The Kwajalein community gath- ered on the beach last weekend for the annual Fourth of July celebra- tion, which, along with the fireworks display, included games, food, and fun for children and adults alike. Planned, coordinated, and hosted by Community Activities, the day opened with the annual childrens bicycle parade that included 58 partici- pants, all on riding machines draped with flags, stream- ers, and other patriotic para- phernalia. Next, Col. Gary K. McMIllen, USAKA/KMR com- mander, hightlighted open- ing ceremonies, wishing America a happy birthday and commenting on the sign- ers of the Declaration of In- dependence. We meet on this great battlefield of World War II and celebrate the work of 56 men ... patriots, great men of courage and vision ... 56 men dedicated to the prin- ciples of human rights and and the spirit of liberty ... 56 men who would change the course of history. The only thing louder than theconcussion of the fireworks off EmonBeach, was the sound of the �oohs�and �ahhs� from the crowd.

The Kwajalein community gath-ered on the beach last weekend forthe annual Fourth of July celebra-tion, which, along with the fireworksdisplay, included games, food, andfun for children and adults alike.

Planned, coordinated, and hostedby Community Activities, the day

opened with the annualchildren�s bicycle paradethat included 58 partici-pants, all on riding machinesdraped with flags, stream-ers, and other patriotic para-phernalia.

Next, Col. Gary K.McMIllen, USAKA/KMR com-mander, hightlighted open-ing ceremonies, wishingAmerica a happy birthdayand commenting on the sign-ers of the Declaration of In-dependence.

�We meet on this greatbattlefield of World War IIand celebrate the work of 56men ... patriots, great menof courage and vision ... 56men dedicated to the prin-ciples of human rights andand the spirit of liberty ... 56men who would change thecourse of history.�

The Hourglass is named for the insignia of theU.S. Army 7th Infantry Division, which liberatedthe island from the forces of Imperial Japan on Feb4, 1944. The Kwajalein Hourglass is an authorizedArmy newspaper publ ished by the Commander ,USAKA/KMR, under provisions of AR360-81. It isprepared by a Raytheon Range Systems Engineeringeditorial staff under contract DASG60-94-C-0067,printed on an offset press, and distributed Tuesdaysand Fridays to a circulation of 2,500 military per-sonnel, federal employees, contractor workers, andtheir families assigned to the command. The viewsand opinions expressed herein are not necessarilythose of the Department of the Army.

James R. Powell, 48, passed awayJuly 6 at Kwajalein.

Powell came to Kwajalein in June1987 with Global Associates. He alsoworked for Pan Am and JohnsonControls and was with Raytheon KLSwhen he was named chief of theKwajalein Fire Department Jan. 1,1996. Earlier this year, he was namedteam leader in Facilities. In that posi-tion, he worked as department man-ager, Facility Support, managinghousing and special projects.

Arrangements are pending.

Saturday, July 10The Marine Department will run the nor-

mal Saturday ferry schedule, shown at left,and in addition, the schedule shown below.

The Marine Department advises that ev-eryone should catch the earliest possibleferry, so no one have to wait at the DSC forseats on later ferry runs.

Remember the ferry rules:•Badged workers have the first priority.•Passengers are to board and disem-

bark only at the gangway area. Passengerswho are deemed by the captain to pose asafety hazard to the crew, other passengers,or the vessel will not be allowed to board.

•Passengers are never to jump from thepier to the boat, or the boat to the pier.

•Passengers must know where the lifejackets are stowed. If in doubt, ask a crewmember.

•Boats will not be overloaded. Maximumcapacities are: Catamarans, 199 passen-gers; LCMs, 170 passengers.
