Hardships Endured by the Settlers
Conflict with Native Americans 14,000 Native
Americans lived in the Chesapeake region where Jamestown is located.
English gave “peace” offerings to the tribes Native Americans were suspicious of true intentions.
Relationships never eased.
Unrealistic Expectations Many of the
settlers did not want to do any of the hard labor that was required to cultivate the land.
Settlers were too busy looking for gold hoping to get rich then working the land.
Location Jamestown was
located near a swamp and pools of standing water with disease carrying mosquitos
Colonists began to suffer from dysentery, typhus, and malaria.
Starvation Lack of food and
healthy drinking water
Saved by the Native Americans who gave them food
Poor leadership Lack of leadership
People would fight over minor issues instead of creating solutions for problems
In England people glorified Jamestown
1623 5,500 English decided to migrate to this great land
4,000 of them died shortly after arriving
