existing documents without changing the principles 2. To create a document in plain English 3. To provide some enhanced processes for members while leaving existing

options in place

I am very pleased to report that we are ahead of schedule. Version 2 of our draft went to the full committee for their review at the beginning of April and was presented to our legal counsel in mid-April. Once the changes from counsel are incorporated, we will present the document to the Board—May of 2013 is the goal. After the document has been examined, probably updated, and then approved by the Board, it will be posted on the Lake Lorelei website (www.lakeloreleiohio.com) for membership review. There will also be a few hardcopies available at the office for those who do not have internet access. Several open meetings will be scheduled during the summer for members to comment and provide feedback on the proposed document. Please contact me with questions, comments, and advice about the project at 875-3396 or at [email protected]
