    Teen Conference By Holly Camp

On Tuesday, May 8th, thirty-five eighth graders left school on a trip to Olivet Nazarene University for an all day teen conference. I was lucky enough to be one of these eighth graders, so I experienced everything firsthand. It was a truly amazing experience. There were several different workshops students attended about so many valuable things. Most of the workshops weren't just interesting and informative, they were interactive too. It dealt with different things teenagers go through and how to get through them. While the workshops were awesome, the best part of the whole conference was the main speaker. His name is Eddie Slowikowski, and he's awesome. He told us funny, motivational, and sad stories. He also made everyone in the room stand up and dance and have fun.

I strongly suggest that, if you didn't go to the conference, then you should either look Eddie Slowikowski up online or ask someone who did go. You won't regret it. A lot of people who went are saying that he changed them in some way or another, and I totally agree with that. The whole conference was a great experience. It was awesome!

A Kick Across the Pacific By Noah Garrett

A Japanese teenager loses his soccer ball in a devastating tsunami, but it turns up…in Alaska? Misaki Murakani lost his soccer ball in the tsunami that hit last year, but it floated an astonishing 3100 miles across the Pacific Ocean and ended up in the hands of David Baxter, a resident in Middleton Island, Alaska. Murakami said before the tsunami, his friends gave it to him as a goodbye gift because he was transferring to another school. “I never imagined that my ball had reached Alaska,” Misaki said. “I lost everything in the tsunami, so I am delighted.” NOAA was monitoring the debris in the Pacific Ocean and said that in February the debris would end up on the shores of Oregon, Alaska, Canada, and Washington between 2013 and 2014. So this Japanese teenager was very lucky to have someone in Alaska recover his ball and he is very happy and thankful to have his ball back and it’s all because of David Baxter.

    Career Day

    By Liz Jarecki

On April 25, 2012, Bradley Central held our annual career day. We had a total of 19 presenters come this year. A few of the sessions I went to were the Army National Guard, Kankakee Area Career Center, Bradley Police Dept., and the County West Animal Hospital. Even though I didn’t go to their room, our very own Mr. Battrell and Mr. Winkle were also presenters. Mr. Battrell talked about being a musician, and Mr. Winkle talked about being a librarian. Each presenter told us about their job and told us what skills and degrees we would need for the job. Every student received a piece of paper that had spots for each session, with blanks for the salary, degrees, skills, and training for us to fill in throughout each session. The Kankakee Area Career Center was kind enough to donate some things to our school. So each students was to turn those papers in during lunch hours for a chance to win one of those prizes. Even though the prizes weren’t extravagant, Bradley Central appreciates their donation. This year’s Career Day was a success. Hopefully every year is as successful as this one.

    From cutting-edge coaster innovation comes:

    X-Flight! By: Ashlyn Carnes

The X-flight is the first major roller coaster

that Six Flags Great America has built since the Superman: Ultimate Flight in 2003. This roller coaster was designed by Bolliger & Mabillard, the same company that built Raging Bull, Superman, and Batman: The Ride. Construction on this ride began last fall, when employees installed giant support beams that came out of the ground diagonally. Then they started to add on the track to the coaster piece-by-piece.

Now, what is X-Flight you may be wondering? X-flight is a high thrill roller coaster that’s 3,000-feet-long, 120 foot tall, with 12-foot drops, 5 inversions (when a roller coaster flips you upside down and then rights you back up), a sideways roll through a fake air-traffic control tower and can reach speeds up to 55 mph! On top of all this 3 minute thrill ride has to offer it also makes you feel like you are dangling from the wings of an airplane, there is absolutely nothing below you and nothing above you either. This is definitely the ride for roller coaster fans all around the world!

    Bradley Central’s Got Talent

Recently, about 30 Bradley Central students showed off their talents when they participated in the Knights on the Town Talent Show. Audience members were wowed by what they saw. Acts ranged from vocal solos and duets to guitar solos, and a piano solo composed by one of the 8th graders. The rest of the students enjoyed ice cream and candy treats while relaxing and sitting back listening to the talents these students possess. Later in the evening they performed again for family and friends one last time. The following list includes the participants. Jessica Schilaci, Ashlyn Carnes, Destiny May, Andrew Freeman, Nate Scritchlow, Conor Buck, Hailee Hankins, Aubrey Hernandez, Holly Camp Lily Schreiner, Abby Geraci, Taylor Frye, Jillian Ledesma, National Anthem Ensemble, Kerany Salazar, Sarah Finckbone, Mya Hendrix, Macy Murgach, Rianna Lanie, Emily Wendling, Aisa Rogers,Cailyn Dumas, Alexis Crane, Savannah Randles, Brittani Staples, Stephanie Hayes, Hannah Kegg, and Kelsey Daniels. It was a great show!

    Earth Week

    By: Kenzie Chalifoux

    • Recycling  one  aluminum  can  saves  enough  energy  to  run  a  TV  for  three  hours  or  the  equivalency  of  a  half  a  gallon  of  gasoline.

    • On  average  each  one  of  us  produces  4.4  pounds  of  solid  waste  each  day.

    • A  single  quart  of  motor  oil,  if  disposed  of  improperly,  can  contaminate  up  to  2,000,000  gallons  of  fresh  water.

    • Recycling  a  single  run  of  the  Sunday  New  York  Times  would  save  75,000  trees.

    • If  every  American  recycled  just  one-‐tenth  of  their  newspapers,  we  would  save  about  250,000,000  trees  each  year.

    • Americans  throw  away  25,000,000,000  Styrofoam  coffee  cups  every  year.

    •  Americans  use  2,500,000  plastic  water  bottles  every  hour,  most  of  them  are  thrown  away.

    • A  modern  glass  bottle  takes  4000  years  or  more  to  decompose,  even  more  if  it’s  in  a  landfill.

    • Every  year,  each  American  throws  away  1,200  pounds  of  organic  garbage  that  can  be  composted.

    • Americans  use  850,000,000  tons  of  paper  of  paper  a  year,  about  680  pounds  per  person

    • An  aluminum  can  that  is  thrown  away  will  still  be  a  can  500  years  from  now.

So remember, REDUSE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE!

    Solo & Ensemble

    By Madeline Ellexson

Solo and Ensemble is a contest for band and choir. The solo or ensemble performs in front of a judge and is judged on how the performers mix, if they are in tune, and how they look. This event was only for seventh and eighth graders. It was held on March 31, 2012 starting at around 7:30 A.M.

The event was held at our school, Bradley Central, and different schools came to perform as well. Some of the different schools that came to perform are Momence, Beecher, Maternity BVM, and Peotone.

I interviewed the choir and general music teacher, Mrs. Schneider, and asked her how she thought her choir students did. She replied that she was very proud of her students and they had gotten what they deserved. Meaning whoever practiced as much as they could deserved a first place. Whoever didn’t practice as much

    deserved a second place.

    How do you feel about

    graduating?

Kaitlyn W. – scared, nervous and happy Marissa M. – excited and nervous Ashlyn B. – I feel like we are stepping into a new world like a new beginning. We are finally getting to the exciting part in life. Tomlyn B. – excited Taylor F. – excited and sad Cara S. – awesome, new start but also kind of nervous Jacob R. – happy Jason R. – excited Emily W. – I think I will miss Bradley Central, the bus rides and the teachers but I am glad we are moving on and getting closer to the future Matt B. – Happy Adam R. – I will be happy if I make it.

I’m writing a book and the following is a summary and prologue. Please tell me a rating. It will be a continuous thing going through next year until I graduate.

Once, in the middle of time, there lived a young man. His name was Alexander. His parents were taken from him at an early age. He grew up as a slave to some traders. These people were of a different species. They weren’t human. They were evil. These “people” were the same people that killed his parents. He thinks he is there to kill them, but the Sisters of Fate have other plans for him. His life is going to be changed for the worst.
