Mercury Marine’s Dave De Witt Elected President
of Marine Propeller Industry Association Las Vegas, NV No-
vember 3, 2012 _ The National Marine
Propeller Association members while in attendance at the 2012 NMPA convention elected Dave De Witt from Mercury Marine as its new President, succeeding Jimmie Harrison from Frank and Jimmie’s Propeller Shop in Fort Lauderdale, Fl who held the of-fice for the past 10 consecutive years.
A 12-year Mercury Ma-
rine employee, De Witt has been a member of NMPA’s board of directors since 2005. He holds bachelor’s and mas-ter’s degrees in metallurgical engineering from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He also recently obtained a master certificate in project manage-ment from UW Madison. “The NMPA is a group of small business owners who are com-mitted to excellence in the field of inboard and outboard propel-ler repair. I’m looking forward to working with a group filled with such talented and passionate individuals.
Dave has been married
to his bride, Patti, for over 24 years now. They have two boys Joel 20 and Aaron 16. They currently enjoy life in Fond du
Lac however Dave is originally from Rhinelander, Wisconsin and grew up along the Wisconsin River.
“My Vision for the NMPA is to make its members more suc-cessful through education, certifi-cation, exposure to quality ven-dors and provide ample opportu-nity for networking via our annual convention and our website. I hope to make NMPA.NET an in-tegral part of each members suc-cessful business. Each year our convention brings our members together to renew friendships, make new ones, network with other propellers shops, meet our vendors and enjoy Las Vegas”. What you missed: This year’s convention was very strong. Last year’s con-vention looked like the be-ginning of the end. Actu-ally, what we were looking at, last year, was how im-portant Don Jackson and Jimmie Harrison were, as they were both distracted by family health issues pre-
ceding that convention.
Who I missed: I sure would like to meet the two grandsons from Miller’s Island Propeller one year at the conven-tion. I think they would fit right in and would bring with them lots of energy and ideas. They come from one of the finest families in the business. So, if you are calling Miller’s Island to buy something, give them a nudge. Don Jackson and I have tried repeatedly with no success, so I guess we
need your help.
The limits of ham-mers: I showed some
pictures, at the convention, of a new press I built to test the limits of holding props. The press weighs 21,000 pounds and it can clamp down on a prop with 50,000 pounds of pressure. While it lets me do some interesting things like reset the rake on an F series Volvo prop with a couple whacks, it has also shown me the limits of what I can do. I am more convinced than ever that we need to put a lot more thought into hydraulics that work with pitch blocks. I am staying in touch with a number of people who have actually built some devices which use hydraulics with pitch blocks. If you would like to join that group get in
touch with me.
Balancing: As long as there is any chance that aliens have landed in my yard and quietly replaced my balancing wheels with some that are hypersensi-tive, I’m not going to say that most OEMs have quit
balancing props. What I will say is that I am adding a belt machine to my line just for balancing, as it is becoming a bigger part of
the work I do here.
Don’t waste your win-ter: General MacArthur is remembered for saying that “in war, all disasters can be explained by two words: “too late””. Work hard now to be prepared. Inspiration is as close as the short order cook at places like Waffle House. Like us, the cook gets his work in spurts and surges. If he or she is any good they make it look easy. If they are the least bit dis-organized you can watch things fall apart. Spending money for improvements when your business is slow takes guts. After 27 years it still makes me nervous, but I know I have
to do it.

Quicksilver launches con-sumer website Jul 18, 2012
Quicksilver, a division of Mercury Marine with a reputation for manufacturing premium marine parts and accessories and engine care products for more than 60 years, this week unveiled its new website at www.quicksilver-products.com. The website fea-tures Quicksilver parts and acces-sories for marine applications and engine oil and care products for powersports applica-tions. General service and main-tenance procedures – including maintenance and storage prepa-ration checklists for outboards and sterndrives – can be found on the site and applied to any en-gine, not just a Mercury. “Only a small population of the boating community knows that Quicksilver is part of the Mercury Marine fam-ily,” said Heidi Stark, manager of aftermarket products at Mercury Marine. “This website will make consumers aware that Quicksilver is the Mercury Marine retail brand that can be found in aisles at many of the nation’s largest retail stores.” The website will con-tinue to expand with additional Quicksilver product information and more service and mainte-nance procedures. The Quicksil-ver brand offers products for rec-reational marine engines, per-sonal watercraft, ATVs, motorcy-cles and snowmobiles.

Across the United States, the Boy Scouts
of America has awarded more than a
thousand Welding merit badges since
the badge became available in February
of this year. On September 15, more than
a dozen Scouts gathered at the world
headquarters of Miller Electric Mfg. Co.
to earn their badges.
Scouts from eastern Wisconsin and up-
per Michigan assembled at Miller on a
perfect Saturday to go through the BSA-
prescribed and American Welding Soci-
ety (AWS)-approved course.
The day began with the Scouts conven-
ing near the American flag and reciting
the Pledge of Allegiance. Then, the em-
ployee volunteers from Miller instructed
the young Scouts on welding safety and
the importance of safety vigilance at all
times when in the shop.
Next it was on to the proper torch tech-
niques using the latest in top of the line
Miller equipment. For many of the
scouts this was the first time they’d tried
welding. Scouts like Matt Messing of
Troop 606 found the first opportunity to
strike an arc and give welding a try was a
stimulating experience that sparked
thoughts about the future.
“I think welding is a much-needed job
skill and its applications are endless,”
said Messing. “I really enjoyed the kind-
ness of the instructors and their enthusi-
asm for their work. I like welding be-
cause it’s a simple idea, but it is still very
challenging. I definitely need more prac-
tice.”
The Scouts, by virtue of the traditions of
camping and outdoors activities, are a
hands-on group. Welding and plasma
cutting fit right into the self-made and
self-reliant nature of being a Boy Scout.
“I really liked how it (the program) was
all hands-on. You could look at what you
worked on and get to keep it,” said Ben
Mehn of Troop 615. “Using things with
electric current running through it is
always fun.”
The Scouts were able to fulfill the badge
requirements by the end of the day.
The Boy Scouts need volunteers with
welding experience to help local Scouts
obtain the Welding merit badge. You can

the requirements to become a volunteer

A note from me PLEASE READ !
Over the past 20 conventions I’ve have struggled to find the right words to justify charging the conven-
tion fees that have to be charged.
First of all contrary to popular belief the seminars are not what you are paying the convention fee for.
The hotel charges a rather hefty fee for the use of their floor space and associated equipment. Some 19-
20 years ago I worked out a amicable deal that calls for me to spend the same amount as the rent would
be but trade it off for food and beverage along with other costs like microphones, PA systems, screens,
etc. I’m sure you would rather put this money in your stomach rather that pay it in rent.
Which brings me to how much to charge each attendee. The welcome party is calculated by usage you
know, so much per drink and a cost for the chicken wings, veggies, dips and so forth. The other 2
meals are charged by the plate so if I order based on head count say, 130 plates and 150 show up to eat
then there’s a serious problem of not having enough food. There’s also the early morning coffee, juice,
danish, bagels and such to guess on the consumption. Having coffee and Pepsi products available all
day long certainly adds to this uncertain cost. So I have broken these costs down as close as I can guess
along with the help from the hotel and incorporated a “cushion” factor to arrive at the following.
Welcoming party night $ 61.00 per person
The next day $ 75.00 per person
The final day $ 84.00 per person

PowerTech! Wins Third Consecutive IBEX
LOUISVILLE, Ky., October 3rd,
2012 - The National Marine
Manufacturers Association
(NMMA), jointly, with a jury of
boating industry journalists from
Boating Writers International
(BWI), selected the SaferProp!
by PowerTech! Propellers as
recipient of a 2012 IBEX Innova-
tion Award for Propulsion Parts /
Propellers. This is the first time
in the history of the NMMA’s In-
novation Award that the same
company has received this
award three consecutive years.
BWI and the NMMA presented
the 2012 award at the Interna-
tional Boat Builder's Exhibition
(IBEX) show and conference at
the Kentucky Exposition Center
in Louisville, Kentucky.
The IBEX Innovation Award is
the industry’s highest honor for
innovative and technological ad-
vancement. The award recog-
nizes advancements in OEM
and aftermarket equipment
based on specific criteria: inno-
vative distinction from other
products currently being
manufactured; benefit
to the marine industry
and/or consumer; prac-
ticality; and cost effec-
t i v e n e s s .
The latest PowerTech!
propeller design, named
the SaferProp!, gives
boaters an added
measure of safety with-
out significantly affect-
ing overall performance.
This new design (patent
pending) incorporates smoothly-
radiused leading and trailing
edges that dramatically reduce
the chance of inflicting cutting
wounds, should a person acci-
dentally come in to contact with
the blades at lower speeds.
This propeller is, also, designed
with the cupping technology
used in PowerTech!’s 2011 In-
novation Award winning Power-
Stop! propeller to enhance stop-
ping, reversing, and maneuver-
ing performance.
PowerTech! Propellers has,
now, won three consecutive
IBEX Innovation Awards (2010,
2011, and 2012), a feat that has
never, before, been achieve by
any one, single company. With
over 25 years of innovation
PowerTech! leads the world in
propeller designs/part numbers,
manufacturing more combina-
tions of features than any other
p rope l l e r manufac tu re r .
“To say we are proud of our
third Innovation Award in three
years would be an understate-
ment, we are ecstatic,” said
PowerTech! president, Steve
Powers. “Beyond awards, how-
ever,” he continued, “we think
the SaferProp!, and products
like it, serve a greater purpose,
trying to make boating a safer,
more enjoyable pastime for gen-
erations of boaters to come.”

shop. He started that job 21 years ago
and due to frustration he quit when the
owner wouldn’t buy any pitch blocks,.
He then went back to welding and me-
chanic work (self-employed) this time.
Then 2 years later he was talked into do-
ing prop repair by the local Yamaha
dealer and have been doing it ever since
then. “I joined the NMPA in 2006 but
never attended a convention until 2009,
this was a mistake on my part,” “ I
should went when I joined up. I would
be a lot farther ahead now if I had. Better
late than never, I also graduated from
high school 12 years late.”

NMPA welcomes another new
Board Member Ricky Besmehn
Ricky is 32 years old, he
been married to his wife
Jessi for 9 years we have 3
kids Carter (8), Landon
(4), and Macy (1.5).
He was born and raised in
Brainerd Minnesota. After
high school he went to the
local college for a degree
welding and fabricating.
During that time my dad
gave me a couple of his props to weld up. In
2000 I started Lakes Area Welding & Propel-
ler and did fabricating and odd welding repair
jobs, after a year or so he started getting into
the propeller repair and decided to concen-
trate his business more to the propeller repair
side of things so he did as much research on
propeller repair that I could find. I basically
learned prop repair from trial and error and
joined the NMPA to learn more.
He has been going to the conventions each
year and has been able to learn more and
more every year, acquiring the latest tools to
help make the job easier and faster. Ricky got
certified in aluminum and stainless in 2005
and 2006. Since doing that they have been
recognized as one of the top producers in pro-
peller repair and sales in Minnesota. Since
2006 our business has grown 25% to 35% a
year. In 2007 we changed our name to
Brainerd Propeller. Ricky credits a lot of our
business success to the NMPA and its mem-
bers for the resources and knowledge.
