Can Leadership Memphis find within itself the courage to do more for our community? I think you have to look no further than our new mission statement. Leadership Memphis prepares and mobilizes leaders to work together for the good of the whole community.

DEAR ALUMNI AND SUPPORTERS, You know, every year I pick one word to focus me and to focus Leadership Memphis for the year. Several years ago the word was “intentionality”. And Leadership Memphis was more intentional than ever when it came to fulfilling our mission. Last year the word was “why”. And Leadership Memphis was constantly asking that question – “Why should Leadership Memphis exist?” and “Why should we do each of the programs and initiatives we do?” Gut wrenching questions, but important questions. Why? This past spring our board of directors engaged in a most amazing strategic planning process. Now, before you roll your eyes, I will tell you it was amazing because just six months later it is already producing results beyond our expectations. The board found themselves challenged with questions like “who” (who is LM?) and “what” (what are our

priorities) and “how” (how does Leadership Memphis move to the next level?). They rose to the challenge, addressed each and every question, and all the pieces are falling into place at an accelerating rate. While I’ve always known that language is powerful, I am reminded how powerful a single word can be. A word can unite people or divide them. A single word can move armies, or bring us to our knees. A word can give us hope, or kindle a dream, or make a difference in someone’s life. For me, my word this year is “courage.” I want to have the courage to say “yes” and the courage to say “no” and the courage to say “I don’t know.” I want the incredible Leadership Memphis board of directors to continue to display the courage to be bold in fulfilling our mission, while also being good stewards of our resources. I want the LM staff to have the courage to be themselves, to trust each other and to be extraordinary examples of courage to our class participants, alumni and all those we touch. All my life I have been fascinated by people who have faced unimaginable hardships, life-altering events, and the toughest decisions. They all had a level of courage I’ve always wondered if I could find within myself if facing what they faced. Well, here we are in Memphis, Tennessee, facing some incredibly difficult challenges as a community. Can Leadership Memphis find within itself the courage to do more for our community? I think you have to look no further than our new mission statement. Our new mission…”Leadership Memphis prepares and mobilizes leaders to work together for the good of the whole community.” That takes courage to say. It takes even more courage to live up to what it means. I’m committed. Leadership Memphis is committed. If you have the courage to join us in fulfilling our mission, please let me know. We could use someone just like you.

Sincerely,

President/CEO Leadership Memphis

The Criminal / Juvenile Justice program is designed to connect and strengthen leaders involved in all aspects of criminal justice and is being offered for the first time in Memphis by Leadership Memphis in 2015 through a partnership with American Leadership Forum (ALF).

Criminal justice has gotten a lot of attention recently, and each day we read about challenges that perhaps could be approached more effectively if leaders in the various segments of the criminal justice community really knew and trusted each other.

By focusing on the skills of dialogue and providing time for self-reflection, the process builds trust among people who think differently so they can then think together and approach issues with deeper understanding of each other’s goals.

Thanks to an anonymous 3-year $225,000 donation, the inaugural class will be comprised of professionals working within the criminal / juvenile justice industry. For more information about the Criminal / Juvenile Justice Program, please contact Leadership Memphis President / CEO, David Williams, at [email protected] or at the office (901) 278-0016.

Leadership Memphis is seeking up-and-coming leaders who are passionate about Memphis and ready to cultivate a greater Memphis. The Spring FastTrack Program 2015 for emerging leaders is set to begin January 17, 2015. Applications are being accepted through December 31, 2014.

FastTrack is a community leadership development program that builds on each participant’s personal leadership skills and expands their Community IQ. Participants gain a stronger understanding of how to cultivate local relationships to develop and enhance Memphis through an increased understanding of self and community, experiential learning processes and exposure to high-profile community leaders and organizations. It is a 40-hour program delivered over a three month semester. Tuition for the FastTrack Program is $1,250. There are flexible payment schedules available as well as a limited number of scholarships.

For more information about the FastTrack Program, contact Senior Director, Tori Taylor, at [email protected] or by calling (901) 278-0016.

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR 2015 SPRING FASTTRACK PROGRAM

As a member of the Fall Fast-Track class of 2012, the lessons and friendships I gained have proven to be invaluable. FastTrack imparted leadership skills that have not only helped me grow as a professional, but also as a change agent for the city of Memphis.

I thought I knew a lot about Memphis…then I went through FastTrack. It was incredible learning more about education, poverty, racism and taxes than I had ever imagined. I was able to learn why things in Memphis are the way they are, giving me a unique perspective of the community over many of my peers outside of the class.- Taylor Oaks, FastTrack Spring 2014

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR 2016 EXECUTIVE CLASSNominations are being accepted for the 2016 Leadership Memphis Executive Class. This creates a powerful forum for networking, shared learning, and personal growth. For more information about the Executive Program, contact Senior Director, Tori Taylor, at [email protected] or by calling (901) 278-0016.

MOBILIZING MEMPHIS

The Kresge Foundation has awarded the Memphis Talent Dividend (MTD) $250,000 over two years to build capacity, hire its first full-time coordinator and establish Parent Education Resource Centers (PERC). The Memphis Talent Dividend, a collaborative of 100 community partners focuses on increasing post-secondary access and attainment, is an action initiative of Leadership Memphis.

The Memphis Talent Dividend started in December 2009 with a part-time volunteer and together with its partners has seen the post-secondary attainment rate for the Memphis area increase by 11.4 percent from year one to year three for degrees

awarded, according to the National Talent Dividend.

In October at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., hosted by CEOS for Cities and the National Talent Dividend Network, Memphis was recognized as having ranked 13th out of 57 cities for the most improvement in post-secondary attainment for the past three years. The Kresge and Lumina Foundations were instrumental in the national initiative.

Leadership Memphis stepped up to convene the Memphis Talent Dividend when cities across the country were organizing their efforts to increase post-secondary attainment, particularly with an

emphasis in aligning those efforts with workforce development. MTD is currently co-chaired by Tomeka Hart, Vice President, African-American Community Partnerships, Teach For America and Dr. Betty Sue McGarvey, President, Baptist College of Health Sciences.

It is estimated that 63 percent of all new jobs created between 2010 and 2018 will require a college degree or some sort of certification. Without an educated and trained workforce, it is difficult to attract, develop and retain businesses and jobs.

The Memphis Talent Dividend director, Bernice Butler, has positioned the collaborative and

Expanding opportunities for more Memphians to enroll and succeed in post-secondary options is vital to building a strong economy. The Kresge Foundation and Turley Family Foundation are investing in Leadership Memphis action initiatives to help achieve this goal.

partners to move forward with four strategies determined by MTD partners:

1. Prepare students for and successfully enroll in college (Access)

2. Help students stay in college and complete their studies (Completion)

3. Assist workers in returning to college to complete their studies (Re-entry)

4. Increase African American Male Achievement

Working together to increase post-secondary access and attainment, the Memphis Talent Dividend recently launched a community-wide FAFSA campaign, ‘FAFSA Memphis’ with a comprehensive website on all things college access for local high school seniors and their parents. FAFSA stands for ‘Free Application for Federal Student Aid’ and any student seeking financial aid or student loans must have a completed FAFSA form filed with the federal government. Included on the website (www.fafsamemphis.com) are multiple community-wide events to help better prepare students and their parents for their next step towards post-secondary completion.

TURLEY FAMILY FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES $25,000 MATCH GRANT FOR LM SUCCESS HIGH SCHOOLSThe Turley Family Foundation has announced an exciting 1:1 matching gift to provide up to 400 college and career tours for Leadership Memphis SUCCESS High Schools students. For each dollar donated up to $25,000 the Turley Family Foundation will match it dollar for dollar for a total of $50,000.

Leadership Memphis has launched our first crowdfunding campaign and with help from alumni and people throughout the community we expect to hit our goal and make sure 400 young people have the chance to see the kind of choices they have among jobs and among schools.

Students attending the college tours will learn first-hand about our great local and regional colleges, from 4-year degree institutions to vocational and technical certification options.

Last year 208 students participated in Leadership Memphis College and Career Tours.

“This trip was an eye-opening experience. It showed me the importance of higher education, and let me know it is okay to be nervous about going to college. It also opened my eyes to how important that even the smallest scholarship is,” said T. Briggs, 2014 Senior Class President at Melrose High School after attending last year’s college tours.

With your help, 400 high school seniors will begin their path in obtaining the college degree at the college of their choice. Click on the ‘College and Career Tours 1:1 Match’ image at www.leadershipmemphis.org to donate today.

Graduate Memphis, the College Resource Center expanded their space and hours of operation to accommodate more adults and help reach a greater portion of the community. If you are interested in attending or returning to college, or you know someone who is, or you would like for us to work with your company, faith community, neighborhood or group/organization, please visit the Graduate Memphis website at www.graduatememphis.org or contact Joya Smith, Advising and Retention Coordinator at [email protected] or by calling the College Resource Center at (901) 415-2774.

MOBILIZING MEMPHIS (CONTINUED)GM staff also celebrated several adults who have made the rewarding decision to return to post-secondary education at a Student Success Celebration.

Adult learner, Vicki Bynum (left) shared her success story with fellow future graduates. Each adult student in attendance had the opportunity to tell the room about his or her experience in returning to college as an adult and how Graduate Memphis helped them achieve their goals.

LM SUCCESS HIGH SCHOOLS INDUCT 315 LEADERSHIP CLUB STUDENTS & SEEK ADVISORS FOR GAPDuring October and November, 315 students were inducted into eight Leadership Memphis SUCCESS High School Leadership Clubs. The leadership clubs are one of three components of the LM SUCCESS High Schools organized with the intent of developing young leaders and preparing them for post-secondary access and success.

Members of the Executive Program Class of 2015 are running the leadership clubs as part of their service learning projects with the SUCCESS High Schools. Executive Class participants are moving the needle on five key indicators that have a direct correlation between graduation and college enrollment for the students including taking college entrance exams, completion of the FAFSA form, applying for scholarships, applying for college, technical training path or the military, and community service.

If you are an alumnus of any of the eight LM SUCCESS High

Schools, or know someone who is, or if you would like to be involved with the work of our SUCCESS High Schools, contact Program Coordinator, Jacqueline Oselen at [email protected]. LM SUCCESS High Schools include Kingsbury, East, Trezevant, Hamilton, Kirby, Melrose, Fairley, and George Washington Carver.

In correlation with the Leadership Clubs, SUCCESS High Schools also invite community leaders to serve as advisors for students through the Graduation Advisory Program (GAP). GAP advisors agree to guide a student during their senior year, as well as their first year out of high school. Much of the advising is done by text, email and phone.

During the 2013-14 academic year, 418 seniors from eight high schools completed Personal Post-Secondary Plans through GAP and needed an advisor. We did not have enough volunteers. This year the goal is to have 600 students complete their plans and we obviously need even

more volunteers. If you are interested in becoming a GAP Advisor, you can sign-up on our website at leadershipmemphis.org, or call Robin Walker at (901) 278-0016 for more information.

The work of Leadership Memphis “to mobilize and prepare leaders to work together for the good of the whole community” is powerful.

Over and over education is the key to taking our community to the next level. There are many organizations working with early childhood, others with elementary and middle-school students, and Leadership Memphis has zeroed in on helping high schools students and adults access and attain college degrees or post-secondary certificates. This has made Leadership Memphis a learning and doing organization.

NEW YEAR MORE WAYS TO ENGAGE WITH FELLOW ALUMNI

Throughout 2014, Leadership Memphis alumni sold out various Alumni Engagement Events including ‘Stickfly’ at the new Hattiloo Theatre in Overton Square and touring the historic Victorian Village. In an effort to maximize engagement opportunities in 2015, the Alumni Engagement Committee will be hosting monthly events for alumni. From networking events to sneak peeks at some of Memphis’ newest businesses and redevelopments, these monthly events will engage Leadership Memphis alumni across all of the programs and allow more opportunities to connect with each other. “The monthly Alumni Engagement events are going to be a great addition to our continued learning experience for our alumni and will allow them to see things in the

community that they might have never known about or been involved with,” said Jared Bulluck, Director of Community and Alumni Engagement at Leadership Memphis. The first Alumni Engagement Event of 2015 is a Fireside Chat with Shelby County Mayor, Mark Luttrell, on January 15 from 6 - 8 pm at Playhouse On The Square. “These are exciting times for Leadership Memphis and the year 2015 will go down in history as one of our best years yet. We are grateful to each of you who have volunteered your time, talent, and resources to ensure the success of our numerous programs and projects,” said Sandra K. Walls, Alumni Engagement Committee Chair. The Alumni Engagement Events are free to attend but you must RSVP since some events have limited capacity on our website at leadershipmemphis.org

Starting January 2015, the Leadership Memphis Alumni Engagement Series will host monthly events.
