Principal’s Update: We’re down to our last two weeks here at Laguna and neither of those weeks has a full 5 days. We have been reminding students during our morning announcement time to check Powerschool for missing assignments and to speak with their teachers if they have any tests to retake or make up. Students should have taken care of these things this. Please take the time this weekend to ask your student what they need to turn in next week so that they may show their teacher what they know and have it recorded in the grade book. Our SBAC testing is mostly finished. We are impressed with the resilience of our students as the testing schedule can be very challenging. Teachers discussed the testing schedule at our staff meeting on Wednesday and we are looking at ways of tweaking the schedule next year to ensure we provide ample time for testing while reducing stress on students. Teachers are collecting anecdotal information from their students to help guide us in our decision making. Speaking of information, we also would love to have input from you, our parents. We ask that you fill out a short survey we will use to craft our goals for next year. There are opportunities to give more feedback after each question if you wish, or you can just click on your answer. We appreciate you taking your time to give us feedback on what is working well and on where we can continue to improve. Thank you to the 100 people who have filled out the survey so far. We would love to have at least 200 more (this newsletter is sent to over 900 people each week) if possible to give us a more comprehensive sample size. Around School:

Thanks to the families who came out for the One Cool Earth and

Laguna Middle School family cooking night. Families learned

about our school garden, nutrition and made lemon hummus!

Our Laguna Middle School Choir with the Concert and Chamber Choirs of SLOHS put on

an amazing show on Tuesday at the Mission in San Luis Obispo. The audience was treated to

a wide variety of songs from contemporary pop to traditional Gaelic pieces. Our Lancer choir

sounded outstanding as always and there were incredible solo performances (one by Andrew

Moersdorf) and beautiful ensemble pieces.

Our 8th grade students visited SLO High this week. Students

Toured the campus and heard from the principals, students and

counselors. They participated in the senior assembly and had a

“full circle” moment for the high school with the outgoing seniors

celebrating their post-high school plans while welcoming in the

incoming class.

The student council recognized its outgoing officers at their final

meeting of the year. Jenson Wright, Mark Rourke and Gia Anselmo

have done a great job of leading our student council this year. We will

miss their leadership, but are excited for them move on to high school!

Congratulations to Mr. Ou! He was recognized at our last school

board meeting as Laguna Middle School’s teacher of the year.

Congratulations also to Ms. Ahearn for receiving the President’s

Award from the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. High School Memorial

Scholarship Fund. Ms. Ahearn was a recipient of this scholarship in high

school and was recognized by the foundation for her extraordinary

service to the students and families of SLO.

Thank you to Bonnie Smith who was one of our

volunteers honored at our volunteer tea this week.

Bonnie volunteers in our library and always has a

smile and a kind word for others. We are so

appreciative to all of our volunteers who do so

much for Laguna.

Athletic Physicals Information: SLOHS will be hosting their sports physical night on Wednesday, May 29 from 6-8pm in the big

gym. There is a suggested donation of $20 for the physicals. Students who are hoping to participate in

school athletics are encouraged to attend on this night. The physical will be good for athletic

participation for the 2019-2020 school year.

PLEASE SEE THE FLYER AT THE END OF THE NEWSLETTER FOR FURTHER

INFORMATION.

As this year comes to an end Laguna Is already beginning to organize our athletic program for next

year. Our vision is to offer physicals for our athletes here at Laguna before school starts, however we

need your help. We need doctors to volunteer to administer the physicals. We would like to have

our Physical Night on Thursday August 15th at 6:00 pm. We will also be needing volunteers to do

blood pressure and check their pulse. If you are interested in helping, please contact

[email protected] or [email protected]. Thank you once again for supporting athletics at Laguna.

TRACK AND FIELD REMINDERS: All uniforms should be washed, dried and returned to Mr. Hoyt by June 3rd.

Around School (continued): We had our student recognition lunch on Tuesday. Teacher selected students from their classes

to be honored for their scholarship and citizenship. Students were treated to a lunch from Mr.

Pickles and got to spend some quality time with their teachers.

Kindness ROCKS! Is the message our yearbook is spreading throughout the campus with their

kindness rocks. The decision was made to make individual rocks, with quotes matched, for

every single staff member on campus. They also honored our Lead Custodian Gary Edmonson

by cleaning up the quad for him while he got to sit and enjoy his lunch! We wanted to thank

Gary for all his amazing work here every day, he is the BEST!

PTA News: PARENT HELP NEEDED FOR 8th GRADE END OF YEAR DANCE Parents who would like to help out with the 8th grade dance, we have many opportunities for you to

be helpful without ever leaving the comfort of your home! Our decorating committee is looking for

decorations for this year’s theme (we like to keep it a secret from the kids…) and are asking that

parents use the signup genius linked below to provide decorations to our committee.

As we get closer to our event on June 6, we will need parents to help with setup and teardown- it’ll be

easy and fun, we promise! (ok, maybe more easy than fun, but it won’t take long and our kids will

love it!). We’ll also be sending out a signup genius for food donations later next week. Thank you for

your support! It’s going to be a great night for our kids
