Rehearsals
Once again, we are delighted to announce
that Healing school achieved outstanding
results in the latest table of GCSE results.
Over 80% of pupils
achieved five or more
A*-C grades, including
English and maths, and
97% gained five or more
A* - C grades overall.
All subject areas had
pleasing results, with
science and humanities
doing particularly well.
Mr Knapton said the
results reflected the hard
work and dedication of
both the pupils and staff,
despite changes to the
curriculum.
The new academic year
is now underway and the
focus is on maintaining
the high standards and
excellent results the
school is renowned for.

Dear Parent/Carer
Welcome to the first full edition of Hotline, for this academic year. I think you will see from the news here
that the first half term has been hugely successful and packed full of activities. As you can read, the
success started in August when our 2014 leavers achieved fantastic individual GCSE results and together,
helped Healing to another outstanding set of results. Our Year 7 pupils have settled well into their new
school and all other year groups have also got the year off to an excellent start.
I hope you enjoy reading this edition and thank you, as always, for your support.
Mr M Knapton, Principal
From next half-term we will be launching
the ‘Healing Bookworms.’ This is a reading
group aimed at pupils of all ages and we
have one objective in mind: getting our
pupils to talk about and enjoy their reading.
We all know what it’s like when you get stuck
into a good book – you just want to chat to
someone else who has read it. Well, Healing
Bookworms gives your child the chance to do
just that. Furthermore, we have registered
with the Doncaster Book Awards, an initiative
where pupils read a short list of books then
are responsible for commenting on,
reviewing and deciding on the winning
publication. This year, the shortlisted books
include new releases such as Zom B by
Darren Shan, as well as a few classics such
as The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson
Burnett.
Healing Bookworms will meet every
Monday at 12.10 in room 1/3.
Pupils in years 7-11 are welcome.
Watch this space for future book
reviews and recommendations.

Bookbuzz is a reading
programme delivered by the
Booktrust, which supports
schools to encourage reading
for pleasure, independent
choice and aims to develop a
whole school reading culture.
Participating schools give their
students the opportunity to
choose their own book to keep
from a list of 17 titles suitable
for 11 - 13-year-olds and
selected by a panel of
experts. The programme is
aimed primarily at Year 7
pupils.
Healing school has taken part in the scheme for
the last 3 years. This year, the two most popular
titles were ‘Geek Girl’ by Holly Smalle and a
compilation of ‘Stories From WW1’ by Tony
Bradman.

Year 11 Careers Evening
And Revision Support
On Tuesday 7th October, the Post 16 Options
Evening was held, as it is each autumn term at
Healing school. The event hosts a mixture of
interesting stalls from both colleges and local
employers. It provides young people with
information about what opportunities are
available to them once they finish their school
education. Some pupils are considering going
on to further education, whilst others are
hoping to take up an apprenticeship.
The careers evening is just one of the events
we hold to support pupils with their career
choices. This informative evening is intended to
help Year 11 pupils feel clear about their next
career steps.
The Engineering Constructions Industry Training
Board (ECITB) was also in the school on 17th
October. They gave an interactive presentation
to our year 11 pupils in the old hall annex.
At this time of the year, many parents and
pupils ask me about suitable revision websites
and books to purchase to support young
people’s learning.
This year, staff have compiled a list and this can
be found on Frog via the subject folder. This
area includes which syllabus, which websites
and which books are useful. Happy revising Year
11 and happy supporting Year 11 parents!

Year 9 and 10 students have been using their
enterprise skills in a new Enterprise Club.
This half term the students have been working
on their presentations in preparation for the
Real Business Challenge sponsored by Coca
Cola.
This year the students have to come up with a
new juice brand that involves the Special
Olympic Games 2015. The students had to
come up with an original idea, slogan, logo and
brand name. Together with this they had to
create cost and profit projections for their drink.
Three teams will present their ideas to myself
and Mr Midgely, the Work Experience and
Careers Co-ordinator. The winning presentation
will be sent to Coca-Cola to be judged alongside
entries from 64 other schools from the East
Midlands region. The top ten entries will then
compete in the regional finals next year.
Last year, Healing pupils were successful in
reaching the regional finals held in Derby and
although didn’t win the regional competition,
put together a presentation that really
impressed the judges.

Year 9
Reward Card Scheme
This term, year 9 have been trialling a new
reward system in lessons.
The system involves collecting points on a
reward card. The pupils can collect up to three
points in a lesson. Points are rewarded for good
behaviour, effort, attitude, class work,
homework and contribution in class. If a pupil
collects all 18 points in a half term, they are
rewarded with a small stationery incentive.
It is hoped that the scheme will promote
positive contributions in classes and if
successful, could be rolled out throughout other
year groups.

English Teacher - Miss Waller,
Survives The Chase
English teacher, Miss Waller, had a recent brush
with fame when she appeared on ITV quiz show
‘The Chase’ earlier this month. Pupils were
rooting for Miss Waller who managed to answer
an impressive twelve questions in the quick fire
round, although was knocked out in the final
chase by ‘The Dark Destroyer’ - Shaun Wallace.
Miss Waller spoke about her exciting day -
‘ I travelled to London first class and was met
by a taxi which took me to the television centre.
There I met my team mates and we practised
the game for 2-3 hours. After lunch, we were
taken into make-up and our outfits for the show
were chosen. We were led onto the set where
we met Bradley Walsh and filming began about
5.00pm. I was the fourth and last contestant to
face ‘The Chaser.’ I was hoping to meet my
favourite chaser Mark Labbett - ‘The Beast’, but
we were faced with Shaun Wallace - ‘The Dark
Destroyer.’ When it was my turn to play, I felt
so nervous! However, I was pleased that I
managed to give twelve correct answers.
Ultimately, the chaser managed to beat me, so
although I didn’t win any money, the experience
was fantastic. After filming, we met Shaun
Wallace personally and he complimented me on
my attempt to beat him. At 7pm, The taxi
arrived to take me back to the station to catch
my train and I travelled home after a
thoroughly enjoyable day.’

Mobile
Phones
Please may
we remind all
pupils
regarding the
rules for
bringing
mobile
phones into
school.
They must be lodged in the morning at the
annexe with the office staff. If pupils arrive late,
they must go directly to the pupil office to sign in
and hand the phone in. If a pupil is found in
possession of a mobile phone in school, it will be
confiscated and put in the school safe until a
parent comes to collect the phone. Failure to
comply with these instructions or breach the
school rules by using a mobile phone to take
pictures or recordings in school will result in a
serious punishment.
Teaching Sex Education
We would like to inform you that your child will
be taught Sex Education throughout their time
at Healing School; it is not taught as a separate
topic isolated from other subjects, but is allowed
to develop naturally out of pupils’ work in many
subjects. However, all pupils take part in a
citizenship, personal and social education
programme which is taught as a discreet lesson
weekly. This lesson is now identified on the
timetable as PWL (Preparation for Working Life).
In Year 7, pupils learn about how their bodies
change through puberty and also how life begins
and develops. During Years 7, 8 and 9 the
pupils’ develop an awareness of personal
responsibilities and their role within
relationships. During Years 9, 10 and 11
lifestyles are considered in more depth. (Pupils
learn about contraception and S.T.I’s including
HIV/AIDS).
Should you wish to
exercise your statutory
right to remove your
child from these
lessons, please put this
request in writing and
address it to:
Mrs. E Croft, Vice Principal
Six teams consisting of both KS3 and KS4
pupils competed in the Grimsby and District
Boccia Tournament held at Franklin College on
Tuesday 21st October, accompanied by Mr
Norman, Mr Close and Miss Warner.
The KS4 teams, comprising of William Dixon,
Charlie Dunstan, Ben Taylor, Kate Bentham,
Hollie Scarborough and Kimberly Wood all
played fantastically, with the girls team coming
4th and the boys a commendable 3rd.
The KS3 teams were made up from the PATCH
club and coached by Mr Close and included
teams of Dylan Jennings and Justin Johnstone,
Cody Cowie and Eric Foster, Robert Smith and
Kenny Foster, Ben Smith and Max Cartwright.
Facing tough opponents from Humberston and
Oasis Academy Wintringham, the four teams
battled hard, ending the group stages in 1st and
3rd in group A and 1st and 2nd in group B. The
third place team of Robert and Kenny played
Oasis A team in the 5th/6th place play off. This
was a tough fixture, seeing the two boys
narrowly missing out on 5th spot and coming
6th. The 2nd placed team of Cody and Eric
played the Oasis B team for the 3rd place play
off. An excellent display saw Healing taking the
3rd place with a dominating performance.
Both Healing teams that won their group stages
now faced off for the title; Dylan and Justin
faced Max and Ben. Dylan and Justin had
played some great shots throughout the
tournament, but it was the consistent brilliance
of both Max and Ben that saw them through
and crowned the winners.
All pupils played outstandingly, considering they
were only introduced to the sport 2 weeks ago,
and should all be proud of their achievements.

Year 7 Settling In Evening
Year 7 parents were invited into school recently
to meet with tutors and discuss their child’s
progress since the new term began in
September.
The evening gives parents the opportunity to
talk to tutors on a one to one basis and to put
forward any questions they may have.
Year 8 mentors helped to show the parents
around and help with any questions. It was an
excellent event and many positive comments
were received by our visitors:
“All my questions were answered with lots
of helpful information given. A most
impressive start to my daughters first
year.”
“A good evening and really
informative. I have no concerns at all.”
“It was appreciated that I could chat to my child’s tutor and find out how my child is settling in.”
“The tutor was really easy to talk to and I’m pleased we were given the opportunity to meet so early in the term.”
“Plenty of staff members were around
and the student guides were very helpful
and pleasant.”
Parents are thanked for their support so far and
in particular, for ensuring pupils have the correct
uniform and equipment.
The next Year 7 Parents’ Evening is
Tuesday 28th April 2015.
Mr Phillips Competes in
Polish Karate Championships. Football Round-up
Healing boy's football
teams have started
well this year, with
the year 7 'Dream
Team' going unbeaten
in their first few
games. Mr Phillips is
expecting big things
from the boys are
they move on with
the season.
The year 8's had a slow start to the campaign
but found their best form to beat Wintringham
11-0, with Alex Taylor grabbing a hat trick.
Mr Norman and Mr Vincent's year 9 team have
started to put a run of wins together and played
superbly well to beat Wintringham 6-2, whilst
also making the semi finals of the Grimsby
School's cup. The all conquering year 10 team,
are still unbeaten in the local league after a hard
fought 2-2 draw with rivals, Toll Bar Academy.
Mr Norman is hoping they are able to match
their cup win last season.
Finally Mr Blockley's year 11 team have been
showning some encouraging form in the league,
where wins against Humberston
and Wintringham have been made up for a loss
at Toll Bar. The boys have saved their best form
for the ESFA competition, where they are now
due to face South Hunsley School in the fourth
round. This is the furthest the boys have ever
reached in the competition and inspiratitional
captain Ali Dirjal is hoping they are able to carry
on their fine run.
The girls under 13’s had great success in their
first ESFA fixture against St. Bedes. They beat
the opposing team 12-1 in an exceptional
performance.
The under 16’s girls delivered a thrilling game
and made it through to the 3rd round after
beating Skegness Academy 5-4.
On Saturday 4th October, PE teacher Mr Phillips
travelled to Bielsko-Biala in Poland to compete in
the Polish International Karate Open. Mr Phillips
said the event helped to prepare him for the
forthcoming world championships.
He received a gold medal in the senior section
(18+), in which many top international fighters
from around the world took part. Mr Phillips beat
contestants from Malta, Slovakia, Georgia
and Japan to take the title.
Dynamic Netball Team
Well done to the Year 7 Netball team who have
played some fantastic netball during the U12
Netball National League. The girls won their
first game against Goole High School, with
some precision shooting form Millie Magson and
Anna Lisztovszk. This pushed them through to
the next round against Queen Elizabeth High
School. With some exceptional defending by
Kaite Donner, Katie Ramsden and Charlotte
Fox, the girls were leading at half time 5-4.
Despite some great interceptions from Amelia
Stanley, Ellie Mai Cheung and Sophie Wilkinson,
the girls conceded a few extra goals making it
7- 6 with 8 minutes to go. Gabrielle Walker
kept up the pace as defender and motivated
the team. However, we conceded with a final
score of 10-6. The girls played some high
quality netball which bodes well for the local
school competitions.
