NOVEMBER 16 1979 Fuller offers perspectives of Black Americans by Kurt Amend On Monday evening, November 12, a sm all collection of students, administrators, and interested Appleton residents heard the articulate, passionate, m ilitant, yet honest words of Howard Fuller, Assos. Director-College D iv ., Educational Opportunity Program, Marquette University. look at the recruitment and retention of non-whites, specifically blacks, in colleges and universities. Fuller set the foundation of his address with a brief, historical summary of the roots of racial oppression in America. "One has to look at Africa first; this is “There are masses of unemployed black people; they are the last hired, first fired during periods of economic crisis. During such periods, racism raises its head more than at any other time.” Fuller’s talk, sponsored by the Multi-cultural Affairs Committee and the Center for Ethnic Affairs, progressed from his particular blend of economics, American history, politics, and philosophy. He spoke of the current racial and economic dilemma of non whites in America, ending with a where we came from. The roots of our heritage and roots of our oppression are there,” Fuller began. ‘‘The mercantalist Europeans came to Africa for economic reasons, first for trade and then to rip us off. In tim e, the best thing for them was the en slavement of us.” “ Yet the development of slavery,’’ Fuller continued, “conflicted with Christianity. Consequently black people were derided as heathens and it became the slave-traders’ Christian responsibility to save the slaves, to save them from themselves. White people began to practice a philosophy of white superiority, and racism developed.” Fuller stressed the notion that economic exploitation of Africans preceded the development of racism. The ideas of any group, he postulated, are a reflection of the m aterial reality of that period of time. The material basis for racism , then, is blatant economic exploitation of blacks by whites. From the origins of slavery, Fuller traced a history of racial oppression up to the present day in America. He stated, “One Warch I n s t a l l a t i o n D a y p r o c l a i m e d On Thursday, November 29, Richard Warch will be officially installed as president of Lawrence University in a special convocation at 10:30 a.m . When a student goes to CM L in searth of assistance, he is first given a guideline sheet stating what is and is not provided. Among these guidelines: —We provide peer tutors (LU students) who will assist you in classwork preparation. —We provide an office coun selor who will listen, work with you, refer, share ideas, think of alternatives, discuss con sequences. and assist you in making your own decisions and solving your problems. We offer 2 hours per week of free tutoring services per student for each subject area If you elect to take CM L for partial or full credit, we w ill make the necessary arrangements in the CML office, with faculty ap proval. - We do request that you take full advantage of the faculty and adm inistrative people who could help you with your course work and decision making. We cannot proofread, rewrite, or edit your papers. The student is then asked to fill out a tutee application form which asks whether the student has met with the professor, whether the student has missed classes, his present grade, and other information He is in terviewed by Ms. Tasch, told to see his professor if he has not already done so, and is then paired with a tutor. cont. on page 1 No paper Due to the fact that the over worked. underpaid and in at least one case, starving Lawrentian staff members have not slept or eaten since September first, there will not be a Lawrentian next week Publication w ill resume on Friday. Lawrentian: Do you think it is conceivable that Jimmy Petran, the talented but left-handed Viking quarterback, finally came into his own during the last four games of the football season due to a renewed social life which enhanced his confidence in scoring abilityf

Lawrentian: It has been suggested that perhaps the Lawrence University sports program, specifically football, has at times exceeded the parameters of sportsmanship with an excessive emphasis on winning. Are you of the opinion that last week's humiliation of Carleton 52-7 for the Midwest Conference Championship was within the bounds of good sportsmanship ?
