Dear Parents and Guardians: As we enter the final stages of the 2016-2017 school year, I want to thank you for all of your efforts in supporting our mission here at City High Middle as you have truly made the difference in moving our program forward. Whether it was assisting with our plays, organizing parental events, facilitating our Diploma Programme tutoring sessions, assisting in our WorkZone, sponsoring a club, or attending PTSA meetings, we recognize your hard work and appreciate what you do for students. Looking back, our building level goals for the 2016-2017 school year were as follows: 40 IB Diplomas and all Diploma Programme subject scores at 4 or higher Meet CGI growth index on the MAP Reading/Math Assessments for all grade levels in Spring of 2017 Increase attendance rates in all grade levels with a focus on chronic absenteeism Increase all subject areas on PSAT/SAT from fall to spring Continue to infuse the philosophy of Economicology into the IB instructional framework Improve our greenhouse, continue our compost initiative, follow our sustainable landscape plan, and consistently

implement our recycling program Although many of the above items are still pending, we feel that with our collective efforts, we will hit our targets and continue to incrementally grow as a school community. We look forward to a great close to the school year as there are plenty of things happening in the month of May as follows: IB Examinations (May 1 through May 17) Senior Ice Skating (May 5 from 10:30 AM-12:00 PM) Middle School Activity (May 11 from 3:00-5:00 PM) Final CAS Deadline (May 12) Musical Revue (May 12 at 7:00 PM) Prom (May 19 from 7:00-10:00 PM at D2D) Senior Awards Night (May 17 at 6:00 PM) Spring Orchestra Concert (May 18 at 7:00 PM) Spring MS Band Concert (May 23 at 7:00 PM) Spring HS Band Concert (May 24 at 7:00 PM) PBIS Celebration Underclassmen Awards (May 23 at lunch time) Yearbook Signing Party (May 25 from 3:00-5:00 PM) City Graduation (June 6 at 6:00 PM) I also would like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated staff. The nucleus of our progress stems from the classroom and the wonderful work of our highly trained and dedicated teachers. Additionally, I appreciate our front office and counseling personnel, as well as our custodial and support staff, we thank you for a tremendous school year. Please look for mailings over the summer regarding orientation dates and times as we will communicate them as soon as they are finalized. It has been a pleasure serving the City families over the last six years, and I am honored to be part of the City family. Respectfully, Michael Pascoe, Ph.D.

Greetings From the Pr incipal

IB Update By Charlie VanderVliet

E-mail: [email protected]

The school year is quickly wrapping up and with that comes some important work in our IB programmes, including the

Personal Project and the Extended Essay.

IB Culminating Projects Extended Essay The Extended Essay is the opportunity for Diploma Programme students to investigate a topic of interest that is linked to one of the subject areas they are studying. The process includes students doing extensive research and analysis on their chosen topic in an attempt to answer a research question that they create. Students begin this work in the fall of their 11

th grade year

through receiving mini lessons guiding them through the process in 8

th hour classes. City has

been fortunate enough to partner with college libraries such as GRCC and Calvin, so that our students are able to get training in research from post-secondary institutions. At school, students are paired with a supervisor/mentor from our staff, who guides them through the writing process, offering feedback, suggestions, and guidance when needed. 11

th

grade students will submit their completed rough drafts in May, and receive extensive feedback from their mentors, so that they

can continue working on them until their final drafts are due in the fall of their senior year. Personal Project- The Personal Project is the opportunity for Middle Years Programme students to set personal goals and investigate a topic of interest. It acts as a way that students are able to demonstrate the ATL (approaches to learning) skills, consolidate the learning throughout the MYP and to develop as a reflective learner. Students are asked to set goals that will support them in learning about themselves all while being able to apply the knowledge that they have gleaned throughout their time here at City. Students are guided through a step by step process throughout their 10

th

grade year during 8th

hour.

On April 23, City held their yearly Personal Project Exhibition. This is a night that allows students to feature the work that they have been doing throughout the course of the year. Our eclectic group of students developed a variety of projects that featured them learning

new skills, creating, building, and inventing. During the exhibition, students were asked to stand with their projects and be able to speak to their learning experiences throughout the execution of the project. The exhibition was truly a testament to the amazing students we have at City High Middle School.

Earth Day at City Earth Day activities happened on April 14, when City hosted a school-wide Earth Day celebration. Students in grades 7-9 participated in on-site, interactive activities to promote earth-friendly practices, sustainability, a healthy environment and more! Students rotated through a variety of self-selected workshops and presentation sessions throughout the day. We were pleased to host a diverse crowd of local businesses and individuals from our community to assist with festivities. We are grateful for the involvement of so many generous and supportive community participants. Student activities included bulb planting, discovery of living creatures in our watershed, endangered species exploration, wildlife exhibits and interaction,

grounds clean-up, pollution scavenger hunts, biking and scuba equipment demonstrations, yoga, mindfulness exercises, paper grocery bag coloring for local

stores, creation of sustainable flowerpots, tracking and tagging animals, daylighting activities, music, recycling games, solar power use, and more! These sessions were fun, exploratory and innovative.

Presenters did a fantastic job educating students regarding local and global environmental awareness. We were honored and excited to have the following organizations and businesses represented through our guest presentations for the Earth Day event: Office of Sustainability Practices at GVSU, Fleurology Designs, John Ball Zoo, Grand Valley Metropolitan Council, Iyengar Yoga, Michigan

Department of Environmental Quality, Nichols, The Spoke Folks, West Michigan Environmental Action Council, Wildlife Rehab Center, Our Kitchen Table, Kent County Health Department, Catalyst Partners, Southtown Guitar, Moby’s Dive Shop, West Michigan Clean Air Coallition, To College Through College/Grand Rapids Public Library, Creston Neighborhood Association, WMU Social Work Department, GreenHome Institute, Teens Just Breathe, Organicycle, Blandford Nature Center, and Spartan Stores. Grades 10-12 participated in off-sight restoration and preservation practices within our area, which included class teambuilding exercises. Thankfully, we had beautiful weather as Sophomores traveled to Camp Manitou-Lin, Juniors explored Camp Roger, and Seniors worked at Blandford Nature Center.

Stay on top of assignments.

Work hard not to get behind.

We are excited to recognize and celebrate students who demonstrate IB Learner Profile attributes in the classroom and beyond. Each month teachers will recognize one of their students who exhibit these qualities. Students will receive a certificate and recipient’s photos will be on display for the month. The aim of all IB progammes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. -IBO 2013

March Winners 7th – Isabella Bufkin Nominated by Ms. Byrnes

Isabella Bufkin deserves this month’s humanitarian award because she demonstrates so many of the IB profile characteristics on a daily basis. She is

reflective about the knowledge she has, as well as the new knowledge she acquires. After reflecting, she will ask good questions, curious to learn and understand more, demonstrating a learning disposition. As she

learns about differences and similarities around the world, she demonstrates an appreciation, care, sensitivity, and compassion for our culture, as well as the traditions and values of others. As she communicates these ideas, she shows that she is responsible and respectful. Above all, she is such a pleasant person and a joy to be around. 8th – Ethan Tilly, Nominated by Mrs. Graff

I would like to nominate Ethan Tilly. Ethan Tilly is a very caring person who looks out for his classmates. He is very interested in learning math

and asks great questions. Ethan has a strong desire to understand the mathematics not just work the process. He thinks a lot about how to problem solve and reflects on what works. His collaboration skills shine when working with partners and in groups. I think Ethan is an awesome example of a student who has great IB character traits. 9th – JD Lancaster, Nominated by CHMS Administration

JD Lancaster exhibits many of the IB learner profile attributes specifically caring and being a communicator. JD collaborates effectively, listening carefully to the

perspectives of other individuals. He shows empathy, compassion and respect, committing to making a positive difference within the school. 10th – Hayden Atkins, Nominated by Mr. Martinez

Hayden Atkins is a wonderful student and a clear example of an IB learner. He is a hard worker, always getting his work done on time. He likes to participate in

class and help fellow classmates if they are having problems understanding concepts in Spanish. Hayden is kind, caring, knowledgeable and reflective. For

me, it is an honor to be his Spanish teacher.

11

11th – Naomi Billings nominated by Mrs. Emperor

Naomi Billings is the humanitarian for this month's junior class. Naomi represents many of the fabulous qualities of an IB learner, but she is a thinker. Naomi often thinks long and arduously about information and its validity. She is a

knowledgeable and ardent student who approaches her fellow students in a caring way. Naomi is a student who is a great writer and HL math student, making her balanced and the embodiment of the IB Learner Profile. 12th– Shiloh Boosamra, Nominated by Mrs. VandeGevel

He is a student leader who is kind, intelligent, ethical, and principled.

Spain Trip 2018! Ms. Pavlovic and Mrs. Anderson are pleased to announce that

they will be hosting a trip to Spain in the summer of 2018! Over

The season would not be possible without the help of volunteer Nate Ritsema (City ’09) and our parents. Thank you The season finished with the State Tournament at Eastern Michigan University. Of the eleven entries, five made it to semi-finals: William Kelly (12), Broadcasting; Matt Neils (11), Impromptu; Alex Van Kuiken (10), Extemp; Maya Baker (12), Dramatic Interp; and Rose Gerson (9), Storytelling.

Two made it to the finals. William Kelly placed 2nd in Broadcasting, and Rose Gerson – a ninth grader – came in 1st in Storytelling. Overall, City finished seventh among the CD schools.

Auction Results The 2017 City Lights, Country Nights Auction brought in over 100 attendees, delicious food, amazing scenery, and so many great auction items! At the end of the night, over $8,000 was raised for PTSA and school projects. Proceeds from the auction will help support City's technology needs, curriculum support for teachers, student requests, school competitions, and PTSA supported community and building events. Thank you to all who helped make the event a success!

Thank You for Successful Spring Picnic! We had plenty of smiling faces to help welcome our new families and get them fed. Thanks for your support!

Senior Grad Night Info Parents of seniors who did not attend the meeting on May 2, there is important information about travel to and from the all night event, timeline and various other pieces of information. Graduates who are unprepared will be unable to attend, even if they have paid. Please contact Sharon Music (340-2252), or for Spanish speaking--Tony Garza (706-8934)

Senior Grad Committee In Need of Volunteers The Senior ALL NIGHT Committee is looking for volunteers to help staff at a really cool charity poker fundraiser May 25-28, Thursday through Sunday. It takes place in the Kings Room in Grand Rapids. Shifts are from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.

with three parents per shift. This can be our biggest fundraiser yet if we can get all the slots filled. Please check your calendar and let Tony Garza know what day and time you can help out. Our part of the fundraiser is easy! [email protected] 616-706-8934 Must be a member of the PTSA to help. Join on the website: cityptsa.com

Uniform Closet Don’t forget the guidance office has a uniform closet for those who may need it. Those darn kids just keep growing and sometimes it’s hard to budget for more clothes – especially as the seasons change. The uniform closet has lots of options to help you out. And if you don’t find what you need, let Ms. Ralston know and we will make it happen. And, if you’re students went through a growth spurt, please consider donating your gently used uniform items to the closet. Thank you!

BOXTOPS for Education Have you been clipping those Boxtop labels off the products you buy regularly? Send them in with your student and raise money for the school. There’s a box in the office to collect them.

Shop Online? Try Smile.Amazon.com Another easy way to raise money for City is to start your online shopping at smile.amazon.com. When you start there, Amazon donates a portion of qualifying purchases to the nonprofit of your choice. Choose City High Middle PTSA from the dropdown menu underneath the search bar. Thanks!

PTSA Treasurer and Secretary Needed Numbers, Quickbooks, bank statements, checks and balances: Do those things make you happy? We are looking for someone to

begin shadowing our current PTSA treasurer in preparation to take over in the 2018-19 school year. Donna VanGessel has the system running like a fine-tuned machine and she would love to leave it in good hands. We also are in need of a secretary to

take notes at meetings, send out announcements and just help things run smoothly. Interested? Let us know! [email protected] or [email protected]

M ay is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

Why is exercise so important? Regular physical activity can produce long-term health benefits. It can help:

Prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and stroke

Control weight and reduce fat

Make your muscles stronger and build endurance

Promote strong bone, muscle, and joint development

Condition heart and lungs

Improve sleep

Decrease potential of becoming depressed and relieve stress

Increase your energy and self-esteem

Increase your chances of living longer

When you are not physically active, you are more at risk for:

High blood pressure

High blood cholesterol

Stroke

Type 2 diabetes

Heart disease

Cancer

It seems quite clear….time to get in gear and start moving! We also want to remind everyone that the Kent County Health Department will be conducting vision screening for all 7th and 9th grade students on May 24th and 25th. Yours for Health!
