Chamber Orchestra & Laudate
of Concordia University Chicago
Spring ConcertsDr. Maurice C. Boyer, Conductor
2 CHAMBER ORCHESTRA & LAUDATE
Expression. A pressing out. A breathing out. Engaging taut strings with a bow, pressing keys with fingers, beating drums with mallets. Exhaling past vocal cords or through lips and reeds pressed together so tightly that the air that escapes vibrates in such a way that it makes our ears—and our hearts—tingle.
Expression. Taking a thought, feeling or emotion and making it audible—hesitant, confident, soothing, startling—through words with our friends and family, or through pitches with fellow musicians and audience members.
We encourage our students to play and sing expressively, with “expression”—to “say something” through the notes and phrases of music. We give of ourselves—conductors and players alike—when we make music. Whether or not the music is a direct expression of our faith, we are expressing our love of God, whose expression of love for us was in sending Jesus, whose expression of love for us was in giving his life for our redemption. God’s expression of love for us through Christ allows us to respond in thanks by offering of ourselves through God’s wonderful gift of music.
You, the audience, have expressed your support in this endeavor by being here. We are grateful for that. And you will, we hope, express appreciation of the efforts of our students through your applause. We are grateful for that, too. And, if you are related to any of the performers, you have expressed your love and care for them by bringing them to this point in their lives and by instilling in them a love for music. We are eternally grateful for that.
These gifted students before you today, our dedicated faculty, and all who so willingly serve our University wish to express our thanks to our Creator and Redeemer for the gift of music and for all of you. We hope you enjoy the concert.

DR. MAURICE C. BOYER, CONDUCTORDR. MAURICE C. BOYER is is professor of music at Concordia University Chicago, where he conducts Chamber Orchestra, Schola Cantorum (the chapel choir) and
Laudate (women’s choir). Dr. Boyer is artistic director of Aestas Consort and music director of the American Kantorei of Saint Louis, MO. He is associate conductor of the Symphony
of Oak Park and River Forest. He has also served as assistant chorus master and guest chorus master with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.
Although born in the United States, Dr. Boyer began his musical training (piano, voice, and solfège) in Aix-en-Provence, France, where he lived until the age of eighteen. He holds a doctor of musical arts degree in orchestral conducting from the University of Maryland, College Park. His master of music is in choral conducting and his bachelor of music in sacred music (with piano as his
principal instrument). Both were earned at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, NJ. His principal conducting teachers have been Joseph Flummerfelt, Kenneth Kiesler and James Ross. He also studied theology at Princeton Theological Seminary.
Among Dr. Boyer’s areas of sustained interest and research are the intersection of music and theology, the sacred choral works of J. S. Bach—historical performance practice and theology—and the symphonic music of Mozart, Mahler and Sibelius.
JEREMY ZIMMERGUEST COMPOSER
Jeremy Zimmer is a Chicago-based composer and arranger. He first studied composition at Concordia University-Chicago where he took lessons from
Jonathan Stahlke and then continued his education, earning a master of music at DePaul University, studying with Seung-Won Oh and Christopher Wendell Jones. In addition to composing, he plays the organ and enjoys his position as assistant cantor at Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest.
LORI BOYERSOLOIST
Mrs. Lori Boyer is a professional conductor, teacher, and singer. She is currently the assistant music director of Anima - Glen Ellyn Children’s Chorus,
maintains a private voice studio, and serves as guest teacher/conductor for area school choral programs.
Prior to her work with Anima, Mrs. Boyer led a successful high school choral program, serving as chair of the fine arts department at Walther Christian Academy. She has also taught elementary and middle school choir and general music and has served as clinician and adjudicator for elementary, middle, and high school choral and solo/ensemble festivals.
Mrs. Boyer holds degrees in voice performance (Valparaiso University) and music education (Concordia University Chicago), and is pursuing a master of arts in music degree at Concordia University Chicago. An active freelancer in the Chicago area, she has sung professionally as a soloist and choir member with various ensembles in the Midwest, including Aestas Consort (Chicago), American Kantorei (St. Louis), St. Charles Singers and Light Opera Works (Evanston).
ADAM SCHWEYERSTUDENT SOLOIST
Music has been a part of Adam Schweyer’s life for as long as he can remember. He began his musical career with playing percussion in the sixth grade. In his playing
Adam constantly tries to exemplify a sense of musicianship, which he finds is more difficult with percussion than it is with any other instrument. Adam has been having an exciting year at Concordia-Chicago, taking advantage of many opportunities both musical and spiritual. He feels honored to be able to play with the excellent musicians at CUC, and to play as a testament to God who has given us the wonderful gift of music. He wishes to thank percussion instructor Bobby Everson for everything he has learned from him, as well as the rest of the phenomenal music faculty. Adam plans to be a music educator, and is looking forward to continuing to grow on that path during his time at Concordia-Chicago.
