TONIGHT Monday 21st May

Dave Everett co-founder of “School for Life Foundation” lives and works in

Uganda. Dave was born in Africa and came

to Australia at a young age. Dave went to

William Clarke College in Kellyville. Dave

and co-founder Annabelle Chauncey have

established a primary school in Uganda.

Chairman: Keith McGill Fellowship: Phil Bishop Vote of Thanks: Graham Taylor

Last week….. On Monday 14th May, we had 2 impromptu speakers. Sue

gave us more of an insight into the Rotary International conference held in Bangkok and David gave us a live demonstration of our new website.

Sue spoke about the incredible experience to be one of 40,000 Rotarians from all around the world who gathered in Bangkok for the International Rotary convention. She said “Rotarians from 170 countries converged on Thai-land to take part in the annual event”. The sheer size of this convention gives you an enormous appreciation of the internationality of Rotary and reinforces the value that Rotary gives to the world. Sue strongly recommends we all consider attending the 2013 convention in Lisbon, Portugal.

David was able to show us on the big screen our club website via an internet connection using a clever iphone’s “hotspot”. David explained navigating around the website and what was behind some of the drop down menus. The website looks bright and inviting. This has been a monumental task for David ploughing thru the complex mazes behind the scenes to get things up on the

site and looking so good. David acknowledged and thanked Graham Taylor for all his work in developing the content in our early attempts at a website.

We now have a website we can be very proud of and direct people to learn a bit more about our club.

Well done David.

Post script to Hat Day Wow! Everybody looked so beguiling on Hat Day.

There are so many bald members in our Club (well, males that is) that hats made most of us look a lot younger. Some wore their hats at a jaunty angle that took years off their age. Others fruitlessly pulled hats over their faces to obliterate the ravages of time. Some didn’t care less—perhaps because their hats were uninspiring or lacked soul or class—even juvenile. Or maybe they had arrived cavalierly without a hat—and had so been shamed into relying on Rappy’s extensive haute chapeau wardrobe. Some ordinary hayseeds bra-zenly wore the colours of their stripe with their ordinary Akubras. What a scandal, however, by design or accident—or even fear of the dreaded ‘hat hair’—that most female members were apologies and so neglected to make their statement on an occasion of such consequence.

So, I say woe to the hatless. Woe to the bigheads that can’t fit into hats. Let there be more solid-brimmed fedoras and swashbuckling pirate head-dresses (like last year), the silk confection of a biret-ta, perhaps the odd kalimavkion and even a cro-cheted kippa. Let our hats be a mark of optimism. But please, let’s discover the truth about ourselves from our hats, rather than hiding deep within them.

More hats and Hat Days, I say.

A hat fan…..

The Hills Chamber Ensemble is a community musical ensemble founded and led by the renowned Castle Hill cellist, Ljubo Oblikov. It presents an annual series of chamber music concerts in Ken-thurst. The Ensemble’s repertoire includes music ranging from the baroque, classical and 19th cen-tury romantic periods to contem-porary pieces. Its 2012 season of four Kenthurst concerts is held on Sundays in Christ Church Anglican Church, 28 Pitt Town Road, Kenthurst, commencing at 2.30 PM. Afternoon tea is provided. The next concert will be Sunday 3rd June, at which the major work will be Beethoven’s Sonata for Cello and Piano No 2

Hope we see you there!

My thanks to Sue O’Neill and David Gadiel for standing in as speakers last week on short no-tice.

Sue and Graham Taylors trip was an important part of our club’s commitment to International projects that foster education in areas that not only need it but are also areas where the im-pact of education will have a dramatic effect on the wellbeing of the communities of some of the poorest places in the world. Sue’s report on the Rotary International Convention was informative and showed the in-terest that exists in Rotary.

David brought us up to speed on our website; rotayclubofkenthurst.org.au which will be an important tool in the com-munity’s knowledge of our club and its activities. David has done a lot of work in the formation of the website and the club appreciates his work. Each member can now access the members’ only portion with their user name and password.

Geoff Hamilton, Harry Dutton and Maggie, Kay Leonard, Nev Smerdon and myself together with 3 others- who include Neville and Denise Motley- will be off to Japan on the 25th of May and we will miss 2 meetings but will be doing makeups with Kanazawa and our sister club Toyama Mirai where we will, on the 5th of June, attend their 15th Anniversary Dinner. We are look-ing forward to the visit and the opportunity of meeting again our friends in Kanazawa and Toyama. We will also be meeting up with some of the Interact students who the club recently hosted on their trip to Kenthurst.

Tony Goode will stand in next week for me.

Vanimo Container

We all remember the container we loaded in January for Vanimo Hospital. After several delays it finally reached its destination in Vanimo. Fortunately Karo was there to be part of the unloading and distribution process. It will be wonderful to get all her news on Monday night.

Following is an email form Elias Kapavore the CEO of Vanimo Hospital.

From: Elias Kapavore ([email protected])

The container was excellent. The container was unloaded in the hospital premises this after-noon witnessed by Karo. The school had a welcome reception for Karo and us. The hospital got its stuff. Rest of the boxes mainly books are sorted out by Karo and will be distributed to schools tomorrow. Everything went very well. Karo will be on her flight tomorrow am satisfied. I will put a brief report for this container for Karo to bring over.

Thank you very, very much for everything. Elias

The Trustees of The Rotary Foundation have identified six areas of focus for the new Future Vision structure. These areas reflect critical humanitarian is-sues and needs that Rotarians are addressing worldwide. They will align Rota-ry with other international development efforts and will strategically further the Foundation’s Mission.

The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.

The areas of focus are; Peace and conflict prevention/resolution

Disease prevention and treatment

Water and sanitation

Maternal and child health

Basic education and literacy

Economic and community development

Rotary Clubs serve communities around the world, each with unique concerns and needs. Rotarians have continually adapted and improved the way they respond to those needs, taking on a broad range of service projects. The most successful and sustainable Rotary service tends to fall within one of the above six areas.
