2 JOHNS HOPKINS CLUB

Welcome New Members

Meet the Member — Anne Hopkins

Anne Hopkins has been a member since the 1950’s. Both she and her late husband, Samuel, appreciated the family friendly atmosphere which made it a natural place to bring friends and family. Sam, a member of the Class of 1934, served on the Club’s Board in the days of Dr. Huntington Williams and Dr. Singewald who put great energy into a fine refurbishment.

Sunday lunch (pre-brunch days) was a popular meal for three generations of her family and small children enjoyed running on the lawn without falling into the pond. Special gatherings took place in the private rooms or the Eisenhower Room. She mentioned the Hopkins family use of the Eisenhower Room for a lunch for

Missy Hopkins Smith’s graduation from Garrison Forest School (she is now the mother of three), Holt Hopkins’ engagement party (he is now the father of two), Sam Hopkins’ birthdays (the last being his 95th) and a memorial lunch for Dr. Jim Hopkins, a member of the Class of 1936.

Mrs. Hopkins feels a little nostalgia for the aroma of yeast bread rising which was baked daily on the premises. Children wanted to eat only freshly baked warm rolls. She recalled that when women were no longer excluded from the main dining room at lunchtime, the Club was easier to use. A favorite room at Christmas was and still is the library with its decorated tree and warming fire. This became possible after the pool tables went upstairs. That move made the youngsters unhappy as they were not allowed alone on the upper floor. She noted that her own children wrote notes of protest about this and dropped them in the suggestion box.

The Club has often been a meeting place for academic and community groups. The del-egates from all over Maryland to the 1967 Constitutional Convention (in which she had served) held a reunion a few years after they had completed their work. They filled the first floor facilities.

Mr. Hopkins always placed great emphasis on history. He often reminded his children and grandchildren that they would honor the memory of Mr. Marburg whose endow-ment still makes possible the benefits we enjoy today.

A Moment with Chef Patrick

Chef’ What says comfort and warmth

more than breakfast for dinner? It seems that these days we just can’t get enough of the soul satisfying deliciousness that we all crave. Light, moist, buttery waffles, creamy and fluffy golden pancakes drizzled in gooey pecan maple syrup. A lavish molten flow of yolkey goodness from farm fresh eggs over a sizzling seared black pepper breakfast steak. The thoughts and smells make your mouth water with delight.

Survey results continue to indicate breakfast for dinner is a family favorite. 90% of Americans

say they eat breakfast for dinner. 53% say they eat breakfast at least once a month for dinner, and nearly 25% eat breakfast for dinner once a week.

So maybe get in your jammies, flannel preferred, for a breakfast brimming with yumminess for dinnertime. It’s all in the family night.

Here’s a delicious recipe you may want to try, light and fluffy Pumpkin Pancakes.

1¼ cup flour2 tbsp sugar2 tsp baking powder½ tsp cinnamon½ tsp ground ginger½ tsp nutmeg½ tsp saltPinch of ground cloves1 cup milk6 tbsp canned pumpkin2 tbsp melted butter1 egg

Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, spices and salt in a bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, pumpkin, butter and egg. Fold mixture into dry ingredients. Spray or grease skillet and heat over medium heat. Pour ¼ cup batter for each pancake. Cook for about 3 minutes on each side. Serve with butter and syrup. Makes six 6” pancakes.
