    Q: When will Kelsey

    Grammer return to TV?

    —Craig C., Rochester, N.Y.

    A: Tonight! Grammer plays

    King Herod on National

    Geographic Channel’s Palm

    Sunday presentation of

    Killing Jesus. By the time

    you see that, though, the

    former Frasier TV star, 60,

    will have moved on to

    Broadway for the dual

    role of Captain Hook and

    theatrical producer

    Is Cote de Pablo,

    who played

    Ziva David on

    NCIS, still acting?—P. Hardin,

    Birmingham, Ala.

    A: Indeed. De Pablo, 35,

    took several months off

    after her exit from NCIS,

but she is back on CBS on

    March 31 in the two-night

    mini-series The Dove-

    keepers, based on Alice

    Hoffman’s novel about the

    siege of Masada, the

    ancient Jewish strong-

    hold. “I was captivated by

    the characters,” she says.

    “They were incredibly

    strong women who

    did things out of pas-

    WALTER SCOTT ASKS...

SCOTTFOLEYThe 42-year-old actor is no stranger to TV love triangles, from vying for the affections of Felicity on the 1998-2002 series of that name or wooing Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) away from the president on ABC’s Thursday-night smash, Scandal. You can also see him promoting Bausch + Lomb’s new line of BioTrue contact lens products.

Which character is closer to you in real life, sweet Noel

from Felicity or tough-guy Jake on Scandal? “I am no

longer ashamed to say that Noel is much closer to my

heart and my real personality. I have three kids now, I

have a minivan; I’ve become that guy.”

Do you have any daredevil hobbies? “I did triathlons for

a long time. I am very athletic and outdoorsy. I sort of live

on the outskirts of L.A. We have a bunch of hiking trails

around us. I am a big tennis player.”

The whole Scandal cast interacts with fans on

Twitter. What’s that like? “It’s really cool. I

watched Little House on the Prairie when I was

a kid. If I could have talked to Melissa Gilbert

or Michael Landon while that show was air-

ing, I would have flipped out!”

Can you give us any hints about what’s

in store for Jake this season? “I’m

just hoping to stay alive—it’s a dif-

ferent world now as a TV actor

than it was 10 years ago.

    You can never be

    too sure!”

    2. Real food options (not just peanuts). “A juicy, Kobe beef burger made with fresh meat wins every time.”

    4. Music that fits the bar’s theme—at reason-able decibel levels. “I don’t go to a piano bar to hear Lil Wayne, and I shouldn’t have to injure

my vocal chords trying to carry on a conversation.”

Raising the BarJon Taffer, the star of Spike’s Sunday night Bar Rescue reality show, is heading to Las Vegas this week, where he’ll host the world’s larg-est bar and nightclub convention. Here are his ingredients for a great night at the bar.

    1. Enough bartenders. “I go to a bar to enjoy a cocktail, socialize and have a great time—not to stand around waving my money hoping the bar-tender looks my way.”

    3. A bartender who knows when to stir and when to shake . “Don’t make my Old Fashioned the same way you’d make my Cadillac Margarita.”

DEEP-SPACE TRAVEL AT HOMEHold on to your spacesuit! Director Christopher Nolan’s epic science iction lick, Interstellar, about a team of explorers who travel across space and time in an atempt to ensure human-ity’s survival, arrives on Blu-ray and DVD March 31 ($23, Para-mount). We asked astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson to weigh in on the ilm’s scientiic accuracy. “The science that they tack-led was ambitious. I’d give it an eight or nine out of 10,” he says. “They had a real science advisor, who is a friend of mine, and he’s an expert on Einstein’s general theory of relativity.”

  • hey’re arguably the most memo-rable words ever spoken by a newly inaugurated U.S. president. But John F. Kennedy’s call to civic action is remarkable not only for being eloquently simple and succinct. It easily could be the motto of the entire Kennedy clan who, despite much personal trage-dy and controversy, is so passion-ately and unwaveringly devoted to public service it seems to be in the family’s DNA.

Today, the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate opens.he institute was the vision of the late Ted Kennedy who, inspired by his love of the Senate, wanted to create a place where the public could experience and learn about the legislative process and the importance of public debate and civic involve-ment. It is another milestone in this family’s public service legacy.

“Teddy believed that when you became a Senator you became something bigger than yourself, that power had been vested in you to do the work of the people for

the good of the country,” says Victoria Reggie Kennedy, Ted Kennedy ’s second wife and co-founder of the EMK Institute. Although Ted elected to use public

oice as his instrument for doing good, as did his brothers John and Robert Kennedy, other members of the family have taken alternate avenues of altruism.

Regardless of how they’ve cho-sen to serve, the Kennedys share a zeal for public service that has en-dured for four generations. Patrick Kennedy, Ted’s younger son, says it all started with his “grandmother’s heavy emphasis on setting the moral code for the family.”

Doing Good & Faith Learned YoungPatrick’s grandparents were Joseph and Rose Kennedy, whose brood of nine included JFK and Robert Kennedy as well as Ted. he only sibling still living, Jean Kennedy Smith, credits her parents with in-stilling in their children a sense of obligation to understand and con-tribute to the world outside of the Kennedy fold. “We were all

“Ask not what your country can do for you—Ask what you can do for your country.”

required to do something to make the world better,” she says. Now 87, Jean remembers that her mom would cut out articles from the newspaper and at meals “either put them on this board that she put by the kitch-en or she’d clip them to her dress with a safety pin. And then she would unpin it and say, ‘Did you know that so and so is a Muslim now? Do you know what a Muslim is?’ And then we’d get a little lesson.”

Ted Kennedy Sr. “felt very blessed to have come from the family that he did,” says Victo-ria Kennedy. “You’ve got these great role models of people who just kept on going, persevered, because it wasn’t about them. It was about the greater good.”

“My father’s whole approach to service was informed by our family’s ethic, which was on the back of his mass card,” says Patrick. “It says to treat others essentially as you would want to be treated yourself. It’s so basic.” Victoria agrees: “Teddy always said his guiding principle was the Beatitudes. It’s about feed-ing the hungry, caring for the poor. It is what his brothers, mother and sisters all talked about: ‘ose to whom much is given, much is required.’ They had a real sense that you could do good in the world—and you had an obligation to.”

It’s not surprising that the Kennedy tradition of service is steeped in religion: e family is famously Catholic. “Bobby almost was a priest, so he was very religious,” says Jean. “We all were, in different ways. Be-cause our parents were.”

  • Rose’s nine offspring (his dad, Sargent Shriver, a former U.S. Ambassador to France, ran for vice president in 1972), credits Catholicism for rallying his fam-ily to serve not out of obligation, but because of a uniquely sincere desire to help others. “I don’t think ought is enough to sustain a commitment,” he says. “What our Catholic tradition has done well is make you not just ought to

help, but want to help—hunger for it. Be hungry for justice, be hungry for healing, be hungry for connection, be hungry for level-ing the playing ield. hat’s more than just a moral imperative. It’s believing that your best self will always be in solidarity with those who are having a hard time.” Af-ter all, he adds, “Jesus was all about [taking care of ] the poor and the marginalized and then having a party.”

The ‘Helping Gene’ in Action Indeed, Shriver goes on to give his mom and dad props for put-ting a positive spin on civic duty. “Everybody thinks that service is burdensome or laborious or duty or guilt. What my parents taught me was that you could have a

great time. You could have a huge amount of fun,” he says.

Shriver, 55, has devoted his life to education, irst as a public high school teacher in New Haven, Conn. He went on to focus on disadvantaged kids and those with disabilities, and is now chairman of Special Olympics, which his mother founded in 1968. Eunice saw that children with intellectual disabilities had

    no place to play, so she created a s u m m e r d a y c a m p i n h e r b a c k y a r d f o r them. Now each year, more than 4 million athletes with intellectual disabilities par-t ic ipate in as many as 80,000 events and com-petitions around the world.

“ S o m e b o d y f rom the outside looking in might say, ‘Oh, he’s helping re-tarded children.’ But the missing story here is the incredible fun that comes from solidarity with people on the outside of the mainstream,” says Shriver. “What service isn’t, is lucrative. But what it is, is joyful and fun and fulilling.”

Eunice found her public ser-vice calling in helping children with intellectual disabilities be-cause her oldest sister (and the third oldest of her siblings), Rosemary, was such a child. But despite Rosemary’s challenges, says Jean, she was never excluded from family fun. “We played ten-nis with Rosemary and she was in all our games. She went swim-ming with us. Nobody ever said,

Arthritis Sufferers Seek Pain Relief Alternatives

It’s an indisputable and unfortunate fact of

life for arthritis sufferers: oral pain medications

    for arthritis, including over-the-counter pain

    relievers and anti-infammatory medications,

carry a long list of potential side effects. Just

look at the warning labels on any of these

medications, and you will be amazed by the

    problems that could arise.

Of course, most people who take these

    prescription or over-the-counter medications

don’t think twice when they’re in pain.

Whether they think the negative side effects

only happen to other people or they simply

want relief, popping a pill is an easy thing to

    do. Unfortunately, even the over-the-counter

medications that have been used and trusted

for decades can pose health risks if misused,

taken at the wrong dose or relied upon for

    a long period of time.

    Topical Products Growing in Popularity

News reports about these risks have many

    arthritis sufferers looking for alternatives,

which can be found in some topical pain relief

products, like creams or ointments. But not all

topical pain relievers are created equal.

Some of the most widely used topical

products contain capsaicin, which is an active

component in hot peppers and has a warming

effect on the skin. Others use menthol, which

has a strong odor. According to the FDA, some

products with these ingredients have caused

skin irritation in rare instances. These products

    are typically associated with sports-related

injuries or muscle pain, but many people use

    them for arthritis.

The Secret Weapon for Arthritis Pain

One standout product in the pain relief aisle

is something of a surprise: Australian Dream®

Arthritis Pain Relief Cream. Australian Dream

was introduced years ago as a safe, effective

treatment for arthritis pain. In the last few years,

the product has gained rapidly in popularity,

becoming a best seller at many retailers.

Unlike other topical pain relief products,

Australian Dream has no odor, no greasy resi-

due, and it does not burn the skin. It is a gentle,

soothing cream that effectively relieves arthritis

pain wherever you put it – your hands and oth-

er joints – without the side effects of some oral

    pain relievers.

    Australian Dream works differently from

most pain relievers – topical or oral – but it

is real medicine that provides real pain relief.

Its active ingredient triggers vasodilation, or a

widening of the blood vessels in the treated area,

to increase circulation. This is actually one of

the body’s natural ways to relieve pain.

With all these benefts, it’s no wonder that

Australian Dream has become so popular in

recent years. Here’s one more beneft, and it’s

quite possibly the most impressive: Australian

Dream is backed by an exclusive Empty

Jar Guarantee®. If you are not completely

satisfed, you can send back the empty jar for a

full refund – no questions asked.

    Australian Dream Arthritis Pain Relief

Cream is available for purchase at retailers

    everywhere, including Walmart, Walgreens,

Target, CVS/pharmacy, Rite Aid and also in

many supermarkets. Learn more about the

arthritis relief secret and fnd a store near

    you at AustralianDream.com.

  • tion to make the world better than when you got here,” he says.

hat was likely a driving factor for President John Kennedy when he signed the Community Mental Health Act in 1963, weeks before being assassinated. he goal of the bill was to establish mental health centers where people with illness-es like schizophrenia could be treated while living at home, rath-er than being institutionalized. Although only about half of the 1,500 proposed centers were built, JFK’s advocacy for the mentally ill has clearly remained an important issue for the younger generations of his family.

Drawing Strength from SorrowEdward M. Kennedy, who died in 2009, is recognized by both political parties as having been America’s most important advocate for national health care reform. His passion for this issue was driven, in part, by a personal brush with tragedy when his older son, Ted Jr., lost his right leg to bone cancer at the age of 12.

“My father personally took command of the entire ordeal, being with me in the hospital room, sleeping there, giving me my injections, caring for me all that time,” says Ted Jr. “He met other families whose children were in my predicament, but those kids didn’t have access to health insurance or money; their families were personally bankrupted by their illness. He believed people shouldn’t be made destitute in car-ing for a sick child. He said that in taking care of me he developed his belief in the need for uniform health care.

“My dad’s compassion,” he con-tinues, “is indelibly imprinted on me. I was scared and extremely

  • vulnerable. I didn’t know what was going to happen to me. My father helped build my confi-dence in believing that I could do anything I wanted in my life, despite losing my leg.”

Subsequently, Ted Sr. encour-aged his son to go into politics. “He thought I’d love it because I have passion about issues and a positive outlook on life, even after almost dying young.”

The Family Tradition ContinuesIn January, Ted Jr. was sworn in as a member of the Connecticut State Senate, where he feels he’ll

be able to do more good than if he followed in his father’s and uncles’ footsteps to Washington.

“I love representing my neigh-bors,” he says. “I’m grateful for that opportunity. Today all the political action is in the states, not in gridlocked Washington.”

Ted Jr.’s brother Patrick also avoids the politics of the nation’s capital. He is co-founder of One Mind, an organization looking for treatments and cures for brain injuries and other diseases, and he serves on the board of the EMK Institute alongside Victoria Kennedy.

The institute, housed in an elegant building designed by renowned architect Raphael Viñoly, adjoins the John F. Ken-nedy Presidential Library. The interiors were designed by Ed Schlossberg, a gifted designer of participatory museum spaces who is also the husband of JKF’s daughter, Caroline. Besides inter-active displays and research facili-ties, the institute has a full-scale replica of the U.S. Senate cham-ber where visitors can participate in simulated legislative action.

It also is designed to inspire visitors to answer JFK’s direc-

    t i v e — t o a s k themselves what they can do to help their coun-try. Just as the el-der Kennedys passed on the legacy of service in their family, t h e c u r r e n t genera t ion i s r e a c h i n g o u t through the in-stitute to encour-age all visitors to adopt the “make

the world a better place” mission. At the end, says Victoria Ken-

nedy, there is a wall where people can pledge to do good in their own communities, whether it’s volunteering at a school or bring-ing someone to the polls to vote.

As JFK said in that famous speech, “he energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it—and the glow from that ire can truly light the world.”

    LEMON-ALMOND STRATA

    WITH FRESH RASPBERRIES

    1. Lightly grease a 13x9-inch baking dish. Layer half of the bread in the pan. In small dollops, distribute lemon curd on top. Scatter the raspberries evenly. Layer remaining bread on top.2. Whisk together eggs, milk, almond extract, salt and sugar. Pour over bread. Sprinkle with almonds. Cover pan and refrigerate overnight or for at least 4 hours.3. Preheat oven to 350°F. Ask MarilynBy Marilyn vos Savant

Answer: Remove the letter “r” from each word and a

    new word is formed.

I haven’t heard o ne o f tho se wo nderfully lo w, deep male vo ices in years. Are the ho rmo nes in fo o ds affecting the vo ices o f men?

    —Jan W., Surfside Beach, S.C.

Men’s voices are not known to be changing, and the hormones in food plants and animals wouldn’t affect them, anyway. Male voices differ from each other (and from female voices, for that matter) for one main reason: the length and width of the vocal cords that develop early in life. That’s inluenced partly by testosterone and partly by genetic factors. Voice style—the cowboy versus the guy next door—also makes a difference; men can pitch their voices lower when they wish (ask your favorite guy to demonstrate, and you’ll get an earful) and they may even adopt the pitch they like best within their range. Remember, the bass and baritone are usually cast as the bad guys; the tenor is the one who gets the girl.

A puzzle: What do these wo rds have in co mmo n: friend, pastry, po rtable, remo te, varnish?—Basil N., Silver Spring, Md.

Study each word, readers, and don’t give up too quickly. It’s good brain exercise! The answer appears below.
