Two sweethearts of the KMA staff arestriking a most significant pose for themonth of February. Symbolic of the oneday of the year when sweethearts extendgestures of endearment, Jerry Josephsonand Josie Dee Modrow were a perfectmatch for our cover picture.

Jerry is seven years old and is in FirstGrade at Forest Park School. Josie Deeis six and attends First Grade at Central.Jerry is the son of Jack Josephson, one ofour engineers, and Josie is the daughter ofDuane Modrow, our Guide Editor. Thiscould be the beginning of a buddingromance.

Heuer Recreates B. Goodman at Carnegie

THIS ISN'T MIKE HEUER AT CARNEGIE HALL, BUT HE WAS "THERE". It wasexactly twenty years ago on the night of January 16th that Benny Goodman and hisfamous orchestra played the first Jazz Concert ever held at Carnegie Hall.This historical event started as a publicity stunt, but gathered such enormous momen-tum through public demand that Benny Goodman himself couldn't get tickets by con-cert time.Fortunately the concert was recorded, but it was years later that Benny's daughter dis-covered the old recordings stored in a closet. Their quality was so excellent it wasdecided to put them in album form.Upon playing these new albums (pictured above), Mike Heuer became engrossed withthe idea of recreating the Carnegie Concert as if it were happening "now". He work-ed with tape recorder and splicer, introducing announcer and sound effects, until hehad a very close facsimile of the real thing.Mike passed the word along to the east coast that he was doing a special program onKMA, recreating the Goodman Concert. It was Mike's fondest hope that Benny Good-man would hear of it, and sure enough, Benny climaxed the program by calling longdistance from New York.

There is an old sea chant which says,"When air gets light,The glass falls low,Batten down tight,For the winds will blow."

We still have several weeks of winter left,and we will watch to see when the air getslight and the glass falls low. Many earlypredictions indicated a rather severe winterwith heavy snows. However, I haven'theard many complaints about the severityof our winter to date.

One of the things we do at our house oncold nights is journey to the basement fora game of pool. The picture below showsthe family engaging in one of our frequentgames. The pool table was a Xmas presentfrom the fine folks at KMA and the MaySeed Company. There is also a top thatcovers the table which converts it into aping pong table. Needless to say, we havelots of fun with the Xmas present and aregrateful to those who presented it to us.

I am encouraging the girls to bring theirfriends in to use either the pool table orping pong table. I would rather have themin the basement with their friends thanelsewhere. I recall my folks had both apool table and ping pong table in the base-ment when I was in high school. Everyevening a group of myfriends came by to use therecreation room. We hadlots of fun and the parentsknew exactly where theirchildren were. I don't thinkthe words "juvenile delin-quents" had been thoughtof at that time. If so, theycertainly didn't apply to anyone of us because we were inthe basement entertainingourselves and staying out ofmischief. This is the reasonwhy I am encouraging thegirls to feel free to use thebasement for themselves andtheir friends.

ed./ VI"because of circustances beyond control.Frank Field returned to the hospital forsurgery and was off the air the entiremonth. He is improving rapidly and shouldreturn to the air in the near future.

I had surgery performed on my jaw-bone and didn't broadcast for two weeks.However, my operation wasn't too seriousand I am back on the airlanes once againfeeling fine. I particularly want to thankthe fellows who did extra duty and pinch-hitting for me while I was recuperating.

The second half of the school year hasstarted in most schools. Annette who is inthe seventh grade, had semester tests forthe first time. She was quite concernedabout them, but passed every subject with-out too much trouble. She particularlylikes history and geography and finds themquite easy. She says arithmetic and Englisharen't quite as easy. However, she doeswell in school. I often wonder when theyfind time to study with all the things theyhave to do. Karen, who is in the fourthgrade, isn't quite as busy. She has alwaysliked school and so far has had good grades.

Eddie is too young for school. However,he has already started a sales career.Recently he was in a local grocery store

I just came from a visit with Frank andJennie in their home, where he is recup-erating from his final (we hope!) opera-tion.

By the time you read this, Frank willprobably be back on the air. But sincethis is written weeks ahead of publication,he asked me to handle the chore for himthis month.

First, a word about his operation. Itseems that the stomach muscles throughwhich the doctors have had to cut didn'twant to stay sewed together-in fact, theypulled apart three times. I can assureyou they won't again! This time, the doc-tor inserted a 5 -inch square of stainlesssteel screen wire, then sewed it into placewith wire. As additional insurance, hethen removed an 8 -inch strip of muscletissue from Frank's leg and transplantedit into the stomach incision, stitching it

into place over the wire patch. Frank maycome apart at some other seams, but he'ssure that particular incision is zippered upfor good.

After all this, though, he is feeling fine.Lots of rest and good care are workingwonders, and he's already looking forwardto resuming his radio and television work.

Incidentally, the doctor put him on ahigh protein diet, with lots of milk andeggs. And Frank can't drink milk! Theideal answer seemed to be custard pie. . .

and Jennie has been baking one a day forhim. He loves 'em, but she says she doesn'tcare if she never sees another one.

At the risk of swelling Frank's ego, Imust say that it has taken a lot of us tofill his shoes. Joe Hunter and Jack Gowinghave been handling his radio shows, whileJohn Topham, Wayne McMannama, EverettIvie and I from the seed company and War-ren Nielson of KMA have been trying tokeep up the television schedule.

Everybody around here will be glad tohave Frank back in the harness. . .butthose seven men above are going to beespecially happy, believe me.

"Moon Signs"Every year the May Seed Company

prints many thousands of "Moon SignDates" which Frank Field distributes forthe asking. Many people follow the MoonSigns very closely, and apparently withgood results. Just recently a lady wrote inthat she never believed in the signs, but aneighbor did, and always seemed to havesuch a better garden, that this year she wasgoing to follow the moon signs too. Be-sides gardening, the "Moon Sign Dates"give favorable times for such things ascutting timber, pruning trees, killing nox-ious growth, harvesting various crops,making sauerkraut and soap, cutting hairto either retard or stimulate growth, fish-ing, and many other daily functions affect-ed by the moon. RIBBON COOKIES2 /2 c. sifted flour1/2 t. salt1/2 t. baking powder1 c. butter% c. sugar1 egg unbeatenred food coloring1 t. vanilla1/2 c. chopped candied cherries1 oz. (1 sq.) unsweetened chocolate

melted1/4 c. chopped walnutsSift flour, salt and baking powder to-

gether. Cream butter and sugar in mixingbowl, add the egg and vanilla and beatwell gradually stir in the flour mixture andmix well. Divide into three equal parts.Set one aside for vanilla layer. To one addthe cherries and enough red coloring totint a light pink. Blend the chocolate andnuts into the other part. Chill separatelyuntil it can be handled. Shape each into anoblong 12 inches long, 2 inches wide and 1/2inch thick. Put one on top of the otherwith the pink in the center. Chill again.Slice into. 1/2 inch thick slices and bake onungreased baking sheet about 10 minutesat 400°. Cool 5 minutes then remove torack. Makes about 5 dozen.* *

SWEDISH MOVER WAGONA-3 c. sifted flour

2 t. baking powder1 t. soda

B-1 c. shorteningC-1 c. sugar

2 eggs beaten4 T. sweet milk1 t. lemon extract

Sift A into mixing bowl. Add B and cutin as for pie crust. Combine C, add to1st mixture and mix well. Roll to 1/2 inchthick on floured board. Cut with flouredcutter in any desired shape. Bake about10 to 12 minutes at 375°.

dry ingredients and add, add cream andfruits. Make into a roll, wrap in waxedpaper and put in refrigerator over night.Slice in 1/2 inch slices. Bake on ungreasedcooky sheet, 10 to 12 minutes at 400°

BLACK WALNUT COOKIES6 c. sifted flour1 t. salt1/2 t. soda1 t. cream of tartar

c. butter21/2 c. brown sugar packed1/2 c. white sugar2 eggs2 t. vanilla11/2 c. black walnut meatsSift flour, salt, soda and cream of tar-

tar together. Cream butter, add sugarsgradually and beat till fluffy, add eggs andvanilla, grind or chop nuts and add, thenadd flour mixture and blend well. Shapeinto rolls about 3 inches thick. Wrap inwaxed paper and chill. Slice about 1/2 inchthick, bake on ungreased cooky sheet 10 to12 minutes at 350° to 375°.

COOKIESMelt 2 squares unsweetend chocolate over

hot water. Mix together thoroughly:1 c. soft shortening1/2 c. sugar1/2 c. brown sugar packed2 eggsAdd the melted chocolate and blend well.

Sift together and add:2% c. sifted flour1/2 t. soda1 t. saltMix well with hands. Press and mold

into a long smooth roll about 21/2 inchesin diameter. Wrap in waxed paper andchill until stiff. With sharp knife cut inslices 1/2 inch thick. Place on ungreasedbaking sheet and bake about 8 minutes at400°.

* * * *CHERRY REFRIGERATOR COOKIES2 c. sifted flour11/2 t. baking powder1,. t. salt1/2 c. shortening1 c. sugar2 eggs beatenjuice and grated rind of 1/2 lemon1/2 c. chopped pecans1/2 c. candied cherriesSift flour, baking powder and salt to-

gether. Cream the shortening and sugaruntil light and fluffy, add eggs and mixwell. Add juice and rind, nuts and cherries,add the flour and mix well. Shape intorolls, wrap in waxed paper and chill in re-frigerator. Slice into 1/2 inch thick slices,place on lightly greased cooky sheet, bake8 to 10 minutes at 400°.

ingredients in order given. Roll into ballsthe size of a walnut or smaller. Dip tophalf in cold water and then in sugar. Placeon greased cooky sheet, sugar side up.Leave space between to spread. Bake in425' oven until lightly browned. Makes31/2 to 4 dozen cookies.

1 c. sifted powdered sugar1 c. butter1 egg1 t. vanilla2 c. sifted cake flour1 t. cream of tartar1 t. soda dissolved in 2 T. hot waterCream sugar, with the butter. Add egg

and vanilla. Add sifted dry ingredientsalternately with the soda and water. Mixall well. Chill 2 hours. Roll into balls,flatten, put pecan half on top of each cookyBake 8 to 10 minutes in 375° oven. Re-move from pan to cool.

1 c. butter11/2 c. firmly packed brown sugar2 eggs1 c. sour cream1 t. orange rind1/2 t. salt2 t. vanilla2 t. baking powder

1 t. soda31/2 c. flourCream butter and sugar until fluffy and

light. Add eggs and beat. Add orange rindand vanilla. Sift dry ingredients together,add to butter mixture alternately with sourcream. Drop by teaspoonfuls on cookysheet. Bake in 350 oven about 15 min-utes. Frost with powdered sugar moist-ened with orange juice. Add teaspoonorange rind, grated.

ICE CREAM COOKIES

6 T. butter6 T. powdered sugar1 egg yolk1 t. vanilla1 c. flourCream butter and sugar, add egg yolk

and vanilla. Combine with flour. Roll intoballs or crescents. Dip in unbeaten eggwhite and then in ground nuts. Bake onungreased tins in 300' oven until delicatelybrowned.

OATMEAL ICE BOX COOKIES1 c. shortening1 c. white sugar1 c. brown sugar2 eggs1 t. vanilla11/, c. sifted flour1 t. salt1 t. soda3 c. quick oatmeal1/2 c. chopped black walnutsCream shortening and sugars. Add eggs

and vanilla. Beat well. Sift together dryingredients and add to creamed mixture.Stir in oats and nuts. Mix well. Formdough in rolls or shape in cans, 1 to 11,inch thick, wrap in waxed paper, foil orsaran. Chill thoroughly. Slice 1/4 inchthick. Bake on ungreased sheet in mod-erate oven 350' about 10 minutes or untillightly browned. Makes about 4 dozen.

It seems to me that you folks on farmscan have much more influence in formu-lating government farm programs if youwill let your wants be known. Farm organ-izat.ons certainly have their place, but youas individuals, writing letters to yourcongressman, are much more effective. Ithink the day is gone when lobbyists, assuch, will be really effective. In the firstplace, they are recognized as pressuregroups by the congressman they contact.That. in itself builds an invisible wall be-tween them. Most congressmen are a little"fec up" with pressure groups partly be-cause they have, too often, been sold a billof goods later to find out that many oftheir constituents do not necessarily agreewitk the policies of the pressure groupsinvdved.

I have been in the offices of many of ourcongressmen and all of them tell me thatletters from you, the voters, are the mostimportant guide they have. They will payattention to you, because you are represent-ing only yourself - and you are a voter.Lets consider for example, one congress -mar.. If he were to receive 10 letters fromvoters in his district, all in basic agree-ment on a particular issue, he would con-sider that as much better evidence than ifa farm organization representative were tocall on him every day for two weeksattempting to sell an idea. There are ex-cep-lons to everything, of course, but thisI believe to be the basic true situation atpresent in Washington. Your letters tocongressmen need not be fancy to be effec-tive. As a matter of fact, a letter writtenin bng hand on an ordinary tablet is betterthat one written on a fancy letterhead.YoL the voters are in a position to deter -mire how your elected representatives willvote on every issue - if you will just takethe time to tell them what you want done.

I doubt if farm -state congressmencan muster enough strength to get appro-priations necessary to really bolster thefarm economy very much. Whether youlike it or not, you will have to depend moreand more on the laws of supply and de-mand, but with still enough governmentcontrol mixed into your business to con-tinually mess up the entire farm economy.Most congressmen would be willing, so itappears, to throw the farmer to the wolvesand let you, the farmer, fight your ownbattles.

partment. Evalyn makes up the programschedules each day, and La Donna assem-bles the continuity book, putting in thecommercials for the day's broadcast from5 a.m. to midnight. All have an import-ant part in helping keep KMA runningsmoothly.

Making glamorous desserts has beenlots of fun for KMA's Homemaker BER-NICE CURRIER this past month and themembers of the Altrusa Club, Business andProfessional Women and church organiza-tions have thoroughly enjoyed eating them.Even the titles of the desserts make youdrool. . .Pineapple Angel Torte, GlitterDessert, Lemon Angel Food Cake dessertand Mother Eisenhower's Lemon Jelly Cake,Bernice likes to try out recipes beforegiving them on the air, and when it comesher time to entertain at a meeting, that iswhen she tries the more elaborate recipes.They all proved perfectly delicious and willbe recipes to go into her file of wonderfuldesserts.

How you gonna' tell if the school busis coming, when its so foggy you can't seedown the road ? Thats the problem BRUCEand KAREN FALK faced. It was sofoggy and cold they thought they would

wait inside the house untilthe bus came into view, thenrun and catch it at the topof the hill. But the first thingthey knew the bus whiz-zed by the house and theyhad missed it. That meantthe family had to drive themto school. Tippy the dog,thinks she should go toschool with the children, soshe has to be chained upwhen its bus time. THEFARMER'S WIFE usuallygives her dog "Yummy" forstaying home. FLORENCEsays she can almost guagethe temperature, by the num-ber of cats who come out tobrave the weather. Theyhave seven cats on the farm,and if it's real cold, onlyFuzz Bomb with her reallong warm hair, will put inan appearance at the kitchendoor. The others keep undershelter until it moderates.

Zip, the new white parakeet at the homeof engineer DON BURRICHTER doesn'thave a very large vocabulary yet! Conse-quently, he overworks one word he doesknow. . ."pretty". He'll happily chirp awaysaying: "Pretty Bird", "Pretty Boy","Pretty Baby" and "Pretty Pretty". Inci-dentally, Zip got a mighty big welcome asa replacement for Zeke who flew out thedoor one day and never returned. The fam-ily missed Zeke so much, they were soonlooking over the birds at the May SeedCompany for one to take his place. Zip is3 months old, and is sitting "pretty" as faras a home is concerned, for the BURRICH-TERS all love him!

Imagine Program Director DEANNAVEN's surprise to find the road hethought he was traveling out of ghost townNevadville in Colorado, was not a road atall. The map didn't even show a road.DEAN and wife, and his brother, "Sugar"Harrison and wife of Corning, were spend-ing a week's vacation in Denver in Janu-uary, when they decided to drive up aroundthe old mining camp at Central City andsee if they could find the Glory Hole wheregold was discovered. But they took thewrong turn and ended up going thruNevadville, a ghost town. From there theydrove on up into the gulch It was an inter-esting trip, but they were surprised to findthey had really been pioneering as theirtrip thru the aspens wasn't on a road atall. They were just wending their wayaround the mountain!

How lucky can a feller be ? Randy, 4year old son of JACK GOWING asked fora baby sister for Christmas and that's ex-actly what he got. In fact, she was bornon Christmas night, and looks a great deallike her handsome young brother. Natur-ally Randy wanted to be good to her thefirst night she came home from the hospi-tal, so he tried to give her some crackers.Julie Dawn didn't feel quite up to eatingcrackers yet, but her refusal didn't dauntRandy's affection, as he spends a lot oftime going to the bedroom to take a peekat her in her crib.

While making a fresh green salad forsupper one evening, ED MAY had a"looker on" in the person of his young son.Thinking Eddie, Jr. might like a fresh car-rot, he handed him one to eat. After takinga few bites, Eddie looked up and said:"What's up Doc ?" Yes, Eddie is a BugsBunny fan!

Lots of "little ones" to look after now atthe JACK GOWING farm. Fourteen newspring lambs including four sets of twinshave been born, and two new Black Angusheifer calves. Of course, the most import-ant arrival, is the new baby daughterJulie Dawn who arrived Christmas Day.With seventeen "babies" to look after, itkeeps Jack pretty busy.

Here's a word of warning to you house-wives with garbage disposals in your kit-chen sink. Don't leave your wrist watchon the kitchen window. Because you mighthave an unfortunate accident like FRAN-CIS MAY RANKIN, whose watch fell intothe sink and was all broken up in the dis-posal. As soon as she realized what washappening she immediately stopped themachine, but it was too late. The watchwas crushed beyond repair.

Apparently Holly Nielson has inheritedher mother's love for music. Holly willcelebrate her fourth birthday February 20,and is looking forward to the event, inhopes she will get a baby piano. She enjoyspicking out nursery rhymes on her mother'sbig piano, but would love to have one ofher very own. Even though she is stillyoung, Holly can carry a tune very well, soI imagine her birthday wish for a toy pianowill be fulfilled.

All the basketball fans within 100 milesof Shenandoah probably are wonderinghow KMA handles so many scores andtelephone calls every Tuesday and Fridaynight on Fast Break. It is a big job andtakes four staff members to answer thecalls and prepare the returns for RalphChilds on the mike. Many times the callsare coming in so thick and fast on a wholebattery of telephones, that the staff isdoing a "Fast Break" themselves, up anddown the hall, rushing the reports to thestudio. Pictured on this page is Neal Bach-man, one of KMA's salesmen handing abasketball report to Ralph who is busy an-nouncing and keeping track of all thetowns that are reporting. A Letter From Bernice CurrierDear Homemakers:

My letter writing is usually done on in-spiration; so when I come right up againsta dead -line and the office says "now youget that letter written or else __ __" mymind goes blank just like it used to inschool when the teacher, in exasperation,would say, "We are going to have whisper-ing recess. Everybody may whisper to theone across the aisle." Nobody could thinkof anything to say.

I'm sitting on the davenport in the diningroom which is my office and broadcastingroom. My big old desk is covered withrecipe files, letters, a glass of water fortaking my Guardian 12 Plus vitamin everymorning. The microphone glares at medaring me to think of a wonderful recipe togive tomorrow morning and then find thetime to give it and also have time to checkit. Sometimes the microphone smiles andeverything goes so smoothly that I knowI must have skipped some important itemand I check hurriedly in my mind only tofind Ovenglayze lurking back there waitingimpatiently for it's moment of triumph. Soit goes --this enthralling business which iscalled "Radio".

One of the things I like about you Home-makers is your very real and genuineinterest in homemaking. And that em-braces so many activities, jobs and profes-sions. Your letters show interest in In-terior Decorating, problems of raisingchildren, recipes, care of electrical equip-ment, nursing, education and balancedmeals for your family or for yourself alone.Also you are interested in civic and nationalcharities and it is heart warming to knowwhat you are doing for someone else. Thankyou for your letters. This morning I readyou a letter I had received from Lola Tay-lor Hemphill of Omaha, Nebraska, whosebook of poems I use so many times on theair. She has just sent her Christmas cardsto the Presbyterian Mission in Taegu,Korea where they are used to help createinterest in Bible reading. So if you haven'tsent yours yet, send the ones that havereligious meaning or Bible references onthem. You do not need to cut away thewriting unless you do it to lighten the post-age, which is a good idea too. The addressagain is:

Mrs. Hemphill also sent me a recipe for aLEMON ANGEL FOOD DESSERT that Iam going to serve when I have the AltrusaDessert meeting here in about a week. It

isn't difficult to make, it has eye appeal,and tastes wonderful. To make it you teara regular sized angel food cake into bitesize pieces, and arrange in alternate layerswith a custard, in an angel food cake pan.Chill over -night in refrigerator, unmold ontray, cut in slices and serve either with orwithout whipped cream. To make thecustard, beat 6 egg yolks until thick andlemon colored, gradually beat in 34 c.sugar, add 34 c. lemon juice and 11/2 t.grated lemon rind. Cook this in top ofdouble boiler over gently boiling water, orin saucepan over very low heat, stirringconstantly until it coats a spoon. Add 1package plain gelatin soaked in 1/4 c. coldwater. Stir until dissolved. Beat 6 eggwhites until stiff but not dry then beat ingradually 34 c. sugar. Then fold this intothe custard until completely blended. Theyellow and white of the custard and cake isvery attractive.

I have had my front room upstairs paint-ed a light green in the rubber base paint.The walls and woodwork are the samecolor, the ceiling is an off white. This weekthey will get the carpeting laid, I hope. Itis a golden brown with a faint rose cast intweed. The tweed carpetings are verypopular right now and I think they willhold their popularity for several years. Butwhether or not they do is immaterial be-cause I don't change carpeting with thechanging styles. The curtains in that roommatch the walls and woodwork. Thepainter even painted the wires holding thelarge mirror. I can't report much aboutmy family this time. Since Christmas theyhaven't stormed the castle with letters, butI haven't done so well either. When I hadthe basement walls cemented I was cata-pulted into a job of house-cleaning that allhad to be done in two days on account ofa committee meeting I had scheduled forhere and also the Business and ProfessionalWomen's Board meeting that was heldhere. The draperies, walls, woodwork andfurniture had to be cleaned as well as thecarpet, cupboards and dishes. But that isone of the trials and vicissitudes of beinga house -keeper, homemaker, mother, grand-mother and broadcaster and isn't it fun ?Time and space are both running out sobe listening every morning at 8:30, Mondaythru Saturday when we have our daily visit.Until then - Bless your hearts, Goodbye

HOMEMAKER'S VISITBy BERNICE CURRIER

BAKED CORNED -BEEF RING5 c. corned -beef cooked and ground2 c. fine bread crumbs3 T. chopped onion3 T. butter2 t. horse radish112 t. dry mustard113 c. milk2 eggs slightly beatenCombine the corned -beef and bread

crumbs. Saute the onion in the butteruntil lightly browned, add to the corned -beef. Then add remaining ingredients andmix well. Pack into a greased casseroleor greased ring mold and bake 45 min-utes at 375°. Turn out on large servingplatter and garnish with new potatoesbrushed with melted butter and sprinkledwith parsley, and boiled baby carrots.Wedges of cabbage freshly cooked in saltedwater can also be served with it.

FRUIT JUICE DRESSING(For Fruit Salad)

1 egg yolk1/4 t. dry mustard1/4 t. salt1 t. sugar

c. olive oil1/4 c. pineapple juice1/4 c. lemon juice2 T. orange juice2 T. maraschino juiceBeat egg yolk, add mustard, salt and

sugar. Add the oil gradually, beating con-stantly. Add fruit juices gradually andbeat thoroughly or put in a screw top jarand shake well. Shake well just beforeputting on salad. Makes 11x, cups.

SOUR CREAM DRESSING(For Vegetable Salad

1 c. sour cream1/4 c. vinegar or lemon juice1 t. salt2 T. sugardash cayenne pepper1/2 t. grated onionCombine all ingredients, beat until stiff.

Makes about 11/2 cups.* *

OLD FASHIONED LEMON PUDDINGc. dry bread or zweiback or cake

crumbs2 c. milk

c. margarine12 c. sugar3 eggs separated3 T. lemon juice2 t. grated lemon rindSoak crumbs in the milk. Cream the

margarine and sugar together until lightand fluffy. Beat the yolks, add to thecreamed mixture. Add lemon juice andrind and the crumb mixture. Beat thewhites until stiff, fold into first mixture.Turn into a greased 1 quart baking dish.Bake about 45 minutes at 325°.

PIONEER BREAD PUDDING2 c. stale but not dry bread cubes2 c. milk3 T. butter1/4 c. sugar2 eggsdash salt1/4 t. vanillaPlace bread cubes in a quart buttered

baking dish. Scald the milk with the but-ter and sugar. Beat eggs slightly, add thesalt then stir in the warm milk and vanilla.Pour over the bread cubes. Set the bak-ing dish in a pan containing warm waterUp to the level of the pudding and bakeabout 1 hour at 350 , or until a knife comesout clean when inserted in center of pud-ding. Makes 4 to 6 servings. Serve warmwith plain cream, currant jelly or a lemonpudding sauce.Lemon Pudding Sauce :

1., c. sugar1 T. cornstarch1 c. boiling water2 T. butter1 T. grated lemon rind3 T. lemon juice1/s t. saltCombine sugar and cornstarch, add boil-

ing water slowly and stir until dissolved.Cook slowly stirring constantly until thick-ened and clear. Remove from heat and addremaining ingredients. Serve warm.

Heartiest of Greetings to you thisFebruary from the farm kitchen ! ! !

Recipes this month are really designedfor that extra special touch, whether forparties or your own family (they like partyfare too, you know.)

The Buttermilk White Cake is an excel-lent recipe. It has not nor will it be givenon the Farmer's Wife program-the samefor the other recipes included. Try thespecial frosting. Make plenty, it refriger-ates very well.

The Golden Lemon Cookies use up somany extra egg yolks. They are good forparties (made small) for the lunch box(stay crisp and nice) or big for the menof the family. Use your favorite cutter.

SUPER HAM SOUFFLE CASSEROLE- Mrs. Harry Bussard, Clarinda, Ia.2 c. cooked macaroniAdd 1 ground onion2 c. (or more) ground cooked or uncook-

ed ham (picnic shoulder may be used)4 egg yolksseasonings

Sauce:2 c. hot milk'2 to c. mild cheese, grated1/2 c. butter or margarine1 T. flourCombine sauce, macaroni, ham, egg yolks

and seasoning. Fold in the stiffly beatenwhites of the 4 eggs. Pour into casserole.Bake 50 minutes in 350° oven. During thelast 15 minutes, if desired, pour over 1can of cream of condensed mushroom soupor add 2 T. chopped parsley. Serve witha hard roll, pineapple sherbet and coffee.

BUTTERMILK WHITE CAKE

- Mrs. Roy Swetnam, Omaha, Nebr.2 c. sifted white sugar1/2 c. shortening2 egg whites2% c sifted cake flour1/2 t. baking powder1/2 t. salt1 c. buttermilk1/2 t. vanilla1/2 t. lemon flavoring% c. buttermilk with1 t. soda

Cream sugar and shortening until verylight and creamy. Add the two unbeatenegg whites next. Add the 1 c. of butter-milk and stir very well. Add 2 c. of theflour sifted with the baking powder andsalt. Add the % c. of buttermilk with 1t. soda mixed in well. Add the remain-ing 3% c. flour and beat well. Add flavor-ings. Bake in 350° oven for 25 to 30 min-utes. Use layer pans three 8 inch round,two 9 inch or one large oblong baking pan,9x13x2 inch. Be sure to do a lot of beat-ing as this insures a fine textured cake.

FROSTING1/2 c. shortening1/2 c. light creamAdd 1 box of powdered sugar and beat

well. Add 1 t. vanilla and 1/4 t. almondflavoring. If there is icing left over putin the refrigerator covered. Set out about1 hour before you want to use it. Beatjust a little and it is ready for use. Colorif desired.

GOLDEN LEMON COOKIES1 c. shortening (part butter)11/2 c. sugar6 egg yolks21/2 c. flour1 t. soda1 t. cream of tartar1/4 t. salt1 t. lemon flavoringCream shortening and sugar. Add beat-

en egg yolks and flavoring. Add dry in-gredients. Mix well and make into smallballs. Dip in sugar and flatten slightly oncooky sheet (ungreased). Bake in 350°oven for 8 to 10 minutes. This is a goodway to use those extra egg yolks. Thecookies crack open on top and make a verypretty cooky.

SHERBET- Mrs. J. E. Richey, Dayton, IowaTry this one with the Ham Souffle.3 mashed bananas3 oranges, juice and pulp3 lemons, juice and pulp1 No. 2 can of crushed pineapple, juice

and all21/2 to 3 c. sugar3 c. cold watera few cut up maraschino cherries (use

no juice)Mix all and put in ice cube tray to freeze.Stir several times as it freezes.

You are in a very strategic industry,namely producing food for the tables ofAmerica, but I doubt if farmers will everresort to the practice of withholding theirproduce from the market, or institutingstrikes as labor does. We may see isolatedgroups doing some of that, but not on alarge scale. Farmers, in general, do notsubscribe to violence, nor would they sub-scribe to any program that would causeinnocent people to suffer. Farmers in thismodern day are the world's greatesthumanitarians. They work long hours atlow pay, mainly to guarantee that peoplewill not go hungry. No other group wouldsacrifice, as farmers have, to fulfill theirobligation to society.

I'm sure many of you get discouraged,but occasionally something happens thatmakes you feel you are appreciated. MayI, as a town consumer, commend you forproviding an abundance of food and fiberso that I can be sure of food on my tableand clothes to keep me warm. In commend-ing you, I regret that you are not gettingproperly rewarded for your efforts. Youhave many friends, however, and many ofus will keep on fighting your battles andhoping that your lot in life will improve astime goes by. I suggest at the same timethat you adopt a philosophy of trying todo more things, as individuals, to bringmore abundance to the farmers of our area.We might see great improvements in farmincome if you will take this challenge andwork effectively to limit production andthereby insure higher prices for what youhave to market.

RALPH CHILDS COVERSSTARKWEATHER STORY

As soon as word was flash-ed that Charles Starkweath-er and his companion CarilFugate had been captured.The KMA plane was readiedby our pilot Gene Racine whoflew Ralph Childs to Doug-las, Wyoming scene of thecapture. The plane stopped inOmaha to pick up KMTVcamera crews and reportersand in a very short time theywere in Douglas. R al phphoned in his superb reportwhich was tape recorded. Hewent two days with practi-cally no sleep and coveredthe story right up to the ex-tradition by Nebr ask aauthorities. Everyone whoheard his coverage agrees itwas that of a master news-man.

The grocerwas about out of corn one particular dayso he gave an order for three cases toEddie. Eddie brought the order to me andseemed quite proud of himself. It remind-ed me of the early days of KMA when wesold everything from harness to prunes.We don't handle fish, carloads of driedprunes, celery, harness, tires etc. any morebut we do have mighty good popcorn, inaddition to the regular lines of nurserystock, garden and flower seeds, hybrid corn,farm seeds and miscellaneous merchandise.

Other fruits may be substi-tuted for the plums.

CRACK B-47 STRATOJET BOMBER COMBAT CREW HOLDS DISCUSSION OF DE-FENSE PREPARATION. Those vapor trails you see in the sky are by no means "fairweather pilots" out to get in a little flying time. They are Strategic Air Command jetbombers with a crew of three men able to deliver a counterpunch equal to all the bombsdropped during WW II.
