Fulton Paper sponsor the Parents Newsletter paper

Welcome to the first newsletter of the 2017/18 academic year. The purpose of the newsletter is to celebrate the suc-cesses of the school and individual students and to share news on what is happening in the school. It has been a very busy half term. We held a very success-ful open day and a sixth form open evening, both of which were very well attended. I am delighted with the increas-ing popularity of our sixth form which is going from strength to strength. In addition we held a number of tours for parents for 2018 entry and our entrance exam attracted nearly 600 applicants! It was wonderful that so many stu-dents gave up their time to help at these events. They real-ly are amazing ambassadors for the school and I always feel so proud of all the positive feedback I receive. To ensure the safety of all our students I would once again ask parents not to park on the yellow or zigzag lines outside the school or obstruct the pavement when dropping off or collecting their child. Your assistance in this would be greatly appreciated. Finally, a reminder that details of all upcoming events are available to view on the calendar tab of the school website.

ICT SYSTEMS

Over this last week year 7 and 8 have come together to contrib-ute to the Harvest Appeal for the Southend based homeless char-ity, HARP. All the items that were collected have been given to HARP, which will help with the provision of hot meals for those visiting their centres. Last year's appeal generated enough items to fill two storage containers and following the generous contri-butions from our students this year, it is likely that this will again be repeated.

Year 7 & 8 students presenting food donations to Prakash from HARP.

“I have enjoyed being a part of this because all the food is going to a good cause, giving the homeless food to help them survive.” Ellie Quinn 8-06.

“I enjoyed donating food to Harp because it all goes to charity” Lewis Wyatt 7-01.

“I think this is a great thing to do because you have things which the less fortunate do not have” Jack Wood 8-06.

“I liked being involved in Harp because I know that I would go to homeless people at Christmas and make them happy” Kacey Mottershead 8-06.

“I think this a good thing to do because it can help people who are poor and need help.” Lily Parsons 7-01.

KJS NOTICES

So, 95% attendance might sound good but it impacts significantly on your child’s chances of achieving well. Every day counts!

What is the most important thing you can do? Ensure your child/ward attends school regularly. Every student at the King John School is expected to maintain an attendance level of 98% and above. It is the responsibility of everyone in our school community – parents, students, staff and governors to ensure they achieve this. Therefore, we monitor and review the attendance of all students constantly and have introduced a new reward system for students this year; PLATINUM – 98% and above Well done, you are maintaining an excellent overall level of attendance. Keep it up, and always aim for 100% GOLD – Between 96%-97.9% You are maintaining a satisfactory level of attendance. Being in most/all of your classes will help you to achieve as you won’t need to catch up. Keep it up, and aim for 100%. SILVER – Between 90%-95.9% It is a cause for concern if you are missing this much school because you are missing important in-formation in your lessons. Push yourself to make it in every day wherever possible – Go for GOLD

BRONZE -Below 90%. If you are below 90%, then this is a serious cause for concern. You may need some further support from the school or EWO to raise your attendance, as missing this much school will mean you have a lot to catch up on.

It is clearly understood that there are exceptional circumstances when levels of attendance may fall below expectations for rea-sons beyond the students and parents control. We would ask you to please keep the school informed of all absences. Leave of absence during term time Taking a child out of school in term time will affect their schooling as much as any other absence and we expect parents to help us by not taking children out in school time. Leave in term time will not be agreed by the school at any time unless circumstances surrounding the request can be evidenced, by parents/carers, to

be exceptional. Any child taken out of school without permission will have the absences recorded in the register as unauthorised. Please also note the following changes from the Missing Educa-tion and Child Employment Service that will come into effect from 1 October 2017; A penalty notice may be issued if 10 unauthorised absences have occurred during a 10 week period (instead of the current 6 week period) A penalty notice may be issued if there are 6 or more unauthor-ised sessions due to a holiday taken during the first two weeks of September Punctuality The school day consists of two sessions, morning and afternoon. Students are expected to be on the school premises no later than 8.35 am. When lateness is more frequent or persistent the stu-dent concerned will miss valuable teaching time, lateness also causes disruption to the class. A late mark after registration has closed counts as an unauthorised absence and therefore will affect attendance.

Student Behaviour Dear Parents/Carers, I am very disappointed to report that despite my previous letter in May we have yet again received further complaints from local residents and members of the community regarding the conduct and behaviour of a small group of students when leaving school at the end of the day and whilst travelling on public transport to and from school. When in school uniform we expect our students to behave in an acceptable manner and to not do anything that would tarnish our reputation in the wider community. This message was reinforced in assemblies at the end of the last academic year and again in the welcome back assemblies in Sep-tember. As a temporary strategy we have increased staff pres-ence before and after school in the local community and on the buses and trains. Any student caught in breach of this will be issued with the ap-propriate school sanction. We may also insist that students fail-ing to follow this advice must be collected by parents/carers or where this is not possible would need to remain in school and take a later bus/train home. I appreciate that this may not affect your son/daughter but would encourage you to discuss the contents of this letter with them so that if they see such behaviour they report it to the school so that it can be dealt with efficiently. The King John School has always enjoyed a positive reputation within the local area and it is a shame that a small minority ap-pear to be damaging this for the majority. I hope that with your continued support we are able to eliminate this recent spate of unacceptable behaviour.

Attendance at The King John School Regular school attendance is essential for all of our students to make good progress, achieve their academic potential and con-sequently have better chances in life. There is a strong connec-tion between attendance and achievement at school. Absence is proven to have a significant negative impact upon a student’s educational attainment, as per the table below;

Office Duty Along with the academic work Year 8 students complete this year, a number of opportunities are available for students to widen their school experiences and develop as a person. One of these responsibilities is office duty, which students are asked to complete twice throughout the year for a period of 2/3 hours. Our office duty students are a vital part of our school communi-cation throughout the day, allowing us to pass along vital mes-sages, and remind students about key events. Teachers are made aware of students completing office duty and will communicate directly with students about any work missed.

Up-to-date Contact Information Please make sure that school has up-to-date contact details. You can update these details online through the SIMS APP or SIMS Learning gateway. Or download and complete the student data form from the school website. M G Beston Assistant Headteacher.

Concussion Awareness As part of concussion awareness the RFU have asked that all play-ers, coaches, teachers and parents educate themselves with the potential dangers of concussion. I have copied the directive from the RFU below and ask that any parent whose son/daughter plays rugby completes the online course. It only takes a few minutes and could be very important if your son/daughter plays rugby. Kind regards, Mr Webb Concussion Education Code of Practice The RFU, our national constituent bodies and partners are deter-mined to ensure that we lead the way in keeping the welfare of our players at the forefront of all we do. Therefore, as part of your involvement in the 2017-18 NatWest Schools Cup, we along-side the ERFSU, would like you to commit to a four-step Concus-sion Education Code as follows in your school:

All staff coaching or refereeing contact rugby to have success-fully completed the 30-minute Headcase Concussion Aware-ness Course for teachers and parents available here

All players in extra-curricular contact rugby in Year 10 and above to have successfully completed the 20-minute Head-case Concussion Awareness Course for players available here

All players in curricular rugby in Year 7 and above to have watched the 7-minute ERTV Concussion video available here

Rugby parents in the school to have been signposted to the Headcase Concussion Awareness programme here

Successful completion is proved by downloading the certificate at the end of the online course. We believe your application to en-ter the National Schools Cup is your commitment to deliver this code. We will be sending out a reminder when the draw is pub-lished and again in September to ensure your staff and players have completed their course before your first round match. Should you require any other information or help at this point please do not hesitate to get in contact.

School Library I would like to thank some parents for their generosity in do-nating much needed books to the LRC last term. You will appre-ciate that with the price of books today; schools have to keep a very careful stock of all books. We would therefore, be most grateful if you could ensure that you check that all school library books are renewed or returned by your child before the end of term. The school library is very popular with our students and certain series of fiction books are borrowed so many times that they become unusable. If you have any unwanted books we would be happy to offer them a home. In particular we are looking for books in good condition by the following authors:- Suzanne Collins: The Hunger Games Trilogy Cassandra Clare: City of Glass, City of Lost Souls, Clockwork An-gel, City of Fallen Angels, City of Ashes, Clockwork Prince, Clock-work Princess, Lady Midnight, City of Heavenly Fire Christopher Paolini: Eragon, Inheritance or The Vault of Souls, Eldest, Bringer or The Seven priorities or Eragon Shadeslayer John Green: The fault in our stars, Paper Towns, Looking for Alaska James Dashner: The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials, The Death Cure Jeff Kinney: The Long Haul, The Third Wheel, Old School, Cabin Fever, Hard Luck Charlie Higson: The Enemy, The End, The Dead David Walliams: The Boy in The Dress, Grandpas Great Escape, Ratburger, Awful Auntie, Demon Dentist, Mr Stink Liz Pichon: Everything’s Amazing, Absolutely fantastic, Extra Spe-cial Treats, A Tiny Bit Lucky, Excellent Excuses, The Brilliant World of Tom Gates, Tom Gates Genius Ideas Mostly Rick Riordan: Percy Jackson books, Kane Chronicles and The Heroes of Olympus Series Zoe Sugg: Girl Online, EGirl on Tour Sarah Maas: Queen of Shadows, Crown of Midnight, Throne of Glass You can send the books in with your son or daughter or leave them in Reception. If you have any queries or have other books that you think may benefit the library then please contact: [email protected] Yours sincerely Alison Sykes Learning Resources Manager

Parking in School As you are aware we request that parents do not enter the main car park or sixth form cark park on Shipwrights Drive to pick up and drop off students due to health and safety implications. It is apparent that some parents think this rule does not apply to them and continue to arrive extremely early to get a space in the car parks to pick up their child(ren). I ask you again to please respect our requests to not drive into the main car park or sixth form cark park. Only those parents who require disa-bled access should enter the main car park. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
