As a chapter, we have been successful in promoting the vision, values and mission of the AADE by providing the forum for the dissemination of practical drilling technology to those employed in the drilling industry through monthly meetings and technical forums on the local and national level. Our generous support of local universities and student chapters is making a difference for all students through scholarships, enhancement of facilities and funded participation in industry events such as LAGCOE and the AADE National Technical Conference. For 2008-2009 the AADE-Lafayette Chapter has donated $66,500 in petroleum engineering scholarships to Nicholls State University, Louisiana State University and University of Louisiana-Lafayette. To date, $123,000 of the $250,000 committed dollars for ULL laboratory upgrades and equipment has had a major impact on the mud lab, with additional improvements slated for the reservoir and production labs. On a national scale the student chapters are expanding, with 15 student chapters at The University of Alaska-Fairbanks, Louisiana State University, Nicholls State, University of Louisiana-Lafayette, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma University , Oklahoma State University , Montana Tech, Wyoming, Colorado School of Mines, University of New Orleans, West Virginia University, Marietta College and a new chapter to take root at New Mexico Tech. Dr. Wiprut has been working on geomechanics problems in the oil and gas industry since 1996. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2000 studying the state of stress, wellbore stability (conventional and underbalanced drilling), and fault leakage in the northern North Sea. Dr. Wiprut has continued to work on similar issues with GMI and has accumulated extensive experience working on geomechanics problems throughout the world. Dr. Wiprut oversees external training activities world-wide for GMI, manages the WellCheck software product, and advises on technical issues for consulting projects. We met an additional goal by executing a proactive publicity campaign to the local media regarding events and dona-tions of the organization. The media campaign began with the Christmas donations to 3 deserving families and continued with petroleum engineering scholarships, well control training for 36 ULL students and the Sporting Clays Tournament to name a few. As mentioned in last month’s newsletter, the Sporting Clays event was the most successful revenue generating event in chapter history. Funds in excess of $115,000 were raised and earmarked for student scholarships and facility upgrades. Sec-ondly, the media campaign may help to dispel some of the negative bias that exists about our industry among the general popu-lation. Thanks to Kristy Bonner with Foster Marketing for acting as champion of the media campaign and making a visible impact within our organization and the community.

Our website continues to improve and will soon offer registration capabilities for meetings and events along with membership renewals and more. Electronic monthly newsletters have proven to be a cost savings strategy for the organization that will translate to more prudent allocation of capital dollars.

We are a volunteer organization with no paid professional staff. Volatile industry activity results in challenges for offi-cers and members to find time to devote to AADE activities and planning. The Lafayette Chapter has witnessed the exodus of many operators to Houston over the years leaving a finite resource base for speakers, officers, and general membership. To help on this front we will attempt to find opportunities to leverage with other local industry organizations such as API, SPE and IADC whose membership bodies many of you compose. Why shouldn’t the working components of the drilling operation share ideas, lessons learned, HSE initiatives and best practices on and off the wellsite? Mike Alexander (Chevron) will serve as the appointed Joint Industry representative spearheading opportunities in this area.

This year we probed the highlights of several topics that affect our industry including access to resources, industry demographics, climate change, the World Energy Outlook and alternative energy sources. As an industry, we must remain in-formed and united on these topics and other key initiatives. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar hosted four regional public meetings in April to discuss the future of offshore energy development on the nation’s Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). Secre-tary Salazar visited New Orleans on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at Tulane University’s McAlister Auditorium. "The purpose of these meetings is to have an open, honest conversation with the American people to solicit the best information possible about an offshore energy plan," Secretary Salazar recently stated. "The Department’s efforts over the next six months to develop a comprehensive offshore energy plan will embrace the President’s commitment to a government that is open and inclusive and that makes decisions based on sound science and the public interest." The MMS seeks public comment on all aspects of the new program for 2010-2015 including energy development and economic and environmental issues in the OCS areas. Comments are also requested on the specific subjects of size, timing, and location of sales and on the issues of buffer zones, revenue-sharing, and the use of unitization to limit the number of structures. Visit the weblinks to comment or for more information. <http://www.doi.gov/ocs/> <http://www.mms.gov/5-year/2010-2015DPPComments.htm>.
