It’s no small responsibility to take over a successful family farm. In fact, Colten and Branden Kimmy have been splitting the job, along with their brother-in-law Petr Svoboda. Their father, Neil Kimmy, sold each man a parcel of 400-500 acres to get them started – but in the coming years, it’ll be up to the younger folks in the family to take on and divide more of the decision-making on the operation.

“I wanted them to learn what it takes to do it,” says Neil.

“So far, it’s working out well,” adds Colten, before joking, “If someone has a problem, we all yell at each other and it’s dealt with real quick.”

While the guys may hold the titles on the land, the whole Kimmy family is hands-on in the operation. The fields of DEKALB® 75-42 CR canola, alongside the family’s DEKALB® Market Development trial plots, surround the property. They look strong and healthy with hardly a weed in sight. With that many acres of canola, the hard work that happens on the operation is clear to see, and it takes a lot more than the four guys to get it done. The women in the family, like Neil’s wife Nadine and daughter Trisia, help with combining and taking turns with the food prep. Branden’s wife, Hayley, is an agronomist, which comes in handy. Colten’s wife has also been instrumental in the grain handling.

“We couldn’t survive without the girls,” Neil says with a smile, which is followed by nods and murmurs of agreement from the guys.

With the whole family working around the clock, the Kimmys’ dining room table has sat nearly untouched. Most of the meals happen out in the field, where the family can squeeze in a little time to laugh and eat together before the

With the whole family working around the clock, the Kimmys’ dining room table has sat nearly untouched. Most of the meals happen out in the field, where the family can squeeze in a little time to laugh and eat together before the

combines start rolling again. Even the smallest Kimmys have started pitching in. The pile of rocks their little hands have picked throughout the season doubles as a playground in the front yard. Mylee, Neil Jr., Amelia and little Anthony can be found playing games on the pile as their parents and grandparents look on.

“They started picking rocks this spring and they did awesome,” says Petr, adding with a laugh,

“But on the third day they got a little sick of it.”

While playing on the rocks is a lot more fun than picking them, the family believes it’s an important place for the next generation to start.

“You learn to love it,” says Branden, “The days used to feel long, but now I love going all day."

That’s the grit and team spirit you need to succeed on today’s farms. Not unlike the DEKALB® canola in the family’s fields, non-stop performance and hardiness

is in the Kimmys’ genes. The Kimmys know that when it’s time to go, you keep going. After all, if their canola can handle some heavy rain, it’s not about to stop them, either. Or, for that matter, their love of farming.

“It’s the freedom,” says Neil. “The freedom of being outside.”

Brendan agrees. “I like being able to open the front door and get to work.”

This has been part two of the Kimmys’ story. Read part one online at DEKALB.ca/kimmy

We thank the Kimmys for choosing DEKALB® brand seed for their farm and wish their entire family & operation a safe and successful harvest this year and for many years to come. Check out the results of the Kimmy’s canola Market Development trial on DEKALB.ca this fall.
