FROM THE CORRIDOR WINDOW

Celebrating Celebrity at the Johns Hopkins Club. Some years ago I heard a Club board member ask Cem Baraz who was the most memorable world leader he had encountered at the Club. Immediately he responded with “Boris Yeltsin” (more about Boris to follow). This led me to pose the question to Cem; “Can you think of other celebrities who have been seen at the Club?” From memory, he produced a surprisingly long list that is remarkable in scope and diversity. It is a legion with heads of state (Brian Mulroney, Helmut Schmidt), Supreme Court Justices (Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Sandra Day O’Connor), royalty (Queen Sirikit of Thailand, Princess Grace of Monaco), media figures (Wolf Blitzer, Ted Koppel, Bob Schieffer, Jim McKay and others). Athletic figures (Brooks Robinson, Johnny Unitas, Cal Ripkin Jr. and others). Musicians and writers (Leonard Bernstein, Harry Belafonte, Steven King, Garry Trudeau). This is an abbreviated list – space limitations preclude listing all.

Boris Yeltsin, the first President of the Russian Federation was on an 11 city tour of the United States in 1989 when he spoke at the Johns Hopkins Club. Cem encountered him in the Library prior to an early morning speech at the “Community Conversations” series. He was pouring a clear liquid, presumably of Russian origin, into tall glasses for his gathered companions. His New York Times Obituary noted his “excessive fondness for alcohol.” He stunned the world when, in 1999, he volun-tarily relinquished power in accordance with constitutional mandates, he surrendered the reins of gov-ernment to one Vladimir Putin, who has yet to make an appearance at the Club.

When Cary Grant spoke at Johns Hopkins he was staying at the nearly contiguous President’s house. He was accompanied by his fifth wife, Barbara Harris. (If at first you do not succeed . . . ) The Club catered his meals and he was so taken by the salad dressing that he arrived at the Club’s door to query Cem about the recipe.

Harry Belafonte has been a speaker at the University. He underwent treatment for cancer at the Johns Hopkins Hospital apparently engendering a stay in Baltimore at which time he was a guest at the Club.

Senators Barbara Mikulksi and Paul Sarbanes are often seen at the Club which is not surprising as they are both members. Meet the Member — Mary Ellen Thomsen

You may recognize Mary Ellen Thomsen around the Club for her attendance at many Club events throughout the years. Maybe you recognize her by her sixteen years serv-ing on the Board of Governors, or that she was the first and only female President of the Club. Whatever it may be, you have more than likely seen her around the Club dur-ing her active thirty one year membership!

Mary Ellen is from Cranford, New Jersey. She graduated from Radcliffe College, where she studied American History. During her years of study, she served as the Editor of the Radcliffe Newspaper and worked for the Harvard Alumni Magazine for three years upon her graduation. She married George Thomsen, a Harvard law graduate. They up-rooted themselves and moved to Maryland

for George to work as a lawyer in Baltimore. Mary Ellen served as the third Headmistress of St. Paul’s School for Girls. While working for the school, she also began her Johns Hopkins journey in their Master’s program to pursue a degree in Liberal Arts. Her father-in-law, also a Hopkins grad, entertained the family at Sunday mid-day dinners at the Club, where there were only four entrees to choose from at the time. This is how Mrs. Thomsen began her interest in joining the Hopkins Club. Upon joining, she immediately became active in the Club, attending many events, her favorites being Valentine’s Day, the Book Circle, as well as New Year’s Eve, in which she brings a large group every year as a tradi-tion to ring in the New Year at the Club. Mary Ellen served on the Board of Governors for two terms—one term from 1994-2001 and the second term from 2006-2013. When she was asked to serve as the Club’s President in 2001, she was thrilled. During her tenure, she worked with the Membership Committee to open membership to other Ivy League schools and Goucher. She is “very, very proud” of this.

Mary Ellen loves staying active in the community. She loves to volunteer and serves on many boards of several private secondary schools, universities, and non profits. She has served as the Chairwoman of the Board at Union Memorial Hospital, a Commissioner for the Baltimore City Community Relations Commission, as well as the President of the Board for Roland Park Country School, just to name a very few on her long list of community activities. She and four other women founded the Brown Memorial Weekday School in 1964 which is a school through the Brown Memorial Church. She is currently a Board member at Gilchrist Hospice Care, as well as the Maryland State Commission on Aging. In what little free time she has, Mary Ellen also enjoys reading and her current book of choice is The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben.

A Moment with Chef Patrick Corner

Chef’ sSpring approaches and I can’t help but think of one of my favorite occasions and that is Saint Patty’s Day. Parades and a

feeling of frivolity takes place around the globe. It is a cultural and religious remembrance of Ireland’s foremost patron saint, Saint Patrick. The day celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general, while also celebrating the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival. Most modern celebrations have been greatly influenced by those of the Irish diaspora, particularly those that developed in North America. When I think of St. Patrick’s Day, I always think of Irish Soda Bread… sliced with loads of creamy butter or maybe even some smoked salmon.

Every family has its own recipe. Some like it sweet with honey, sugar or dried fruit (commonly called “spotted dick”) while oth-ers prefer seeds, bran or oats for a healthier bread. Any way you like it fresh made, fresh from the oven, it is delicious bread.

IRISH BROWN SODA BREAD 8”x 5” inch loaf pan3 cups whole wheat flour1 cup all – purpose flour1 tsp. baking soda1 tsp. salt1¼ cups buttermilk1 large egg, beaten2 tbsp. pure olive oil

Preheat oven to 375. Spray the loaf pan with a pan coating spray like “Pam.” In a large bowl, whisk both flours with the baking soda and salt. In a small bowl, whisk buttermilk with the egg and oil. Stir into dry ingredients with a wooden spoon until a rough dough forms. Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and knead gently to smooth (does not take a lot, the dough will be moist). Place dough into the loaf pan and tap down a few times on the table. Bake approximately 45 minutes. The bread should sound hollow once removed and tapped. Cool to room temperature and gently wrap in a towel. Slice, serve and enjoy!

CLUB’S BOOK CIRCLEThursday, March 15, 2018 6:30 pm

We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter, is the Book Circle’s next book. When Georgia Hunter was fifteen years old, she learned that she came from a family of Holocaust survivors. We Were the Lucky Ones was born of her quest to uncover her family’s staggering history. Inspired by her family’s story, who were separated at the start of World War II, determined to sur-vive – and to reunite – We Were the Lucky Ones is a tribute to the triumph of hope and love against all odds.

It is the spring of 1939 and three genera-tions of the Kurc family are doing their

best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows closer. The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance, not of the increasing hardships threatening Jews in their hometown of Radom, Poland. But soon the horrors overtaking Europe will become inescapable and the Kurcs will be flung to the far corners of the world, each desper-ately trying to navigate his or her own path to safety.

As one sibling is forced into exile, another attempts to flee the continent while others struggle to escape certain death, either by working gruel-ing hours on empty stomachs in the factories of the ghetto or by hiding as gentiles in plain sight. Driven by an unwavering will to survive and by the fear that they may never see one another again, the Kurcs must rely on hope, ingenuity, and inner strength to persevere.

When we meet, we look forward to an interesting discourse. The Dinner and Discussion will begin at 6:30 pm however you are invited to join other members of the Book Circle for cocktails beginning at 6:00 pm. Reservations are required. Cost: $31.00 plus surcharge and sales tax. Cocktails not included.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson, during his tenure as Britain’s poet laureate, pub-lished a narrative poem about the life and love of a merchant sailor named Enoch Arden. Three decades later, in 1897, Richard Strauss set the poem as a recitation for speaker and piano, a popular form at the time. In this session, Judith Krummeck and John Nauman will introduce and perform this rarity, which has previously attracted such notable pairings as Jon Vickers with Marc - Andre Hamelin and Patrick Stewart with Emanuel Ax.

Judith Krummeck, M.F.A., is a broadcaster and writer. She is the eve-ning drive time host for WBJC, Maryland’s classical music station, and she is the author of Beyond the Baobab, a collection of personal essays on the theme of immigration. McKIM CENTERSince 1999 the Club has been collecting Christmas presents and do-nating them to the McKim Community Center in Baltimore City. Again, this past Christmas, thanks to the generous donations from our members, we were able to deliver lots of gifts to the center for their annual Christmas party. We received a letter of thanks from Dwight Warren, the Center’s Executive Director who was most appreciative of the Club’s continued support. Thanks everyone!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS HOPKINS CLUB STAFFStaff members enjoyed holiday bonuses and a festive holiday bash after a busy season, thanks to the generous contributions of our members to the Employee Holiday Fund. Dressed to the nines, everyone celebrated with Hors d’oeuvre, a Buffet Dinner and a DJ who kept the place rockin’.

The evening’s highlight was the announcement of the 2017 Employee of the Year when General Manager Cem Baraz presented the award to Russell Glasgow. Russell received at $750 cash prize and a plaque as well as hugs and applause from his co-workers. Congratulations Russell!
