Thank-you to the following individuals for the loving touches you bring to the residents of Knife River Care Center. Bonnie and Mike Krause for spending an afternoon planting flowers with the residents on Whispering Winds!

Thursday, Flag Day, June 14th, 2018, Three members of the American Legion Post from Hazen presented a Flag folding demonstration for the resident’s of Knife River Care Center. Resident’s who once served in the military were also member’s of the audience. The proper protocol for folding the flag was read while the three members of the American Legion took their turn with each fold. At the conclusion of the program resident’s and members of the American Legion took turns sharing memories and reminiscing about the effects of the war on them and their families. THANK-YOU! To the American Legion Post for taking the time out of your busy schedule and for sharing the proper Flag etiquette! Our country is proud of you and we at Knife River Care Center are proud of you as well!

FOOD STORAGE IN RESIDENT ROOMS When bringing your loved one a food treat or snack whether it be from your home or the grocery store, please make sure that it is stored in a plastic sealed container with a cover, or a zip-lock baggie. Plastic wrap is not considered a sealed container. Food left in a resident’s room unsealed or not properly stored is a great attraction to unwanted (GUESTS) pests!

Because of the longer daylight hours and the need of the resident’s wanting to be outdoors longer the front doors will now be locked from 8:00 pm to 6:45 am. If you are wanting to visit and enter the facility after the doors are locked at 8:00 pm, please use the phone located in the front entrance to be allowed into the facility.

The resident’s of Knife River Care Center were invited to an afternoon production of “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown” at the Sleepy Hol-low Arts Park on Thursday June 28th. Three activity aides and eight resident’s enjoyed the drive and the trip to Bismarck. There are many more bus rides and outings scheduled for the month of July. If you would like to voliunteer to assist with these outings please call Carey VanPelt at 873-3274. We would be happy to have you join us!

SOL WOLF Team Player for the Month of June 2018 Position: CNA Length of Time: 6 Years A Little Bit about Me: I was born and grew up in the Philippines. In the year of 1995 I became a resident of Beulah, North Dakota up to present. I attended school in the Philippines and earned a degree as Bachelor of Science in Education major in Biology at Bicol College, Daraga Albay. After I graduated from college I worked at the Pearl S. Buck Foundation as a teacher. We helped them in medical, education, housing, and citizenship. The Director of the foundation is an American, Mr. William S. McCabe from Florida and assistant director was Mr. Paul Maxwell from Iowa. I worked there for 10 years, it was a good job. However, because of my husband, I left my country and moved to the US in Jan. 22, 1995, (the snow looked like sugar! That was what I said the first time I held the snow.) I became a US citizen on May 11, 1999. I have 3 brothers and 2 sisters in the Philippines. They are all married and have their own family. My parents were both gone when I moved to North Dakota. My Interests, Hobbies and Pastimes: I love the outdoors such as camping and gardening. I enjoy traveling and spending time with my family. I also love to cook, read books, sewing and listening to good music. My Family: I have been married for 23 years to my wonderful husband, Donald Wolf. I met him through one of the mothers of my student and we wrote letters for 5 years. He worked at the Antelope Valley Station for 35 years as an electrician. He retired last year in June of 2017. That is why he loves to give me a ride from home to work and back home. We are blessed with one son. He is now 22 years old. His name is Philip and is still studying in college. He is taking Civil Engineering at North Dakota State University in Fargo. I have 2 brother-in-law’s, and 2 sister-in-law’s, Cheryl and Glenton Wolf of Colorado and Sarah and Walter Wolf of Center, ND. They are enjoying their retirement. Family Pets: We have 2 cats; both were rescued from winter weather. Lucky is a male cat and he is now 13 years old and, Tarball is a female cat and is now 2 years old.

What I Really Like About Working at KRCC: The residents, everyone has a unique personality. It is won-derful to know each one of them. At the end of my shift I feel rewarded knowing that I’ve done some-thing good to them. Also, I get to work with great staff. I’m proud to say I work at KRCC.

Birthstone – Ruby

Not surprisingly, the word ruby comes from the Latin word rubens, meaning “red.”

Rubies can range in color from light raspberry to dark purple. The Mogok rubies from Myanmar, formerly Burma, are the most valuable and sought-after because of their color, described as pigeon-blood red.

Flower of the Month – Larkspur Many flowers take their names from their colors, but the larkspur takes its name from an animal. The flower’s scientific name, delphinium, is derived from the Greek word delphis, meaning “dolphin.” As the larkspur begins to bloom, its petals form graceful arches and curve in a bottle-like shape, resembling the nose of this joyful marine mammal.

The larkspur is also said to reflect the dolphin’s spirit—a purple larkspur representing the soaring emotions from a first love. Larkspurs of all colors are thought to symbolize feelings of lightness, levity, and an open heart.

The entire plant is extremely poisonous, and historically the flower has been used to drive away unwanted critters, such as scorpions and poisonous snakes. Transylvanians take this tradition a bit further—they plant blue larkspurs around the horse stables to ward off witches.

The Sanskrit word for ruby is ratnaraj, which translates to “king of the gemstones.” And ancient Indian rulers certainly gave newfound rubies a royal welcome. It is said that whenever an especially beautiful ruby was discovered, the ruler sent high dignitaries out to meet the precious gemstone and welcome it in appropriate style.

Large rubies of good quality are very rare—and very expensive. In fact, the ruby is the highest-priced colored gemstone ever sold at an auction. In May 2015, a Burmese ruby sold for $30 million at Sotheby’s Geneva auction.

July Birthdays

July wasn’t the original name for the month. On the early Roman calendar, July was called Quintilis. Julius Caesar was born in this month, and the name was changed to Julius, or July,

to honor him when he was alive. Julius Caesar made major reforms to the inaccurate Roman calendar, and his Julian calendar is still used in Eastern Orthodox Christian countries. The

Gregorian calendar that exists today in the West is a slightly edited version of the Julian calendar.
