LHS Foundation Overview

• Non-profit 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt organization since 2002

• Programs designed to allow donors to direct donations to the areas that are most important to them

• LHSF has provided more than $11,000,000 in capital improvement projects, scholarships and grants

Since 2002, we have been able to provide the

school with:

• more than $1,270,000 in administered

scholarships

• more than $1,250,000 in grants

• over 150 books endowed annually

• $9,000,000 multi-purpose stadium

Newsletter Ka Leo O Ke Kahua O Lahainaluna

• 2016 annual newsletter went out to nearly 3,800 Lahainaluna supporters. Total revenue generated was $11,500.

• Special thanks to Lahaina Hongwanji Mission and the Lahaina Hongwanji Buddist Women’s Assoc., students & staff from Lahainaluna for providing facilities and volunteer hours to process the newsletter for mailing.

• Approximately 55 hours of labor to process this issue.

Legends of Lahainaluna • The 5th Legends of Lahainaluna will be held on

November 9, at the Pioneer Inn.

This year, former staff member

Lori Gomez-Karinen will be

honored as the individual

award recipient.

Na Hoaloha ‘Ekolu will be honored as the business

category recipient.

Samuel Mookini, the former LHS music

teacher who put the alma mater to sheet music,

was chosen to receive the posthumous category

award.

SBS Tournament of Champions

The Foundation is one of six beneficiaries of this annual tournament, held in Kapalua.

•This January, the Foundation received a total of $62,000 and was able to distribute more than $20,000 in grant money to 8 clubs and sports teams at Lahainaluna.

Scholarships

The Foundation distributed :

•$186,000 in scholarships at the 2017 awards ceremony

• 62 student scholarships and 2 teacher scholarships.

To date, the Foundation has distributed more than $1,270,000 in scholarship money.

Grants The Foundation distributed more than $29,000 in grant monies between November 2015 –September 2017.

Since 2002, the Foundation has distributed $1,250,000 in grants to nearly every club,

group and sports team on campus.

The golf cart was donated to the LHS

Security team in August 2017.

Charity Walk

The Foundation participated for the first time

in the Visitor Industry Charity Walk, which

was held on May 13, 2017 at War Memorial.

• The Charity Walk enables non-profits to

raise money through a well-publicized event

and provides a matching fund component.

• The Foundation raised nearly $25,000 for

the event in our inaugural year and received

an additional $6,000 in matching funds

President’s Remarks

2017 Class Challenge •10th Annual Event

•Held on July 14th at Hawaii Prince Golf Course, Oahu

•Raised $17,000 in support of the mission of LHSF

•Last event with current organizers; Earl Ichimura, Eric Okazaki & Michael Miyamoto.

Stadium Update

• On July 29, a stadium workday was

conducted. Volunteers from the board, the

Hyatt Regency and Luna JV football team;

• Cleaned the stadium

• Cleared weeds

• Replaced bleacher nameplates

• Cleaned granite pavers

Later that week, Lanny Tihada and a crew

from Ka’anapali Land Mgmt cleared weeds

from the makai slope.

The stadium is still under the auspices of the

Foundation. We are currently waiting for

permit approvals so that we can begin the

construction of the concession building. Once

complete, the Foundation will be able to

transfer the stadium to the State of Hawaii.

Current Projects

Lahainaluna Cemetery

The Foundation began its cemetery

restoration program in July, 2017. Volunteers

from the board, Lahaina Canoe Club and

Ka’anapali Operations Assn., cleared weeds,

painted perimeter posts and chains, and

prepped for gravel walkways.

Alternative Learning Center

The ALC is a job-study program for

students who do not excel in the typical

classroom setting. This successful program

is conducted in a donated building which

has reached capacity. The Foundation is

working towards providing an additional

classroom.
