KA LEO O KE KAHUA O LAHAINALUNA NEWSLETTER OF THE LAHAINALUNA HIGH SCHOOL FOUNDATION DECEMBER 2008 www.LahainalunaHighSchoolFoundation.com Season’s Greetings and warm Aloha from the Lahainaluna High School Foundation. This has been quite a year, and it seems that every time you pick up a newspaper or turn on the television, bad news abounds for our financial markets, largely due to the housing and resulting credit crisis. Difficult economic times generally translate to less giving to non-profit organizations, so we are pleased and grateful that you have continued to support Lahainaluna despite these challeng- ing economic times. We also look forward to new leadership of our country, and hope that they can stay focused on educational needs and priorities for our country. Recently the Hawaii State Department of Education announced budget cuts of over $96 million over the next two years. This could result in a serious shortage of text books, computers, learn- ing materials, and programs. As a Foundation, we pledge to stay committed to providing a superior high school experience for all students. We are still motivated about bringing a multi- purpose stadium to the school, and will also address needs by doing our part to provide the school with the tools needed to achieve success in the classroom. It will be a particularly chal- lenging year, and we hope that you will find it in your hearts to assist us with these efforts. In January, we will be fully involved with volunteer operations during the Mercedes-Benz Championship held at Kapalua. Please support this event by attending this golf tournament, and putting your name on a silent auction item, or watching the event on The Golf Channel. Finally, we encourage you to visit our web site noted above and discover even more information about our on-going programs. You can now view our Strategic Plan completed this quarter by your Board of Directors and associated committees. A lot of work has gone into this project, and this plan will serve as a guide for our organization during the foreseeable future. We invite you to be a part of our exciting organization. Mahalo, Rob Shelton, President, LHSF This past August, the LHS Foundation’s Stadium Develop- ment Committee approached The Dowling Company for their expertise and input regarding the stadium project. At that time, the project called for an 8-lane, all-weather track, artificial turf, seating for 3,000 spectators, lights, scoreboard, arrival building, concessions, restrooms, and press box. Our preliminary plans were submitted to 3 different construction firms and initial bids came back as high as $19 million. Our Board and committee members struggled with the challenge of funding a project of this magnitude. It was determined that much of the cost was associated with the existing site constraints, and building an 8 lane track required additional millions of dollars in construction costs due to the need for additional retaining walls, movement of an existing road and bridge, and other infrastructure improvements. We are concentrating on site constraints and opportunities. Our plan is to deliver a quality venue that will allow for all previously planned activities and athletic events. Final plans for the stadium will be completed by Lahainaluna grad Dennis Harmon, of Harmon Architects, in approximately six months. Next will be the permitting and bidding process. The LHS Foundation’s Stadium Development Committee will continue working closely with our State legislators in order to solicit the desired financial support of the State through obligation bonds. The committee will also continue their work to identify po- tential donors, submit grant applications, solicit corporate sponsors and work to keep the community involved though events like the Inaugural Re-do the Imu Golf Tournament and the Pre-Season Football Tailgate Party. Most recently, the stadium project received national attention on the www.USAFootball.com website (accessible from our website). In addition, ESPN’s Neil Everett will co-announce the Luna’s pre-season exhibition game on August 29, 2009. He will also appear at the Tailgate Party preceding the game as well as attend a fundraising dinner that weekend. Make plans to attend, it should be a fun weekend! Season’s Greetings! Another Message from Jeff Rogers… With six months now as the Development Coordinator with the LHS Foundation, I share some ideas to improve our communications and ensure our overall effectiveness as a non-profit organization whose success is crucial to the improvement of Lahainaluna High School. COMMUNICATE FASTER: The need for faster communication between the Foundation and its supporters has never been more evident. That means email and website communication. INVOLVE MORE SUPPORTERS: With the Stadium Project in full swing and the Ka Malu ‘Ulu (Performing Arts Center) on the horizon, the Foundation’s need to involve its supporters is paramount to the success of these two projects. For example, the Founda-tion will be pursuing state funding for the stadium through obligation bonds at the next legislative session. It will take the effort of the entire network of alumni and other LHS supporters to solicit the support of their legislators; through letters, emails, faxes, and phone calls. If we have your email address, we can supply you with the necessary information; who to contact, and when, on a timely basis. REDUCE COSTS: The newsletter is a great way for us to provide you with the latest news, pictures, and recognition in a colorful and effective format. However, you might not be aware of the cost of postage and human power required to deliver the newsletter to you. Perhaps receiving your copy via e-mail, or accessing it through our website might be your contribution to reducing Foundation ex-penses, not to mention helping us in our efforts to ‘go green’. Another way to reduce costs and labor could be through electronic (e-mail) acknowledgement of donations. Instead of the normal hard copy system we now employ, an email notification could be sent to acknowledge your gift. The impact on the bottom line could be important in our efforts to maximize our programs & services at LHS. Please consider these options & let us know of your preferences. REMEMBER: visit the website for the latest news and developments!
