President’s Message

Happy Summer Time!

It’s summer time again and so far we have barely hit 100s a few times this year.

Let’s see what August is hiding for us. Summer is also the fun time— daytime

is longer, kids are out of school, and our lakes, pools and water parks are desti-

nations for the summer fun. As you spend time with your friends and family

enjoying summer activities, take advantage of this time to promote our indus-

try and educate people about what we do. You never know, maybe you will

spark an interest with a teenager to seek a future career in the water industry!

Show pride in your contributions, and use this time to educate people about

water and waterworks.

Our Executive Committee has been actively working on preparations and scheduling future events. The Pro-

gram Committee has completed reviews of the submitted abstracts for the bi-monthly meetings. The annual

Drinking Water Seminar, or as it will be named from now on, the Robert F. Pence Drinking Water Seminar, is

ramping up preparations for this year. Topics will cover the most recent water challenges and interests. The

Members’ Appreciation Day was a great success. Members showed their skills in bowling and laser tag. Fi-

nally, the Texas Water 2017 abstracts submittal is open, with the deadline fast approaching. Save the date on

your calendar and consider submitting an abstract.

If you would like to become involved in one of our committees, you can find contact information for each one

at the back of The Lake. Thank you for your support of our Chapter, and see you at the next meeting.

Announcing the Robert F. Pence Drinking Water Seminar

The NCT TAWWA is proud to announce the dedication of the annual October Drinking

Water Seminar to Bob Pence, of Freese and Nichols, in an effort to honor his numerous

contributions to the water industry in North Texas. The seminar is hereby called the Rob-

ert F. Pence Drinking Water Seminar as a tribute to Bob’s generous support of the Semi-

nar Committee in providing access to Fort Worth’s Petroleum Club as a venue.

Thank you for your continued support Bob, and we look forward to seeing you this fall!

Member Appreciation Night

Our 2016 NCT TAWWA Member Appreciation Event was a rousing success! This family-friendly event

held at iT’Z in Euless featured activities such as bowling, mini-bowling, bumper cars, laser tag, and a pizza

Utility Spotlight—The City of Bedford

The City of Bedford is located in northeast Tar-

rant County, adjacent to Fort Worth. The main

supply of water for Bedford’s 45,000+ residents is

from the Trinity River Authority, with a portion

of the drinking water supplemented by ground-

water wells.

The Bedford Public Works Department maintains approximately 167 miles of water mains, three water towers

with 5 million gallons of storage capacity, and two water well pumping stations, each with 1 mgd capacity.

Bedford was recently awarded conservation funding for two water main

renewal projects through the State Water Implementation Fund for Texas

(SWIFT). Project one consists of six locations with a project cost of 1.1 mil-

lion dollars. Project two consists of four locations, one of which adjacent to

Texas Health Hospital, with an overall project cost of 1.2 million dollars. In

the next few months the City will be receiving bids on two additional water

main renewal projects. All current projects have been designed in house by

City engineering staff. This water renewal program has the goal of reduc-

ing water loss through leaks and pipe breaks. Nearly three-fourths of the

City’s water mains will be replaced over the next ten years as part of the

funding application.

Additionally, the City intends to upgrade outdated water meters with new

Automatic Meter Readers (AMRs) to improve meter accuracy. The AMR

will also have the advanced technology to alert the City (and ultimately con-

sumer) of a break on the customer side, expediting the repair process and

minimizing water loss. In September 2016, Bedford will be seeking bids for

the AMR project, which will consist of replacing 15,000+ water meters and replacing large water vaults.

June’s meeting of the North Central Texas Chapter of TAW-

WA, held at the Texas Star Conference Center in Euless, was

headlined by Dr. Evan Tromble’s talk covering the evaluation

of water resources alternatives. The meeting was the first one

presided over by the chapter’s new president, Mohammad

Bayan, who took over from Theo Chan. After thanking Theo

and the rest of the previous year’s members of the executive

committee for their service, Mohammad introduced his fellow

2016-2017 executive committee members and committee

chairs (see Page 7).

In his opening remarks to attendees, Mohammad also ex-

pressed interest in growing the organization’s membership profile, specifically to include more members

from the manufacturers’ representatives community. Mohammad views their input in the organization miss-

ing among the strong representation from the public and consulting communities. Mr. Bayan yielded the po-

dium to Helen Cantril Dulac, the Education and Outreach Committee Chair. Helen announced the chapter’s

increased social media presence and their new Instagram account, which she urged members to follow

(@nct_awwa).

Stefi Massey introduced the lunch program’s speaker, Dr. Tromble, who works out of Garver’s Oklahoma

City Office, whose presentation discussed water resources development alternatives evaluation in Oklahoma.

Dr. Tromble developed a model which would aid in the preliminary selection of wa-

ter resource development based on projected demands, existing infrastructure, and

water availability and quality. His talk included several case studies involving utili-

ties of various sizes and the implementation of the model to yield a recommendation

as to whether utilizes should establish a new water supply, via aquifer or surface wa-

ter development, or consider reuse to fulfill their future demands.

Thank you again Dr. Tromble for your time, your presentation, and your work to

make prudent decisions with such a precious resource.
