The Hellenistic KingdomsPORTRAIT COINS AND HISTORYNORMAN DAVIS and COLIN M. KRAAY. With photographs by P. FRANK PURVEY

The remarkable series of coins reproduced in this book bear portraits of the monarchs who ruled the

Hellenistic kingdoms after Alexander the Great's death in 323 BC. Some of their names still linger in common

memory: Ptolemy of Egypt, Perseus of Macedon, Seleucus Nicator and Antiochus Epiphanes of Syria, and

Cleopatra, the last of the Ptolemies. These royal portrait coins are important contemporary documents of a

period for which evidence is scarce. From the titles and designs that these rulers chose for their coins, we are

given a glimpse of their character, policies and the guises in which they presented themselves to their subjects

They are our only sources for the physical appearance of most of the rulers of the time; and, apart from the

usually stylized representations of Egyptian pharaohs, they constitute the first series of portraits in human

history.With 204 illustrations and 3 maps 10 in. X 8 in. ISBN o 500 250367 ^8.50

Classical Greek Art480-330 BCJEAN CHARBONNEAUX, ROLAND MARTIN, FRANCOIS VILLARD

The art of Western civilization ultimately stems from the art of ancient Greece. It was during die fifth and

fourth centuries BC that Greek architects, sculptors, painters and craftsmen achieved those standards and

perfected those conventions to which the artists of Rome, Renaissance Italy and much of modern Europe have

been successively indebted.

In this study, the sequel to Archaic Greek Art: 620-480 BC, also in this series and by the same audiors,

Roland Martin discusses the architecture, Jean Charbonneaux the sculpture and Francois Villard the vase-painting

of the classical period. As Professor Villard writes, the era 'was a continuous phase of artistic creation, of

intense life and experimentation, unfolding in a climate of keen strife and deep-rooted dissension—bodi

national and political in the fifth century, further aggravated in the fourth by the economic and social crisis

and by the impending menace of the "barbarian" empires of Persia and Carthage'. The perfectly proportioned

creations of the Acropolis symbolize both the essence of classical Greek art, and the position of Athens, during

the fifth century under Pericles' guidance, as the artistic capital of the Greek world. After, at the most, fifty

years of precarious equilibrium, Greek art began to reflect the instability suffered by the city states during the

late fifth and early fourth centuries—until die conquests of Philip and Alexander removed not only die perils

which had beset them, but die independence which had inspired their writers, thinkers and artists.

The late Jean Charbonneaux, Member of die Institut de France and Member of die Acade'mie des

Inscriptions et Belle-Lettres, worked for most of his career at die Louvre, where he was General Inspector of

die Muse'es de France and (from 1930 until 1965) Professor of Greek and Roman Archaeology at die Ecole du

Louvre. Roland Martin, Director of Studies at die Ecole Practique des Hautes Etudes, was formerly Professor

of Archaeology at Dijon University. Francois Villard is Professor of Greek History at the Faculte' des Lettres

et des Sciences Humaines at Paris-Nanterre. Widi 436 illustrations, including 63 colour plates and 28 plans.

Professor Turner has completed theplay in blank verse, aiming at production on themodern stage, and his translation was producedby the BBC in 1971 and repeated in 1972.

Early VirgilWILLIAM BERGDr Berg's study marks a radical departure fromtraditional approaches to Virgilian pastoral. Heillustrates the use in both ancient and modernpoetry of a pastoral landscape to symbolize thepoet's 'place' of inspiration and creation, andsees the publication of the Bucolics as a literaryevent in which the self-consciousness of theTheocritean tradition finds its fullest measure. The Golden Age of the 'messianic' Eclogue IV,like the child who rules it, is interpreted as amonument to poetry rather than to politics. Theinfluence of fellow-poets on Virgil's early workis emphasized throughout.

The book may be read with pleasure both byscholar and general reader for it includes a Latintext with, on facing pages, a new English versetranslation of the Bucolics, indicating the ancientstructural divisions.
