2 THE KAPELLE

A pressing out. A breathing out. Exhaling past vocal cords that cause the air to vibrate and past the tongue and through teeth and lips that form those vibrations in such a way that it makes our ears—and our hearts—tingle.

Expression. Taking a thought, feeling or emotion and making it audible—hesitant, confident, soothing, startling—through words with our friends and family, or through pitches with fellow musicians and audience members.

We encourage our students to play and sing expressively, with “expression”—to “say something” through the notes and phrases of music. We give of ourselves—conductors and players alike—when we make music. Whether or not the music is a direct expression of our faith, we are expressing our love of God, whose expression of love for us was in sending Jesus, whose expression of love for us was in giving his life for our redemption. God’s expression of love for us through Christ allows us to respond in thanks by offering of ourselves through God’s wonderful gift of music.

You, the audience, have expressed your support in this endeavor by being here. We are grateful for that. And you will, we hope, express appreciation of the efforts of our students through your applause. We are grateful for that, too. And, if you are related to any of the performers, you have expressed your love and care for them by bringing them to this point in their lives and by instilling in them a love for music. We are eternally grateful for that.

These gifted students before you today, our dedicated faculty, and all who so willingly serve our University wish to express our thanks to our Creator and Redeemer for the gift of music and for all of you. We hope you enjoy the concert.

The Kapelle is Concordia University Chicago’s premier choral ensemble, performing repertoire ranging from Renaissance to contemporary music. Known for delivering beautifully sung, thematic programs, the students spread the Gospel message to audiences throughout the U.S. and abroad. Since 2003, the Kapelle has traveled to Argentina, Canada, Chile, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Latvia, Poland, Russia and Scotland.

Beyond touring, the Kapelle actively performs in the Chicagoland area. They have collaborated with Chicago-area choirs and orchestras over the years, having performed with the Chicago Arts Orchestra, South Suburban Orchestra, and the Symphony of Oak Park-River Forest. The Kapelle recently sang Cantata 149 at the Bach Cantata Vespers series at Grace Lutheran Church, River Forest, and will once again join forces with the Symphony of Oak Park-River Forest and Chicago-area choirs in the performance of the Berlioz Te Deum at Symphony Center in downtown Chicago on April 20, 2020.

The Kapelle has also received the honor of performing headline programs at conferences for the Illinois chapters of the American Choral Directors Association and National Association for Music Education, and the national convocation of the Lutheran Education Association. Committed to serving the Church, the Kapelle visits congregations and schools throughout the country by leading workshops, performing assemblies and serving in worship.

The Kapelle has produced a sizeable list of recordings over the years, and many of them are available for purchase. Please refer to the available list of CDs of the Kapelle and Wind Symphony in this booklet, or visit our publicity table after the concert.

DR. CHARLES P. BROWN, CONDUCTOR

DR. CHARLES BROWN is professor of music and director of choral activities at Concordia University Chicago where

he conducts the Kapelle and Männerchor (men’s choir). He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in conducting, choral literature, singer’s diction, vocal techniques, and choral music education.

Dr. Brown actively guest conducts, working with such groups as Chicago Choral Artists and Lutheran Choir of Chicago. He’s been twice-honored to conduct choirs at district festivals

for the Illinois Music Educators Conference, and has conducted the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, Region 4 high school festival chorus. In his service to the Church, he has conducted the senior choir of the LCMS Institute on Liturgy, Preaching and Church Music, and annually conducts the Lutheran Youth Choral Festival in St. Louis, MO.

Specializing in topics of the male changing voice, conducting, and vocal techniques, Dr. Brown has presented many workshops at professional conferences with the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the LCMS Institute on Liturgy, Preaching, and Church Music, Lutheran Education Association (LEA), the American Guild

of Organists (AGO), the Lutheran Choir of Chicago, and the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians (ALCM). His continued passion for choral music education in churches and schools is demonstrated in the festivals and workshops he currently leads throughout the country.

Dr. Brown earned his bachelor and master degrees from Westminster Choir College and his Doctorate of Musical Arts in choral conducting and voice performance at the University of Arizona. He currently serves on the board of directors with Anima—Glen Ellyn Children’s Chorus, and has served on committees for past conferences of the LCMS Institute on Liturgy, Preaching and Church Music.
